Grand Hostel Berlin Classic

I would give zero stars if I could. Unfortunately, it seems like many of the great hostels in Berlin did not survive the pandemic. I booked Grand Hostel Classic and I was excited for my stay. When I arrived, I was not greeted with a not-so-friendly receptionist but it’s Berlin so ok. No information was given about the city which was fine by me because I have been there many times but for first time visitors to Berlin, this might be a real drawback. Also, I was charged for bedsheets which is ridiculous as most hostels include this as part of the room rate because obviously you would not want people bringing in their own bedsheets as that is unhygienic. I should have seen that as a red flag, but it was late, so I went into my room and the locker that was supposed to be for me was occupied but unlocked so I removed the items in there as another guest decided to use two lockers. I tried to get some sleep with ear plugs, but it was impossible due to a variety of reasons including a pigeon’s nest outside the window, an itchy bed probably due to bed bugs, creaky stairs, guests outside in the hall, a train, etc. In addition, I had the worst dorm members possible that woke up at 5:30 and 7:30 respectively so needless to say, sleep was very elusive. To top it all off, the bathrooms ran out of toilet paper during the night, I have never seen that happen at a hostel before. The showers were not clean and looked like prison showers not in a good way. The next morning, I was going to ask the receptionist if they could help by offering a different room, but the receptionist only spoke German. How is that possible in an international city like Berlin where the receptionist only speaks German? He was unhelpful and just provided me with a wrong email address to contact the manager. I told him that since he could not help me, I would check out and ask for a refund for the nights that I did not stay which I think is fair. I checked out and had to find another place to stay. I looked on the website to find the right email address to discuss with the manager a way to process a refund as I booked a 9 night stay but only stayed 1 night. The manager emails later in the day saying let’s look at other rooms and I am like I already checked out because no one was on-site at 9 am on a Friday to help which is ridiculous. Thus far, I still have not received a refund, and they have probably decided to rent the room out to someone else. This property stole from me. They are keeping the money that I paid for a service they did not provide which is the definition of theft. I tried to find amicable solutions with the manager, but he seems more interested in being greedy and double-booking rooms so more power to him because karma works. Long story short, DO NOT BOOK this place unless you want to have to deal with conditions that prevent sleep and unhelpful shady people that will do whatever they can to make a quick buck. I am sad that many of the great hostels of Berlin did not survive the pandemic. This is absolutely a dump and DO NOT stay at Grand Hostel Classic. They also have Grand Hostel Urban which is probably just as bad.

Bedbugs! Bedbugs! Bedbugs! No compensation. Otherwise it was fine.

Great and helpful staff, but not that clean place to have high rate. They don't calculate the government taxes into price. They have some old dusty pieces of furniture, only one chair and very small table in 5 bed room. Bathroom could be cleaned more often; hairy bed sheets. It happened that we found few bed bugs, but stuff immediately blocked the room and did disinfection. All in all, it's OK, but the value is not for 4 and +. By the way - very nice and stylish old building.

Me and my boyfriend we stayed 4 nights. We had privat room which was full of bed bugs. I've got bites all over my body :-/. I know this may happened everywhere but Im so disappointed with hostel management they are not even answering my email. I also asked for money back. And nothing is happening since we left!!

The rooms have bedbugs and the staff does not take appropriate measures to ensure it doesn’t spread from room to room.
