Hamtramck Hostel

Large unmanaged dog inside. Blocking the stairs to the rooms. The dog barked and growled like crazy and no one came out to manage it. I know the response is going to be, "the dog has never and will never hurt anyone". But, guess what, no one was there to say that. Just me and a barking, growling, unmanaged dog in the middle of the night, inside, blocking the way. Plenty of other quirks that were somewhat manageable and a few other highly suspect issues. Can't recommend for any reason really.

The hostel is filthy in some parts. The shower areas always have obvious signs of use, and sometimes in an unpleasant way. The living room is not as clean as you'd hope. The kitchen is the only part that is acceptable in my opinion (and that still has obvious signs of use btw, sometimes in an unpleasant way). My room happened to be dirty. There were leftover medications from previous tenants and the window is full of filth. For this price I have much better rooms in comparable cities in the U...

I got bed bugs and the room was not sanitary

Pictures don't match reality. Needs signifikant maintenence. Dirty common area. People seem to life there permanently, but without their Mama around. Area around the Hostel also not the best. Muezzin asks people to pray through speackers. You're Not asked.

As a female traveler I didn’t feel safe because I was not allowed to lock the dorm rooms so everyone could come in every time (not only the people staying in there) and the door couldn’t close right so she opened randomly at night. Before I knew I wasn’t supposed to lock the door (nobody told me) I was woken up in the middle of the night (1:30am) because someone was hammering on the door (I was scared as hell and couldn’t sleep anymore) !!! This place does the job of keeping you from sleeping on the streets. The rooms are small and simple, and frankly the heat was not warm enough in mine with freezing temperatures outside. I had to wear socks and gloves inside. The bathrooms are sufficient with hot water and they give you a towel, which is nice. I only interacted with the staff through email. I don’t think I actually ever saw them the whole time I was there. The place has a funky smell in the hall, but not in rooms thankfull...

The check in was disorganized an the receptionist unfortunately has a poor grasp of English. The window screen to my room was broken and there is no a/c.

Overall this hostel is a great place to stay for the cost! The rooms were clean and had working AC. The staff was very kind and helpful for any questions you might have. The only complaint I have is that one of the three downstairs bathrooms looked filthy and unfinished.

Appropriate place if you’re passing by and looking for the cheapest option (far away from Detroit center but buses are taking you there). Ok for the most part but bathrooms were very dirty when I stayed.

Very nice staff, clean bathrooms, quiet environment. A bit distant from downtown but you can definitely get your 10k steps in getting there.

i loved staying there. everybody is super nice and helpful and they'll even cool for you! they made me feel so welcome and i'll stay there again! 1000000/10

Amazing place to stay in a really unique neighborhood. Call to prayer plays every morning in Hamtramck and you're close to some amazing walkable Bengali, Arab, Lebanese food and shops. Staff was nice and accommodating and we all hang out. Feels more like coming home than visiting. Solid kitchen with implements and fridges and spices and coffee. Cozy living and dining room. Backyard with hammock and seating and pretty garden. Shoutout to Tim, Travis, Josh, and everyone else on the staff!

Huge bang for your buck!!

Overall, I had a pleasant stay, though my rating may not fully reflect it. The interior and decor have seen better days, but for budget-conscious travelers, this shouldn't be a major concern. The place is somewhat clean, feels safe, and offers the basic amenities needed. The common area is quite cluttered, likely due to catering to long-term tenants. Staff were friendly and laid-back. One downside is the location. Navigating Detroit by bus is like a modern version of medieval torture.

Charming place, staff was friendly and chill, great places to have coffee in walking distance. Try the rose chai at Kitab Cafe nearby

Great option for Detroit. Wonderful people staying at the hostel and working there. It is an old building going through some upgrades but my bed and room were great. The kitchen was clean for how many people were using it and it had a good sense of community. I would only recommend more cleaning supplies in the bathroom and maybe thin bath rugs. Many people use the upstairs bathroom so it would be nice to keep it safe and clean.

A good place to stay to checkout the motor city. Super help staff and friendly people. The common area is a bit small but they do the best with that they got. Simple but functional rooms with A/C.

Amazing value. Staff is friendly. rooms are clean enough. Only critique is a minor fly problem due to weather and a trash collection problem in the kitchen.
