mauritania Mauritania v.2026-05-15

Banditry, kidnapping and prohibited military zones in northern and eastern Mauritania, with terrorism threats countrywide and risky Algeria-Mali-Western Sahara borders.

  • mis à jour 2026-05-15

As of 2026-05-15, official advisories for Mauritania include avoid-all-travel warnings for northern and eastern areas, border zones with Mali, Algeria, and Western Sahara, and some overland routes. Broader advice also warns against non-essential travel because of terrorism, kidnapping, prohibited military zones, and an unpredictable security situation.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid all travel to the Mauritanian regions and routes under the highest official restrictions: northern and eastern Mauritania, the Mali border area, parts of the Algeria and Western Sahara border areas, and land routes through or near those zones.

Avoid non-essential travel to Mauritania unless the trip is necessary. Before booking fixed buses, private drivers, desert excursions, border crossings, or the Nouakchott-Nouadhibou corridor, check the latest official page for your government and compare it with the exact route.

Monitor local instructions while in the country. Current official notes also flag periodic protests linked to developments in the Middle East; avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, and follow local authority instructions if movement restrictions change.

Where exactly this applies
  • Northern and eastern Mauritania are under avoid-all-travel advice in multiple official notices.
  • Canada flags Tiris Zemmour, Hodh El Gharbi, Hodh Ech Chargui, and areas east of the Zouerate-Ouadane-Tidjikdja-Kiffa-Sélibali line in Adrar, Tagant, Assaba, and Guidimakha.
  • The UK advises against all travel east of a line between, but excluding, Kankossa, Akhreijit, Ghallaouia, Zouerat, Fderîck, and onwards west to the Western Sahara border; it also flags areas within 25 km of the Mali border in the south, including Khabou.
  • Germany warns against travel to Mauritania's immediate border areas with Algeria and Mali, and against entering or leaving through those border areas.
  • Switzerland advises against travel to the border area with Western Sahara, the area north of Ouadane, and the area east of the Ouadane-Lexeiba line.
  • New Zealand says not to travel to eastern and northern Mauritania, or to border areas with Algeria, Mali, and Western Sahara.
  • Italy marks several areas for particular caution, including the north of Zouérat, Tiris-Zemmour, Hodh-Gharbi, and Hodh-Charghi.

Why The Advice Is Tight

The highest restrictions are tied to border and desert geography. Canada cites banditry, kidnapping, and prohibited military zones in northern and eastern Mauritania (travel.gc.ca). New Zealand cites military activity, extremist groups, and border-area risk (safetravel.govt.nz).

Countrywide advice is also stricter than ordinary caution. Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel to Mauritania because of terrorism, particularly against Western interests (travel.gc.ca). Ireland also advises avoiding non-essential travel to Mauritania (ireland.ie).

Overland routing is where a vague country label breaks down. Germany warns against entering or leaving Mauritania through the immediate Algeria and Mali border areas, and strongly advises against land travel through Western Sahara (auswaertiges-amt.de). The UK uses a line-based eastern exclusion zone plus a separate 25 km Mali-border warning, so route checking has to happen at town-and-road level (gov.uk).

France has an active update titled "Restrictions de circulation" and a separate active note on the regional security context dated 2023-01-09 (diplomatie.gouv.fr). Check movement restrictions before long road legs or plans that depend on local permissions.

If You Are Still Planning A Trip

If the trip is discretionary, postpone it or pick a route that avoids Mauritania. If travel is essential, keep transport and accommodation changeable, and recheck official advice before departure and while in-country.

Current advisories support checking routes, checkpoints, local instructions, and border conditions. They do not support a blanket claim that one transport mode is safer than another.
