The House of Sandeman - Hostel & Suites

Unfortunately I found a bed bug in the bed that was allocated to me in the dorm. It wasn’t on the other bed, just the one I was transferred to. I was bitten immediately and had an allergic reaction which later led to a visit to a hospital in Lisbon 3 days later as my arm was 3 x its normal size. The staff were lovely and moved me to a private suite straight away (it was fantastic and bedbug free). They also gave me some disinfectant straight away. They said they’d sort it out immediately. I didn’t want to mention it because I know beg bugs aren’t necessarily the hotels fault. Travellers can carry them so it’s unfair to blame hotels. This hotel was clearly clean and proud of its reputation for being so. However, I’ve subsequently noticed a few reviews talking about bed bugs and the responses to them seem, in my opinion, to demonstrate the hotel is slightly in denial about their existence. It is solely for this reason that I mention it here. I think if a client complains about bedbugs, irrespective of whether you think it’s true or not, you should fumegate all the rooms. My allergic reaction wasn’t significant though it required medical attention and 3h in a busy hospital, but someone else’s can be. Please don’t see this as criticism of the hotel, but rather as a source of improvement. I live in hope that the fumigation did occur and that the bed bugs will cease to exist as the hotel is beautiful and the facilities are clean.

On the top of the dark room! The bed BUGs! I was scrolling on my phone in the dark and I saw 3 bugs on me and on my bed!!! can you believe that! I jumped out and took my bag and everything outside and I was wearing my pyjama! I try to find another hotel at 1am! Thanks god a friend of mine in Lisbon, knows a friend in Porto who offer me a stay overnight! and I booked another hotel in the morning and I let!! The reception said that's first time we have this!! While I can see many comments talking about BUGs many years ago! But unfortunately too late! However, he was nice and worried about me how am I spend the night and offer a separate room but I refused caz I do not want to carry any bugs with me to my home! And he requested a full refund without even asking! It's really too bad that you ignore such a thing in this nice place!

There were bed bugs in the 14 bed dorm. The sleep was impossible as I spent the whole night itching and I left the hostel full of bug bites.

I loved the hostel but my girlfriend came to hang out with me there and got bitten by something on her hand, legs, and arms. The bites got so bad that the next evening we went to the hospital. Bedbugs/spider are suspected by the doctor. Just saying, please stay aware is any more people get weird bites and then take action! Thank you!

We loved almost everything about our stay here- except the bed bugs. :( By the end of our 3 day stay, we were covered in bites and unfortunately brought bed bugs back to our homes as a result. Apart from that, the staff was friendly and the facilities were nice. It’s a great convenient location.

Bed bugs in verschillende bedden,😵‍💫

We loved almost everything about this property….except the bed bugs. Unfortunately on our last day we found bed bugs in the restroom and in our beds. By the last day we were covered in bug bites. We also unfortunately brought bed bugs back to our homes as a result. We told the front desk and they seemed nonchalant/unconcerned. I wish they would have taken the concern more seriously. I see other reviews that mention bed bugs as well- I wish we would have seen those before staying here.

My bed had bed bugs! I caught two and told the staff on checkout. They told me it had happened before and they would take care of it. Over the next few days I developed an allergic reaction to the several (dozens!) bites in my body! This infestation must have been there for quite a while. I've stayed at hundreds of hotels and this was the first time this happened. I can't have been the only one complaining.

BED BUGS. When I arrived some people in my dorm trying to sleep so I didn’t do the usually bed bug check… big mistake. As I was packing up I noticed a very large dead bed bug on the curtain. When checking the bed, he pillow inside the pillow case was COVERED with reddish brown spots. It would have been impossible for house keeping to not notice. When I told the staff they were very nonchalant. Let me shower before checkout but when I got out of the shower same sheets were still on the bed.

The place is amazing. Prime location and amazing views from the inside. But returning back home I’ve notice bed bug bites and so they should look in to that. Sorry but just in case anyone else has bites.

Excellent location and view. Staff makes beds and cleans bathrooms daily. However, another patron in my room had a case of bed bugs. According to the staff, it was a really bad case. Staff came into room and put all bedding in garbage bags but didn’t tell us what was going on (we had to ask the front desk). Also lighting in rooms was too dark. Older demographic. Also one night it was a raining and the ceiling leaked onto me and my bed.

They have bed bugs I was eaten alive!!! Do not stay here!

Hostel is in a good location, not too far from restaurants and the grocery store. The reception is welcoming and had a beautiful view. The dorms were spacious and the beds very comfortable. Unfortunately though my partner did find bed bugs in his bed, and had to switch . The bathrooms were good, but as the shower is not enclosed fully, the floor of the bathroom would become flooded and there wasn’t any bath mats to dry it. Also there was also no hand towels in the bathrooms to dry your hands.
