Bamboo Rio Hostel

Super friendly staff and assisted with recommendations and tours affiliated with them, felt very safe and secure. Super close to the beach. Yummy breakfast although pretty basic. The dorm we were in was a bit smelly and the bed was quite uncomfortable, woke up with over 50 -80 bites either bed bugs or mosquitoes which is not ideal. Bathroom was nice and new and cleaned every morning.

Die Unterkunft war schön und das Stuff war super nett und offen. Als ein Problem mit Bettwanzen auftrat (was in jedem Hostel mal passieren kann!) wurde super schnell reagiert und wir haben gratis upgrades und Entschädigungen bekommen. Danke nochmal an Hugo an der Stelle! Ich hatte eine gute Zeit dort. Das Frühstück ist auch gut :).

Basic hostel. However upon check in I was not introduced to any of the hostel, no WiFi code or bedsheets were given to me. On the last night we found bed bugs too. I cooked food one day then it all got stolen from the fridge the next. The pool was closed for three days of my stay. It says pool will be closed on rainy days, but it wasn’t even raining. This being said, Gabi and Deborah (pink hair) were lovely and super cheerful.

The place is a mess, filthy and ALL the beds in my room where filled with bed bugs. People complained and left immediately, but they did nothing, continued pilling new guests to get their vacations scrued with bites and bacteria. It's well located and the staff is nice. But I do not recommend by any means risking your safety and health. Avoid.

We saw at least 15 bed bugs. Took us days to clear them from our suitcases.

bed bugs were literally infesting my bed, like everywhere. i got bit a ton. the manager refused to give me a full refund. and the front door was never closed.

I found bed bugs in mine and my girlfriend’s bed. Staff said they would give me a full refund. I had to twist their arm and week later only got a partial refund. Also 90% of the time my 12 person dorm has the door open and the main door to the whole facility is almost always open, so definitely a security issue. Lock your stuff up and check your beds!

This hostel has a bedbug infestation — avoid staying here if you can. Staff are not taking the issue seriously. After I reported it, they simply removed the bedding and swept the floor, seemingly preparing the room for the next guest. While I was refunded, this is the bare minimum and does not make up for the experience. I had to check out early because the situation was unbearable. No meaningful attempt was made to properly resolve the problem.

Bed bugs beware! I stayed in the 12 bed dorm (Sasquarema) and got bitten by bed bugs. Staff paid for my stuff to get washed & dried, and refunded my additional nights but I would recommend avoiding this hostel, it seems like the situation was known of (reception didn’t seem surprised) and has been going on a while based on other reviews.

Edit: I was in this hostel from 2 dec 2025 until 7 dec 2025. Writing this, it’s the 12th of december, 2025. So weeks ago is such a bullshit🙃 I don’t even have my money back yet so lets see how helpful you really are I had a good time but unfortunately in at least the Rio room, there are so many bed bugs it’s crazy. I have lots of bumps only coming days later and I’m super afraid I took it home. Also the staff is really nice in the beginning, but I feel like they don’t really care anymore after you leave so that’s sad. They did give me a refund tho but yea def some improvement points

BED BUG WARNING! I had some crawling in my bed and the walls. I got MANY bites. When I told the front desk, they offered to change me to a different room and refund my laundry. But the following day, I saw they put a new person in my same bed that had bed bugs. Someone else I met at the hostel that left days before I saw them, said he had the same bites, so the bed bugs were around for a good week at least. In general, the staff are nice but they don't seem to take bed bugs seriously.

Limpieza bastante justa y precio elevado para lo que ofrecen. Además, ofrecen desayunos gratis a cambio de dejar una buena puntuación en Booking, lo cual resulta poco transparente. Sinceramente, antes de ir habíamos leído muy malas reseñas por la presencia de chinches en las habitaciones, y aunque no tuvimos ese problema, no nos sorprendió el nivel general del alojamiento.

Avoid at all costs. Extremely disappointed with both the hostel and the attitude of staff. 4 of us stayed here for nearly a week and on the third night we noticed bed bugs bites. We made sure to check the beds to make sure it definitely was that, and we took photos of the bed bugs we found, alongside the bites so that the staff couldn’t deny it. When we found this out, we immediately went to reception to let them know about the situation. The only solution they offered was just to move us to a different room, however we declined this offer as it simply makes no sense to move around the hostel when all of our clothes will have been infested.The staff did not even offer to clean our room, which was absolutely crazy! Also, the 2 staff members which we spoke to were extremely rude and just couldn’t care less. They were laughing and giggling to each other which was extremely unprofessional, especially when dealing with such an important matter. We also were never even given an apology for the situation. Anyway, we brought this situation up again when we were checking out, to see what compensation we could be offered, but the manager just told us to message their whatsapp and it would get sorted out (bad idea, but we had no choice as we had a flight). I sent a message, and it took about a week for them to send a form to fill out. However, I noticed the amount to be refunded was only for 1 person for 2 nights. I politely explained that I was confused that the amount was so small considering all 4 of us were affected (which we proved with images) and they turned round and told us that apparently we only told them one person was affected, which was a complete lie. It took about another week for them to respond to that and then just said the manager was away but he was coming back that day, so we’d have a response later that evening. Took a whole week AGAIN for them to reply after me sending several messages asking for an update. They then responded saying the manager has forwarded the situation to the finance department and again to wait for a response. It has since been over a month since that last message from them (and 2 since our stay) and I have messaged several times asking for updates on the situation and I have just been completely ignored.

Achtung! Bettwanzen in mehreren Zimmern. Als ich mich wegen verdacht auf Bettwanzen an der Rezeption gemeldet habe wurde ich auf ein anderes Zimmer umgebucht. Ich hatte nicht das Gefühl das es die Angestellten besonders interessierte. Am nächsten Tag hatte ich überall Bisse und bin Abgereist. Immerhin hatte ich diesmal mit einer kompetenten Angestellten das vergnügen welche die Sache einigermassen ernst nahm und mir das Geld für 2 Nächte zurückerstattete. Ich komme sicher nicht mehr ins Bamboo.

We liked the hostel. It was clean, with enough bathrooms with showers, etc. Staff was very nice and helpful. The vibe in the hostel was great, there was always sth going on at night. The only bad thing was that we found bed bugs in our beds :( Additionally, our room was not a "normal" room, but a very tiny one without a lot of space (it was indicated to be the volunteer's room). Con mucha ilusión reservamos 7 noches en la habitación compartida para 2 personas, fui con mi hijo. Al segundo día tuvimos que retirarnos por la cantidad de picaduras en el cuerpo, que al principio pensé que eran de mosquitos pero resultaron ser chinches de cama. Me ofrecieron cambiar de habitación y lavar mi ropa, pero decidí irme y solicitar la devolución. Tuve que insistir muchísimo hasta que finalmente me la hicieron, no me daban comprobante. A simple vista el lugar parecía limpio, pero las chinches salen de noche y viven en la madera de las camas. Después de mas de 10 dias sigo con picazón y heridas. Horrible experiencia. Descarten por completo esta opción si son Alérgicos!!! Las picaduras son enormes y la picazón dura por lo menos 1 semana, las marcas a pesar de gastar en diferentes cremas, no se fueron. Destaco la atención de los voluntarios y algunos trabajadores, en especial Erica, que intentó ayudarme aunque el señor Pedro, gerente del lugar, ni siquiera le respondía, a ella. Y luegi me acusó de maltrato, cuando fue una de las pocas personas que me ayudo, y le agradecí de todas maneras. A él le falta desarrollar la atención al cliente: me dijo que debía agradecer que me devolvieran el dinero, porque la reserva era sin reembolso, aunque vio cada foto que le envié. Después de todo el mal momento y las heridas en el cuerpo, lo mínimo que correspondía eran disculpas. Nunca me pasó algo así. Amo visitar Brasil y lo seguiré haciendo, pero de ahora en adelante leeré mejor las opiniones, porque descubrí que a otras personas les ocurrió lo mismo. Finalmente me devolvieron gran porcentaje del dinero, agradezco haber podido solventar en el momento con mi dinero otro sitio .

I had an ok time at Bamboo Hostel. All the front members of staff were great especially Samuel, who was a great person to talk too at any given time. He was a cool guy & hope to cross paths again. At the same time however, the state of the rooms unfortunately were infested with bed bugs. I have travelled to other hostels & I’ve not had this issue before. Then again, what makes a hostel for me is the people and Bamboo Hostel provided a great base for location & experience :)

The beds were old and didn't seem very clean, the shower was never hot and, like the toilet, couldn't be locked. The atmosphere was nice, but I wouldn't recommend swimming in the pool, which is very small and wasent clean. I had to leave after one day because of bedbugs. Other people in my room also had to change beds/rooms because of it. Later, I heard that the entire room had already been fumigated once, but this clearly did not help. Que tenía habitaciones con chinches y sabiendo me mandaron igual ,me picaron por todos lados y alas 2 :30 am pedí que me cambie de habitación ,me tuve que bañar de nuevo ,pero me siguió picando el cuerpo …

Expérience cauchemardesque!! Ma pire expérience d'auberge de jeunesse. 1e nuit d'un road trip de 5 semaines, nous avions originellement prévu un séjour d'1semaine mais dès la 1e nuit j'ai vu apparaitre des dizaines de piqures de PUNAISES DE LIT. 85 piqures en 1 nuit !! Ca a totalement pourri les 10 premiers jours de mon séjour. Nous avons biensur signalé le problème aux responsables qui nous ont proposés de changer de chambre mais toutes les chambres étaient infestées (dejections de punaises de lit, autres locataires massivement piqués, punaises de lit mortes dans les litteries). Nous avons donc changé de logement en urgence. Sur le plan financier le personnel a été correct : Nous avons été intégralement remboursées et ils ont financé nos 6 lessives. En revanche nous y sommes repassé plusieurs fois pour fignoler les démarches et ils n'ont pas semblé prendre très au sérieux leur problème de punaises de lit : pas de traitement des chambres, ni d'évacuation de l'auberge, seulement du cache misère. Nous avons aussi été traité de façon assez mal aimable comme si le problème venait de nous, un charmant surnom de "bed bugs girls", des excuses sur la toute fin du bout des lèvres.

Our stay, though otherwise pleasant, was dominated by bedbugs. We found one the first morning, reported it, and were moved, but over the next days we were covered in bites, showing a serious infestation. Staff were friendly, upgraded us, and offered laundry, but the room wasn’t cleared or fumigated. The bed bugs and the matter of the room not being cleared out and professionally fumigated means we are unsure as to whether the issue of bedbugs is taken as seriously as getting a good review is.

GROS PROBLÈME DE SALUBRITÉ ! INFESTATION DE PUNAISES DE LITS DANS TOUTES LES CHAMBRES! Nous avons été piquées de partout. Sinon salle de bain propre. Petit déjeuner de qualité moyenne. Pour les punaises de lit le personnel nous a intégralement remboursé le séjour. En revanche les autres voyageurs n’ont pas été remboursé. Au total: vrai manque de vérification des lits et besoin de changer les vieux matelas, manque de nettoyage régulier. N’allez pas pas dans cet hôtel sans vérifier les matelas!

Fiz a reserva exclusiva para o show da Lady Gaga. Precisava dos dias 2 ao 5 de maio, mas não o sistema não deixava. Tive que selecionar de 2 a 6 pra poder garantir vaga, ou seja, paguei uma diária que não utilizei. Isso foi logo após o anúncio de que ela viria pro Rio. Foi oferecido um churrasco, no valor de R$ 30,00. Eu e meu amigo decidimos participar. Estávamos esperando, quando liberou todos foram pegar a comida e as carnes, quando chegou na nossa vez, ficamos sem prato e solicitamos ao gerente que disse que ia resolver e não resolveu. Ficamos sem prato, sem comer a comida que tinha, apenas comemos alguns pedaços de carne. Por fim, achei dois percevejos embaixo do meu travesseiro no último dia de hospedagem.

**READ THIS** **BED BUGS** **Edit update following owner response** - You did not deal with the bed bugs issue immediately. That is a complete lie. I suspect they are still there. You just moved us into another room - we watched the cleaner “deal with them” and she just sprayed some kind of spray on the bed. They were still there the night afterwards - yes I know you have other rooms available but YOU moved us into the 12 bed dorm??? - I do need “anything else” - a refund for my booking next week. Firstly - they offer you a free beer to give them 5 stars review! Do not believe other reviews!!!! I have proof of our conversations on WhatsApp and will post them if necessary. We had a terrible experience of bamboo hostel. Bed Bugs - one our group had bed bugs in their bed. They got bitten a lot! I have attached a picture of one. When we reported this to the staff they did not sort this out, they just offered to pay for our washing. After arguing with them all day, they agreed to move us into new rooms but this was only from the night after, so we had to stay in the same room again and she got bitten even more. To make things worse, 2/3 of us got downgraded from a 6 bed dorm to a 12 bed dorm. The 12 bed dorms are tiny - there is about enough floor space to fit 6 people standing up and they would be squashed - I would not recommend booking here at all. There is no place to put your big bags - the lockers are small. Do not book these rooms!! They also offered us free breakfast but I would not trade free breakfast for being bitten by bed bugs. Hygiene - one of our group has food poisoning one day and blocked the toilet in our shared bathroom. When we told the staff about this they said the cleaners would fix this. We watched the cleansing staff go into the bathroom and they ignored it! When we told the reception staff about this they told us that there’s nothing they can do and it would have to wait until the next day. We had to argue with them all day - through WhatsApp - and threaten to leave bad reviews and leave the hostel before they fixed this. It is basic hygiene standards. Staff - some of the staff are nice, but there are some that do not seem to care at all. They sell it as a “family vibe” but I describe it as a culture of disinterest. Refunds - I unfortunately am booked here again next week. When I asked for a refund they just said because I booked it through hostel world they could do nothing about a refund. That is absolute nonsense. It is not hostel worlds hostel - it is bamboos. During carnival it is £80/night for a 12 bed dorm - this is absolutely crazy. I want my money back and I do not want to stay here again. The location is good. The rest is not.

Bed bugs - when we complained to the staff that we had bed bugs their initial response was that we should clean our clothes and they would cover the cost. When pushed they agreed to letting us move rooms but downgraded 2/3 of us from a 6 bed dorm to a 12 bed dorm. The 12 beds are awful - do not stay in one. Hygiene - one of our party was sick and unfortunately blocked the toilet in our room.The cleaning staff saw this and ignored it! We had to threaten them with a bad review for them to fix this

Hostel avec une bonne ambiance, bien placé MAIS : punaises de lit qui nous ont valu une réaction dermato énorme à devoir aller aux urgences, laver TOUS nos sacs / vêtements / chaussures et quitter les lieux. Nos lits ont été reloués de suite avec « un nettoyage » soit disant alors qu’il faut traiter la totalité du dortoir à 120 degrés. Ce n’est pas à prendre à la légère sinon tous les hostels seront contaminés. Nous avons toutefois apprécié le remboursement de nos nuits pour loger ailleurs.

Fue la peor experiencia en hostel que tuvimos, los colchones llenos de pulgas y chinches. Más de 120 picaduras y nadie se hizo cargo de nada!! No desinfectaron, no nos dieron ninguna solución, te cobran hasta para respirar y está todo sucio , colchones viejos húmedos y llenos de bichos. Nunca más, no vuelvo ni gratis. SON UN DESASTRE

El personal súper buena onda. Pero la experiencia no fue tan buena, debido a que el cuarto donde me tocó no tenía vidrio en la ventana, por lo que se escuchaba todo el ruido de afuera y el aire acondicionado no podría acondicionar la habitación, por lo que las noches se hacían calurosas. Tuve que pedir cambio de sábanas al 3er día porque amanecí con picaduras de chinches (a otros chicos le dio brotes de alergia debido a estas picaduras). Otro punto en contra fue que en la heladera comunitaria no se respetaban las etiquetas, a varias personas le robaron la comida.

Al notificarlo al staff me cambiaron de habitación pero a los 2 días y sin previo aviso movieron todas mis cosas y me volvieron a ubicar en la habitación infectada. Mi pasaporte estuvo desaparecido unas horas. Al volver a la habitación resultó no estar desinfectada y me volvieron a comer las chinches y pulgas… des del staff todo lo solucionan con desayunos gratis que no valen nada…no lo recomiendo..
