Big Surf House

AVOID!!! Staff were hostile from the moment we arrived and made us feel unwelcome throughout. Facilities are a joke, only three toilets and showers for far too many guests, most broken, blocked, or without locks. Our aircon poured liquid onto the bed, soaking the mattress, bags, and clothes. They didn’t fix anything, just gave new sheets. The manager was rude, dismissive, and even tried to keep my ID whilst reminding us we booked 2 weeks in advance as if they did us a favour, weird. Shocking!

Power shuts ALL the time

This was one of the worst hostels I’ve stayed at. The lady who runs the hostel was very rude to me during my stay and I ended up leaving early. The location is good by the beach but there are better options in Popoyo.

Absolutely terrible. The whole place was dirty. It smelt of sewage constantly. The drains were constantly clogged and the atmosphere was dead. Don’t go here.

This might be the worst place I've stayed in my life. The staff is hard to find and seem inconvenienced when you ask them for basic things like to check in. Most of the lockers don't work and there's no security so anyone can walk in from the beach. There was no toilet paper or soap and the shower was flooded for several days. The kitchen is disgusting and I had food stolen. The mattress is all springs. There are a bunch of locals always hanging out in the common areas, the general vibe is weird

Multiple toilets did not have locks. The electricity and wifi did not always work. The top bunk bed did not have a power socket. There was hardly any filtered water. The locks in the dorms were missing some parts and were very hard to open and close.

We didn’t have the best time here despite being in an amazing location. The manager Gabi was rude to my friend multiple times, having arguments about breakfast orders despite her being in the wrong. She then apologised to me instead of my friend, which wasn’t great either. Make sure when you check in that your passport is locked in the safe - ours were hid in a random bookshelf and Gabi tried to tell me she didn’t have them - had to BEG her to look for them as we were leaving early the nex...

If you tend to travel with cleanliness in mind this place isn’t for you. Everything is pretty gross- the atmosphere is nice if you are wanting to make friends. You do have tov walk and cross a river to get to the main surf break- but if you bring your own board you can surf out front. They don’t rent boards apart from someone about a 30 minute beach walk away. Wouldn’t stay here again.

Pros:Volunteers are nice. right on the beach. Cons:Stairs are messed up like feels like I'm about to break my neck everytime I walk down. No air-conditioning when advertised only for two rooms. Wifi is so bad, can't watch anything on a computer so don't even try.No free water and someone stole my jug out of the kitchen when it was labeled the day i got it.Apparently this happens often.

Die Lage ist top direkt am Strand. Das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis ist eher schlecht. Die Küche ist katastrophal ausgestattet und es gibt zu wenig Bäder für die vielen Gäste. Die Dorms an sich sind ganz okay, jedoch etwas zu dunkel. Insgesamt bekommt man für den Preis deutlich bessere Hostels.

Overpriced food at restaurant, nice free breakfast though. Great location, lovely staff. Not the most social but easy to meet people here. Very chill

I had a really great time in big surf house. It’s a beautiful hostel with great chill possibilities. It was easy to get to know people and there is a very cool vibe. I think this is the best hostel in Popoyo. Everything was very clean and the employees were very friendly

I have nothing bad to say. We loved our stay here. Right by the beach. Nice dorms with nice ac. The bar/restaurante is also soo good. Staff really friendly.

Lovely spot, great communal space. Shame there were no mosquito nets on the beds!

Room was clean and the place is really beautiful. Although, there was no ambiance and the staff cancelled social activities beacause they said they were tired. The bar closed around 6 pm. A guard opened our locked door (private room) at the middle of the night which terrified us. Still, the owner ended up reimbursing our night.

So overall I absolutely loved the volunteers there, truly they are so special and the workers behind the bar and restaurant were so so nice but there was a lot of issues when I was there. Power would go out everyday for a couple of hours, they were changing the sewers so our room constantly smelled like poop and lastly we felt unsafe because one night a security walked into the ALL GIRLS room at like 11pm-12am while we were about to change. I felt very unsafe with this new security guard.

For me the big surf house felt like a home. In the female dorm i really enjoyed the private beds and slept great. The whole place is really clean. The outdoor showers are great after surf, the gym is well equipped and from the restaurant you have such an amazing view. There are lots of different spots to chill & the team is really nice. I would definitely come again ☀️

We hadden de prive kamer met eigen badkamer die erg ruim was. De badkamer rook niet fris, erge rioollucht wanneer je gebruik maakt van het water. Douche had een hele kleine straal. Niet ideaal om zand van je af te krijgen. Personeel was een beetje bot af en toe. In het hostel hangt wel een gezellige sfeer en worden veel leuke activiteiten georganiseerd.

Loved my stay here. Beachfront with a chilled vibe. Cozy dorms with comfortable bunk beds. Staff and volunteers were super friendly and helpful. Will definitely be back.

Really friendly and helpful staff. The location is great right on the beach. Maybe the only fault was the bathroom door in my room didn't lock properly but other than that it's a great hostel.

Perfect stay, we even extended by one night. Lovely staff and perfect location right on the beach. Thank you for a great experience!

I really enjoyed my stay here staff were so kind and the atmosphere was nice and social without trying too hard, could’ve been a little bit cleaner but I think it’s just old overall really recommend

Such a wonderful place to stay in Popoyo! The staff are so friendly, the beds are comfortable, and the included breakfast is an added bonus (can choose between fruit bowl, oatmeal and típico nica breakfast). Clean and safe. There is a coffee maker and bins/small refrigerator to store your groceries. Would definitely stay again!

Great hostel, they have a little kitchenette which was useful. Lots of areas to chill.
