Violent crime, arbitrary detention and basic shortages countrywide, plus limited airline operations and border/airspace-closure risk after the 3 January state of external commotion.

Venezuela is under multiple official avoid-all-travel advisories as of 2026-05-15. Current notices cite violent crime, arbitrary detention risk, political and economic instability, civil unrest, shortages, checkpoints, limited airline operations, and possible border or airspace disruption.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid all travel to Venezuela unless the trip is essential and you have current official guidance for security, transport, documents, medical needs, and exit options. Postpone or reroute ordinary tourism, backpacking, remote-work stays, and overland detours through the country.

If travel is unavoidable, check the newest official advice before booking and again before moving inside Venezuela. Current advisories flag border areas, the Orinoco Mining Arc, Caracas and Maiquetía airport, demonstrations, checkpoints, limited airline operations, possible border or airspace closures, and shortages of medication, gasoline, water, or food.

Where exactly this applies

Official notices cover either all of Venezuela or named high-risk areas inside it. Named areas include:

  • Border areas with Colombia, Brazil, and Guyana.
  • The Orinoco Mining Arc / Arco Minero region south of the Orinoco River.
  • Venezuelan states bordering Colombia, except Maracaibo in one German notice.
  • States bordering Brazil and Guyana in the same German notice.
  • Arc minier in the north-east of Bolívar state and Delta Amacuro.
  • Northern Sucre state.
  • Península de Paraguaná.
  • Caracas and Maiquetía airport in the French security-zone notice.

Use the country-wide avoid-all-travel advice as the baseline. A narrower regional exception is not a green light for normal travel.

What The Advisories Say

Nine governments in this source set advise avoiding all travel or use an equivalent highest-level restriction for Venezuela. Canada, Australia, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Switzerland all put at least part of their current Venezuela advice in that hardest traveler-facing category.

Canada’s advisory, updated 2026-05-04, says to avoid all travel because of the heightened security situation, unstable political and economic conditions, violent crime, arbitrary detention risk, and declining basic living conditions, including shortages of medication, gasoline, and water.

Ireland’s 2026-01-05 notice advises against all travel because of the security situation and limited airline operations. New Zealand’s 2024-11-29 advice also says not to travel, citing unstable political and economic conditions, arbitrary detention risk, violent crime, possible violent civil unrest, and shortages of food.

Spain is the softer country-wide outlier. Its 2026-04-11 notice recommends not traveling to Venezuela unless necessary, and says necessary travel should use extreme caution, especially in border areas.

Border, Mining, And Transport Risks

The United Kingdom’s 2026-03-10 advice says to avoid all travel within 80 km / 50 miles of the Colombia border, within 40 km / 25 miles of the Brazil border, within 40 km / 25 miles of the Guyana border, and to the Orinoco Mining Arc south of the Orinoco River.

Germany’s 2026-05-14 notice warns against travel to Venezuelan states bordering Colombia, except Maracaibo, and states bordering Brazil and Guyana. It advises against travel to the rest of Venezuela. The summary cites armed colectivos, checkpoints, possible unrest, and a January 3, 2026 security escalation.

France’s security-zone notice, updated 2026-04-16, names border zones, the mining arc in north-east Bolívar and Delta Amacuro, northern Sucre, Península de Paraguaná, Caracas, and Maiquetía airport. France also has active “Dernières minutes” updates dated 2026-04-07 for movement precautions and travel alerts inside Venezuela.

The United Kingdom notes that a “state of external commotion” announced on 3 January could lead to closure of Venezuelan borders and airspace. Italy’s current Viaggiare Sicuri update flags temporary scheduled-flight disruption. Treat transport plans as unstable until the carrier, airport, border point, and official advice still match on the day you move.

If You Are Already In Venezuela

Check your own government’s current advice, keep proof of identity and legal status accessible, avoid demonstrations and checkpoints where possible, and assume transport schedules can change quickly. The source notices specifically mention civil unrest, arbitrary detention risk, checkpoints, shortages, and possible airspace or border disruption.

For overland movement, the named border distances and mining-region warnings matter more than a generic route preference. These official inputs support checking routes and avoiding named areas; they do not support a blanket claim that flying, buses, or any single itinerary is safer in every case.

Source Notes

The strongest current pattern is avoid-all-travel advice from multiple governments, with one avoid-non-essential-travel country-wide notice from Spain and narrower or supplemental heightened-caution notices from France, the United Kingdom, and Italy.
