   13 days in this hostel—13 days too many. It’s impossible to use the kitchen, which is very small, busy and half of whose appliances don’t work; the fridges are overloaded, and the staff is rude. The worst part is probably that they come into the room about ten times a day for a rushed cleaning, but they don’t hesitate to move all your belongings around and rummage through your bags to throw away food (even in unopened packages). I had no choice but to keep two cans of food and a box of crackers in my bag upstairs because the fridge is too small for all the residents; they rummaged through it and threw everything away. I found my swimsuit crumpled up on my bed because they moved it after touching it to check if it was damp. It’s common for this hostel to be intrusive in residents’ private lives—I’m really glad to be leaving. And finally, they sell us “cheaper” activities thanks to the hostel’s prices, which are actually more expensive than on the websites for Green Island, Fitzroy Island, or even Get Your Guide :) Google asks me to rate the rooms : 1/5, really small for 6 people. The service : well... 1/5. Location : 1/5 far from everything.

We were told that we would only get the money back if we left a good review, which we found very unprofessional and inappropriate—especially considering that the deposit was $60.

   The hostel was not located very centrally, but there was a shuttle service that ran regularly into the city, which made getting around easier. The kitchen, however, was unfortunately quite small for the number of guests and somewhat inconvenient to use, since you had to borrow dishes, cups, and other utensils. The bathrooms were unfortunately not very clean during our stay. We were also a bit disappointed with the staff. They often seemed overwhelmed, and we sometimes had to wait a long time to be helped. Some of the employees also appeared to be very young and inexperienced. Overall, we were satisfied with the cleanliness of the rooms, which were kept in good condition. What we found especially disappointing was the situation with our deposit.    At 3 a.m., the door opens. 4-bed room. All four are asleep. I get shaken awake by him and he jumps on top of me. A heavily intoxicated and drugged-up guest — or maybe someone from outside. I can’t say. He’s shouting and tries to walk through the closed balcony door!? The shock of my life. The woman in the dorm immediately runs down to reception and gets an incompetent staff member. When they come back upstairs, the culprit has disappeared. The staff member wakes up the other people in the dorm and asks why they woke us up. I think he simply didn’t believe me or the woman. I told him several times to check the cameras! But unfortunately the camera wasn’t working :) I was in room C32. The Night 11.02-12.02. Not a fake story — a true incident. Not funny at all as a guest!

   Thieves, dirty rooms, and scammers — avoid this place. There are much better hostels around Cairns. The photos no longer reflect the reality inside. First of all, the rooms are dirty. They did not return my deposit even though I returned everything: the key card, the wristband, and all the kitchen items — without any explanation. The receptionist was dishonest and unprofessional. As for the French woman who claims to be the manager, she is clearly not managing anything properly. This hostel is dirty, gloomy, and located in the middle of nowhere. Nothing impressive at all — time to come back down to earth. Finally, the bartender behaves in a very inappropriate way. He has a girlfriend but openly flirts with every girl during his shifts. He shows a clear lack of respect toward male customers, while completely changing his attitude with women. Avoid this place at all costs. I am far from being the only one who has had serious issues with this hostel.

   I had a really nice experience in this hostel. I spent the Christmas and it was super fun. There was a Christmas dinner and also a stolen Santa activity. They are located a bit far from the city center but there is a shuttle bus for free. I will probably stay there again when I come back to the city.

   The staff were rude and would walk into the room without announcing themselves. Several times they walked in while we were chanting and did not say anything or apologise. We had cockroaches in our room and complained about that and they did not seem to care. Only good thing was the free shuttle bus and bar being on site.

   This is a hostel with a lot of potential but the execution is not quite there. The rooms are nice with big lockers and air con and are frequently cleaned. There it’s lots of outdoor space around the pool and bar which is very reasonably priced. The free shuttle bus is great but can get busy at night. However some of the other facilities are not enough for the number of guests. The kitchen is far too small and always busy and there isn’t enough food storage space for everyone. The WiFi is very slow. You aren’t allowed to hang wet clothes or towels in the rooms but the outdoor drying area is tiny, big enough for a few people’s stuff but not a huge hostel. This is a place where people are doing barrier reef, waterfall and rainforest tours most days, which results in a lot of wet towels and clothes and nowhere to hang them. If you leave toiletries in the ensuite bathroom they will be taken by the housekeeping staff and have to be reclaimed from reception. On multiple occasions one particular member of staff has burst into our room without knocking or announcing herself and turned the light on while people are still in bed. I understand that they have to come in and clean the rooms but some warning would be nice, every other hostel I’ve stayed in they knock and announce themselves before opening the door. What if someone was getting changed inside? There also seems to be a real issue with thefts, there are frequent messages in the WhatsApp group from people whose stuff has been stolen. This also makes me nervous to leave my clothes in the outdoor drying area in case they are taken. They run daily events but a lot of them start at 9pm and quiet hours starts at 10pm so it doesn’t really seem worth it. We attended the Trivia night which was advertised as team trivia but actually was just 30 minutes of individually doing random Kahoot quizzes. There are just too many rules, most of which you aren’t told before hand and only are told after you’ve broken them. I would probably stay here again for a couple of nights because the price is cheap but definitely not long term.

   Opzich een prima hostel. Er zijn en-suite badkamers, en ook een paar losse. Hee gordijntjes bij de bedden, dat is wat jammer. Er rijdt een shuttle bus naar het centrum, dat is goed te doen maar hij zit wel best vaak vol. Wel werd er best vaak geappt dat er dingen werden gestolen, zelf geen last vab gehad maar niet echt een fijn gevoel!

   Version Française : Auberge agréable, avec beaucoup d'activités proposées. Cependant, la cuisine est trop petite, tout comme les frigo, par rapport au nombre de personnes dans l'auberge. Il y a également beaucoup de vols de nourriture. Autre gros point faible : le personnel touche à nos affaires personnelles et les sort pour les étendre dehors sans nous prévenir. On se retrouve alors avec des vêtements perdus, car au bout de 24 heures, s'ils ne sont pas récupérés, ils partent dans le « free stuff ». Résultat : on voit parfois des gens porter nos vêtements le lendemain... et évidemment, il est impossible de prouver qu'ils étaient à nous la veille. Nous pouvons pas géré la Clim comme nous le voulons sous peine d’avoir 200$ d’amende et également nous pouvons pas ouvrir les fenêtres vu que la Clim tourne 24h/24h L’auberge est loin du centre ville (40 minutes à pied) cependant une navette est à disposition toutes les 30 minutes. Cependant un bar est à votre disposition avec de la nourriture qualitatif et des prix largement abordable. Version Anglaise : Pleasant hostel with plenty of activities offered. However, the kitchen is too small, as is the fridge, considering the number of people staying there. There’s also a lot of food theft. Another major downside is that the staff touch our personal belongings and hang them outside without telling us. As a result, some clothes go missing — after 24 hours, if you haven’t collected them, they end up in the “free stuff” area. You sometimes see other people wearing your clothes the next day… and of course, there’s no way to prove they were yours the day before. We can’t control the air conditioning as we want, under the risk of a $200 fine, and we also can’t open the windows since the AC runs 24/7. The hostel is far from the city center (about a 40-minute walk); however, a shuttle is available every 30 minutes. However, there is a bar available that offers good-quality food at very affordable prices.

    Cheater!! Avoid this Hostel. Your money from your credit card got deducted by them whenever they like. The worst experience I’ve ever had at a hostel. I booked this place on 13th Oct for 22–30 Oct. They charged me the first night even though the booking said “pay on arrival.” A day before check-in, they cancelled my booking claiming I didn’t have enough money in my card. I didn’t see the email in time, and they cancelled it without giving me a chance to fix it. When I called, they refused to refund and told me to rebook at a higher price. I rebooked through Agoda again because of my limited budget. When I arrived, the front desk named Ale asked both me and my friend for credit cards. I already provided mine, but my friend doesn’t have one. We booked a private double room, so I don’t understand why she needed both of us to show credit cards. She immediately rejected our stay and even called us “troublesome,” which was very rude and unprofessional. When I asked again about the refund, she just repeated the same robotic answer — “non-refundable.” We sat on the bench next to the entrance trying to find another place to stay, but Ale told us to leave, saying the bench was “for guests only.” There were no other guests around, and they weren’t busy at all. She didn’t show any document or policy — just asked us to leave like we were being chased out. We felt humiliated and disrespected. I also feel unsafe because they already have my credit card information and can charge me anytime. Terrible management and attitude — I will never recommend this place to anyone.

    The worst hostel I've been to in Australia. The management is unbelievably bad. You are not treated as if you were a guest there. You get the feeling that you have to justify yourself for everything and are just tolerated. The manager is extremely rude. Her only job is to keep an eye on who might be doing something wrong throughout the day and then you are thrown straight out of the hostel if she doesn't like something. The hostel is all rules. You feel like you're paying to sleep in a prison. - It's absurd. After 12 o'clock you are not allowed to stay anywhere else except in your room, which means if you want to talk to your friends, you are asked to leave the hostel and go out on the street. You are also not allowed to stay in the parking lot. - Things regularly disappear from the rooms and either don't turn up or are miraculously in the reception room. - The kitchen and space for eating are far too small for the amount of people there. - You are not allowed to have any food in the rooms. Not even orange juice in a bottle! Everything is taken away. - You are not allowed to put anything on the lockers. Every day the staff come and put your things on the floor! Because it supposedly looks tidier when it's on the floor!? - If you hang something on your bed to have some privacy, because they don't have curtains, they take it down every day. It feels like harassment and an invasion of privacy. -The manager is not afraid to take things away from you and break them for no reason at all. It feels like she has real problems. - The showers are boiling hot so you burn yourself. You have to turn on all the showers and wait 15 minutes for the water to get to a normal temperature. They have now also increased the price of the washing machine and dryer. It's not a nice place and you don't feel comfortable here because you have to be afraid that your things will get away and you'll be watched the whole time. Also via the cameras. Avoid this place at all costs.

    The kitchen is not big enough for the size of people staying there, your food isn’t safe regardless of labelling it, I had my food stolen from me even my bag and the label left in the fridge. You would not have time to cook before your flight if it’s an early one or a late one as it gets so busy that you can’t fit anywhere to cook. The hostel is segregated in groups a large one of French speakers taking over the common areas and the free shuttle any time you try to go in and no chance of english

    If you are traveling and you are not an European backpacker, I won’t recommend you stay here at all. Cause all the reception are European backpackers and they only show respect to their own people. They have their own group and it’s almost like a cult. If you are not one of them they just look at you in a really creepy way. And if you are checking in or checking out, their own people will just interrupt you and cut the line. The reception allows it cause they will just stop service you and start to speak another language with them. On night 30th Sep 2024, they had a lot spaces but put me in a really smelly room. And when I reported it, the reception said it was my fault and he couldn’t change the room for me unless I pay for another room. He said stay or pay, take it or leave it and showed absolutely no respect, and while we were talking, he saw another European backpackers, he just stopped serving me and spoke another language with them making me wait there. And it’s not ok that they treated me like that.

    The pool is amazing and the outside area is a really chill place to hang. They have a great happy hour! The kitchen is pretty nicely equipped although a bit small for everyone to cook in. Good showers, beds,... But the rooms are SO smelly. You are not allowed to open the window in your room and we were 6 people cramped together in a tiny room so you can imagine. Also stuff gets stolen, mainly from the main area where you hang your cooking gear/food. Happened to us and multiple other people.

    Please do not book at Summer House Cairns My experience at this establishment was extremely disappointing on several fronts. Worst point : the staff members !! Firstly, the cleaning team was caught red-handed stealing, not only food but also clothing and beauty products. Furthermore, the policy of banning guests for dubious reasons is unacceptable. The staff not only proved to be unfriendly but also downright unpleasant, showing no willingness to assist in case of complication or answer questions. The ridiculously small size of the kitchen renders any attempt to cook in the evenings impossible due to the overwhelming number of people present. Likewise, the shuttle service is practically unusable due to its constant overcrowding. In summary, I strongly advise against this establishment due to its abysmal service and complete lack of consideration for its clientele, it’s a shame because this hostel has potential if we remove all these bad points…

There are fees for everything you do. You can’t even open the window ( I let you imagine the smell in certains rooms ). I was in a Summer house in Melbourne and this was the greatest hostel ever, but this one is the worst I did in my entire life.

    I've had food, clothes, shoes, and supplies lost or stolen at this place on multiple occasions. Best hostel in Cairns, but that's not saying very much. The culture is subpar, because they process so many bodies. Processing a lot of bodies manifests as: Long wait times at the counter, providing a deposit for a towel, and no common cutlery or dishware. The staff is used to throwing your things away, if the common storage spaces are too crowded and you have to leave things on the floor. There is a lot of seating in the common area, but almost no where to just relax. Wouldn't recommend. This is a stressful place to live if you want to stay long term.

As travellers set us back a bit as they charged us $30 extra a night. Wouldn’t have booked if we knew. Understand the staff on the desk at the time didn’t know, but it wasn’t communicated and it surprised us and had no where else to stay.

    My recent stay at Summer house was incredibly disappointing due to a multitude of issues. Firstly, the management of the hostel, particularly Ceci, left much to be desired. Ceci was consistently unavailable during her designated hours, often hiding away in her office instead of addressing pressing issues such as stolen bags and unclean bathrooms. It felt like guests' concerns were being disregarded, with management more focused on finding excuses to impose random fines to the guests. Security was lax, evidenced by continued thefts despite the presence of surveillance cameras. Additionally, the decision to allow the owner's dog in the pool area was unhygienic and unacceptable. The lack of functioning doors and the need of always fixing the keys card was also extremely annoying. Furthermore, the shortage of cutlery and poorly equipped kitchen made meal preparation a challenge, detracting from the overall experience. Despite a facade of friendliness, the other manager, Matt, displayed a lack of empathy and act like a dictator when confronted with issues. It felt as though guests were merely seen as tools to be used, with little consideration for their comfort or satisfaction. Promises were made, but there was little follow-through, leaving guests feeling disillusioned and dissatisfied. Additionally, it was disheartening to observe a bias against French guests, who seemed to be unfairly targeted. Overall, my experience was deeply disappointing. I would strongly advise potential guests to approach with caution and consider alternative accommodations. Unless you fancy living in a jail and constantly paying fines, or worse, being unceremoniously kicked out at 8 pm without any valid explanation other than 'antisocial behavior,' despite dedicating a full month to contributing positively to the hostel's entertainment and events while diligently following all their peculiar rules.

    Not ideal really. Just stay at Gilligans. My friend had her shoes stolen when the cleaner came in to change the beds and another man had their shoes stolen. Also had a pair of shorts stolen. Nothing was in lost property. Shuttles are good but don't take enough people at a time. Not enough places to sit for dinner. Rooms are nice. Loads of cockroaches in the shower!!!

    It is very noisy as people are usually "partying". In common spaces such as bathrooms and kitchen, cleaning was lacking. The staff was friendly but they told me that housekeeping must have thrown it away, and I know that wasn't the case because all the food was sealed and I left it in the refrigerator for only an hour. The only positive thing is that the rooms have air cond.

    In theory Summer House would have been a great hostel, however we felt that it didn’t quite work out. Staff were nice but in our experience most of them didn’t seem to know what they were doing. At one point during our stay one of them opened the door to our PRIVATE room to ask if we smoke, which we don’t (without giving any sort of explanation). They also let a girl into our room when she was checking in because the receptionist “had bad handwriting so his 24 looked like 29”.
