Puerta Vieja Hostel

All in all, it's a nice hostel. The food and atmosphere are good, and the bathrooms, etc., are clean. However, we had bed bugs in our beds. We’re completely covered in bites. The receptionist wasn’t surprised when I mentioned it and led us switch beds. Nothing was done with our old beds in the meantime. They weren’t cleaned (while we were there).

Er waren bed bugs… ondanks dat ik gevraagd had bij het inchecken of men hier nog steeds last van had, omdat ik dit online had gelezen, werd dit ontkent. Bij mijn tweede nacht bleken ze er gewoon te zitten

Avoid this place at all costs, as they have BED BUGS in multiple dorm rooms. Unfortunately, they don’t take the necessary measures to properly disinfect and handle the situation. In the room I was originally checked into, one of the girls woke up covered in bites. Their reaction was simply to move everyone to another room instead of isolating the problem and addressing it properly. I personally did not stay in that room because of this, and when I asked for a private room to feel safe, they would only offer it if I paid extra. Because of how poorly this was handled, I decided to change accommodation completely. They are clearly not taking this issue seriously, especially considering there were already comments about bed bugs in certain chats about this hostel several weeks ago. Unfortunately, I wasn’t aware of these beforehand.

Es gab leider viel zu viele Geschichten über Bettwanzen und das Personal hat abgestritten, dass es diese weiterhin gibt. Es soll vor allem der Dorm 5 betroffen sein und dies ein Problem seit mehreren Monaten sein. Ich würde nicht die Halbpension empfehlen. Das Abendessen war nicht lecker und die vegetarische Portion kleiner als die mit Fleisch. Das Frühstück war okay. Mein Raum war leider super kalt und als ich gefragt habe, ob die Klimaanlage abgeschaltet werden kann, wurde mir mitgeteilt, dass es keine gäbe. Trotzdem habe ich dauerhaft kalten Wind ins Zimmer geblasen bekommen von der „Lüftung“.

Avoid this place, there are BED BUGS in multiple dorms!! In the room I was checked into, a girl woke up covered in bites. Management handles this very poorly and it seems to be an ongoing issue (based on prior complaints I wasn’t aware of). They expected me to pay extra for a private room just to feel safe. I ended up leaving. For your own peace of mind, stay away!

Can confirm bedbugs are an issue currently. Besides this I booked a dorm bed for the night before I arrived at 7.30am from the night bus on purpose so I could shower and have a nap, however my bed was not made? So I had to nap on the lounge until lunch time when someone made it. Not only that but they didn’t even give me a tour of the hostel for where to find anything. The social atmosphere was good but operationally this place needs to pick up its game.

Im Allgemeinen ein super Hostel. Sehr viele Angebote und leckeres Frühstück. Was ich trotzdem hier festhalten möchte, weil ich mir wünschte, dass es andere Reisende auch tun. Es gab in einem Zimmer Bettwanzen. Leider hatte ich das Gefühl, dass damit nicht transparent umgegangen wurde und weiterhin Gäste in das Zimmer eingecheckt wurden. Hier sollte professioneller gehandelt werden.

very sociable and nice hostel, I had a great stay! there are different activities, tours and also just hangout spaces on the property, which make it so easy to have a great time here! I used the kitchen a couple times, it has the necessary things in it. also regarding the bed bugs: I actually stayed in the dorm 5B and no one complained of bed bigs in the three days I've been here. all good, definitly recommend it!

English: Everything was great: the guys at the bar, the vibe, everything, until one morning I woke up and my neighbor was complaining about bed bugs. She had bed bugs all over her body—from her neck to her toes. Reading the reviews, I saw that our room (5b) had complaints about bed bugs dating back to November 2025 (4 months ago - you can see on HostelWorld reviews) and even earlier. So messed up. I had to argue with reception to get them to do my laundry (even though I was their direct neighbor). It doesn't matter where the bugs came from, if someone has bites, that bed/the room is infested. Español: Todo iba genial: los chicos del bar, la vibra, todo, hasta que una mañana me desperté y mi vecina se quejaba de chinches. Tenía chinches por todo el cuerpo – del cuello hasta los pies - pobrecita. Leer las reseñas, vi que nuestra habitación (5b) tenía quejas sobre chinches desde noviembre 2025 (hace 4 meses - puedes ver en HostelWorld) y antes. Que mal pedo. Tuve que discutir para que me lavaran la ropa (siendo su vecina directa). Da igual de dónde vengan, si alguien tiene picaduras, ya hay.

Puerta Vieja is a very nice hostel if you want to meet people. However, I think they have a serious problem with bed bugs. I’ve heard from multiple guests that they got bites and saw some bugs crawling on their bed. They let the people switch rooms, but if they’re not fixing the problem thoroughly, the bed bugs will keep coming. The staff could be a bit more friendlier. Their English wasn’t always as good either, making it difficult to understand each other.

Please be aware that there is bed bugs at this hostel! I was in room 5B! The atmosphere is great and the people that work there are so kind but dealing with bed bugs suck. Make sure to check your bed if you stay here.

Todo iba genial: los chicos del bar, la vibra, todo, hasta que una mañana me desperté y mi vecina se quejaba de chinches. Tenía chinches por todo el cuerpo - del cuello hasta los pies. Fast hätte ich dem Hostel 5 Sterne gegeben, da es gut organisiert war, die Einrichtungen angemessen waren und das Essen lecker. Leider mussten wir jedoch für unsere 3. Nacht das Zimmer wechseln und stellten dann nachts fest, dass Bettwanzen im Bett waren. Von der Nachtschicht an der Rezeption ernteten wir darauf nur ein Achselzucken. Da wir um 4 Uhr ein Shuttle nehmen mussten, war die Nacht somit leider sehr früh für uns vorbei.

Eigentlich ein sehr nettes Hostel. Leider war die Musik in der 2. Nacht bis weit nach Mitternacht sehr laut. Und in der 3. Nacht, für die wir wegen Verlängerung umziehen mussten, hatten uns Bettwanzen nachts um den Schlaf gebracht, sehr ärgerlich.

Bedbugs in room 5B! When I told the staff it seemed like they already knew about it and knew the process to clean my stuff right away. Not sure how they dealed woth the room though as I heard someone was assigned to my bed the next day.... I also found another review saying the exact same thing. Otherwise, I liked the idea of the hostel but the execution was not the best, for dinner there was not enough space for everyone to sit and there were people smoking while you eat.

Ok, lo que voy a escribir es de cuidado, el lugar es muy bonito, las actividades igual entre otras cosas sin embargo lo que mata al lugar es que no existe un control de calidad e higiene, debido a que en las habitaciones puedes llevarte huéspedes desagradables, en este caso, fue totalmente incómodo y desagradable encontrar piquetes en cuerpo y llevarnos "chinches de cama" es todo un caso porque refiere el bajo control de higiene. Se RECOMIENDA ASEO Y FUMIGACIÓN

Aparentemente el lugar estaba limpio pero la cama tenia chinches, mi pareja y yo terminamos enronchados y cuando se lo dijimos a la chica de recepción no supo que decir. El lugar necesita ser fumigado urgentemente

We identified bedbugs and whilst we were offered a new room, it didn’t seem like the hostel would properly deal with the issue. They just change the sheets and didn't let us wash our clothes, only dry. The hostel itself has nice communal areas. The tours you can book through the hostel are of a mixed quality - check the tour company before booking. The food was not that great and I would suggest it isn’t worth paying for as part of the room as you can just pay for meals you want to eat.

Stayed in a really moldy room. In the dorms where bed bugs. Dorn-Beds where really uncomfortable. The furniture in the shared areas is dirty and broken. Saw a rat running around the kitchen in the garden where all the food for the guests is cooked.

Wir haben hier gebucht, weil dies angeblich das "beste Hostel Mexikos 2024" ist. Positiv: Lage, Licht und Steckdose am Bett, Betten teilweise mit Vorhang, große Schließfächer, Frühstück und Abendessen inklusive, Aktivitäten werden angeboten. Negativ: das Frauen-Badezimmer stand ständig unter Wasser, häufig verstopfte Toiletten, Essen eher mäßig, in unserem Zimmer gab es Bettwanzen, im Essbereich wird geraucht, Bauarbeiten mitten im Hostel, schlechte Internetverbindung. Insgesamt enttäuschend.

This is the best hostel I’ve ever stayed BUT in my case I got a bad bed in the volunteer room infested with bed bugs. The bathrooms could also use some more drainage for the showers.

there were bedbugs in my room (which the personnel are denying until today), the whole situation was handled very unprofessionally, they waited until the next day to deep-clean the room. One of the volunteers there was extremely rude, I had to get another worker to solve the problems with her. she excused herself to me later that day, which was a great move. all in all, the workers were not the friendliest, the local staff and the volunteers as well. buuuuut... great free food, great activities

BEDBUGS ! Nous étions plusieurs à en avoir, en plein milieu de la nuit nous avons changé de vêtements et de lit (gardien de nuit réactif) mais il y en avait aussi dans les autres lits (dans d’autres dortoirs) On a voulu demander le remboursement et partir, ils n’ont pas accepté, ils voulaient nous changer de dortoir (nous mettre dans un dortoir qui avait été fermé à cause de bedbugs quelques jours avant…). Aucune négociation possible, nous sommes quand même partis.

C’est tres dur de noté cet hostel, il est grand, y’a pleins d’endroit pour chiller, c’est un hostel pour rencontrer des gens et faire la fête, t’as un free breakfast + free dîner qui sont très généreux MAIS … j’ai eu des BEDBUGS dans deux chambres différentes (et pas de remboursement) + je suis tombée malade (peut être que c’est leur nourriture? Beaucoup de gens l’étaient également).. À vous de voir si vous souhaitez prendre le risque. D’autres chambres n’étaient pas contaminées …

had several friends experience bed bugs in this hostel. i didnt suffer personally. the hostel includes breakfast and dinner, was one of the best value I stayed in. overall recommend.

How does this place have 9.3 overall rating, maybe cause of free breakfast+dinner?? but as an experienced traveller, it was one of the worst hostels I have stayed at.The free breakfast and dinner looks amazing but I saw chef's use bad hygiene (bare hands on cooked food). I got bad food poisoning, staff simply said that "it's normal here" but not normal when I know 4 or 5 others had food poisoning from the hostel food. Bed bugs in dorm room. Atmosphere also not good, especially karaoke night.

There were bedbugs here, didn’t realize they were bedbugs until I left but somebody else asked to change rooms and they were rude and dismissive. It also got very cold at night as the window didn’t close properly in the top room. One good thing was the food though, free breakfast and dinner.

Bed bugs in the rooms. Me and others left with tons of bites. Staff was incredibly rude and hostile. All my previous experiences at hostels have been great, this one was terrible. Your on your own here.

Bedbugs toen wij er waren!

Amazing hostel actually. You get free breakfast + free dinner (if you sign up before 1 p.m.) Free cocktailnights and over all super cheap. The staff is friendly. Don’t touch de tapwater, cause you get sick there very easily. Because of the free things, everyone’s there so it’s crazy easy to meet people. We did have bedbugs though, but the staff fixed it once we said it, but they didn’t care too much about it. You have to tel them about the steps you need to take, which was a bit odd, haha.

We hebben hier bedbugs gekregen samen met 3 andere mensen in de kamer. Achteraf hoorden we dat dit 5 dagen eerder ook al was gebeurd en het hostel liet weer mensen in onze bedden slapen nadat we uitcheckten. Verschrikkelijk

Bed bugs in multiple rooms. At least 4 large rats in the kitchen climbing on the open pantry. Property is well aware (Would recommend containers or a sealed storage unit). Almost no hot water

There are rats, I think there were bed bugs as a couple of the beds were dismantled and removed, some of the volunteer staff were unwell but made to work.

The hostel is nice and friendly and the staff take good care of the hostel, however unfortunately I had bed bug bites from the hostel. The staff handled it really well when I told them about this, refunded my night cleaned my clothes and changed my room. However, the staff gave no indication that it was an ongoing problem. Then when I went to Oaxaca city I heard that other people had the same problem there.

Bed bugs !!! Really great hostel, with good service as breakfast and diner included with choice of local food, shared space are nice and cosy. There is also a bar inside the hostel and many activities organized. BUT THERE ARE BED BUGS IN DORM N°2. Staff is aware of the problem and closed that dorm for two days to clean but it actually didn't work. I got bitten on the hand and the forehead. Sensitive people please avoid that dorm...

Breakfast and Dinner sooo good. Really nice social hostel. Cool activities and clean. I had no bedbugs.

The food was really nice, also all the parties and it's a great place to meet people. But I can confirm the bed bugs in the dorm n°2. we saw the bites and my friend developped a really bad allergie. They know the problem as they closed this dorm for 2 days before our arrival and told us about it.

Best hostel in Mexico! The free breakfast and diner is amazing and everyone is lovely! The bedbugs have been dealt with, so definitely come and stay here! Best time every!

Place was infested with bedbugs, personnel was very incompetent in dealing with it. Would not recommend, still itching.

amazing atmosphere, 2 free meals, 2 days of free drinks… would’ve been amazing had they dealt with the bedbug situation. I found one on me and they offered to move me to another room so I did and the next night a man moved in there too and I asked if it was due to bedbugs and he said yes and that he had been placed in the exact same bed I’d reported the bedbugs in.

Good hostel, but unfortunately I got bedbugs there even though they assured us that the bedbugs were gone. I didn’t see them but I got bites all over. Be careful!

Bed bugs confirmed. I don't think they did anything substantial to remedy the situation either. Just made up the bed for the next person. I'm still giving it a great rating because it's such a uniquely amazing hostel. Still worth a few welts over the arms and torso. So now you have a decision - do you roll the dice? As long as you don't get dorm 2, you should be fine...

Cuidado con el personal de recepcion... son agresivos y maltrataron a un grupo de huéspedes de Holland. Y terminaron corriendo los del Hostel. El servicio del hostel es pésimo. Aparte no puedes invitar a nadie al lugar. El trato de los recepcionistas es de lo peor. No hablan inglés, parecen militares. El lugar de voluntarios es un verdadero asco. Sin duda no recomiendo este Hostel. Está infestado de CHINCHES
