Front staff are the most ignorant people I have came across. I asked for a different room because I was getting bitten everyday from bed bugs but told me that would happen in every room. After spending 2 weeks there and needed another night was told it would have to be paid immediately but unfortunately was at work so they THROW all your stuff around and put it in a store unit

Everything else. I had booked a bed in a female dorm. When I arrived, I was asked whether or not I'm allergic to cats as my dorm was on the "cat floor". Unfortunately, I am.... Could have asked me in advance. So I was put in a mix dorm and I was told they'd only put women in my dorm. However I ended up exclusively rooming with men... As the atmosphere is a bit weird in this hostel (in a bad way), I just felt unsafe. But that's not all. There was water damage in my room on the 1st day (basically rain went through the roof and ceiling and into the room). This happened during the day and the hostel didn't even notify me, just leaving all of our stuff in the room. We were then put into some kind of storage room. Then had to move again into a different room. As I had to constantly check out/in, I basically didn't have access to the hostel most of the time. In general, the hostel is dirty and the building is in the process of collapsing because of water damage (that's why the doors don't fit in the frames anymore and they're super difficult to open and close, also the flooding in my room was kind of a dead givaway, the ceiling was literally bending down and the rooms are so humid that my towel never dried). I understand that the building is a "100 year old heritage building" but I'm pretty sure that doesn't prevent you from cleaning it or doing small maintenance and upgrade work. The showers don't have space to like get changed and hang your stuff, it's just shower stalls, I've never seen that. There are holes between the toilet stalls that people have filled up with toilet paper. The toilet was clogged most of the time. No power outlets near the beds. No nothing around the beds actually (light, shelf etc). List could go on and on. Well, the cambie hostel gastown is so far winning at being the worst hostel I've ever stayed in!

Definitely saw bed bugs in my sheets and have unexplained skin issues after staying a few nights. When I told the staff they said the couldn't find any but at least they refunded my last night. Signs saying no food in rooms probably due to mice, but there were mice in mine anyway. You can hear them under the floorboards as well. Music and bass from the bar until very very late, like 3am late, weird drunk people in the hallways in the middle of the night. Male staff member entered my room twice without knocking, and when I left so he could clean the other beds I came back and he left his cleaning bottle all over my bed. Its generally very dirty and unhygienic even though the staff always seems to be cleaning. Definitely seen better days and I don't recommend staying here unless you're desperate and want to hate your life. Only positives - oreo is cute and the staff were nice and tried to be helpful, all the negatives are things beyond their control.

My girlfriend and I both got bedbugs the first night here which ruined our first week backpacking. The building is quite dusty and uncared for throughout and the price absolutely does not reflect the accommodation. The staff do their best with security but unfortunately there is an extreme amount of homelessness directly outside the hostel door which they never mention. The second you walk out the hostel people were asking us for money. There are no warnings about this in the advert.

Dead mouse in the room.... Dude at the desk reports "rooms are cleaned daily"....He was pleasant enough though and promptly removed the mouse. Bathrooms were disgusting, hadn't been cleaned in ages. Would definitely not recommend unless your only requirement is no bed bugs.

Analyse de l'ambiance
Cambie Hostel - Gastown sits in a very central spot near Waterfront Station and downtown transit, so getting around on foot or by train is easy. The building is old and worn, with wooden floors, tight rooms in some spots, and a rough-around-the-edges feel rather than a polished one. Two cats live on the first floor, which gives the building extra personality. The biggest tradeoff is noise. The bar below can push loud music, bass, karaoke, and late-night energy into the early hours, especially on the lower floors. Bathrooms and showers are often cramped and dated, and the kitchen can feel small for the number of beds. Some rooms and halls can also feel stale, damp, or a bit messy, so this works better for short, social, city-focused stays than for anyone chasing quiet rest.
