Burundi has active official travel advisories as of 2026-05-15, with avoid-all-travel advice for several border, northern, and western areas and avoid-non-essential-travel advice for the country as a whole from multiple governments.
What Is Being Advised
Avoid all travel to the highest-risk areas named in official advisories: areas near the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda borders, parts of Bujumbura Province, Cibitoke, Bubanza, Bujumbura Rural, Kibira National Park, and the named communes and routes listed below.
For Burundi as a whole, several official advisories say to avoid non-essential travel or stronger. If the trip is optional, postpone it. If travel is essential, check the newest official advice before moving between provinces, monitor local media, follow local authority instructions, and leave room for route changes or sudden disruption.
Where exactly this applies
- Border areas with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda are flagged for armed attacks, armed group activity, military movement, refugee movement, and conflict spillover.
- Global Affairs Canada names Cibitoke province, Bubanza province, and the area west of and including the RN5 highway in Bujumbura Rural.
- The UK FCDO names Mugina, Cibitoke, Bukinyayana, Bubanza, and Mpanda communes, citing possible rebel-group presence in Kibira National Park and possible armed incursions from the DRC.
- Switzerland advises against travel to the northern part of the new Bujumbura province, including the former provinces of Cibitoke, Bubanza, and Bujumbura Rural, and to Kibira National Park.
- New Zealand says to avoid all travel to border areas with the DRC and Rwanda. It advises avoiding non-essential travel elsewhere in Burundi.
- France uses mapped security zones: areas formally advised against, areas advised against except for imperative reasons, and areas requiring reinforced vigilance.

The Practical Read
Seven governments in the inputs have avoid-all-travel or equivalent highest-level advice for Burundi or specific parts of Burundi, checked on 2026-05-14. The most repeated geography is the DRC/Rwanda border belt, northern and western areas, and parts of Bujumbura Province.
The clearest armed-security cluster is around the DRC border. Canada cites clashes between the military and armed groups in Cibitoke, Bubanza, and west of RN5 in Bujumbura Rural. The UK says increased armed group activity and conflict along the Burundi-DRC border could affect people on the Burundian side in Bujumbura Province. New Zealand warns against travel to border areas with both the DRC and Rwanda because of armed attacks.
Some advisories split Burundi into a countrywide warning and stricter regional no-go areas. Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel to Burundi because of the conflict in neighbouring DRC, violent crime, and political violence. Canada separately advises avoiding all travel to specified western and northern areas. New Zealand applies avoid-non-essential-travel advice to Burundi generally and avoid-all-travel advice to DRC/Rwanda border areas.
France has three active current-update topics: security at the DRC border, cholera vigilance, and a Bujumbura ammunition-depot fire. For travelers, that means checking border security, health instructions, and local disruption in Bujumbura before and during a trip.
Japan’s listed entries are dated 2022-09-28, older than the 2026 updates from Canada, the UK, France, Australia, Switzerland, and Ireland. They remain standing official advice. The 2026 pages provide more current detail on named areas and active alerts.
If You Still Have To Go
Before booking or crossing a border, check the newest official page from your own government and at least one source with named regional detail. Canada, the UK, New Zealand, Switzerland, and France give the most useful geography for this article.
Use the named regional restrictions for route planning. The restrictions name provinces, communes, national park areas, border zones, and the RN5 corridor. A route that looks acceptable at country level may still pass through an area another government says to avoid completely.
Use official updates, local media, and local authority instructions while moving. The official inputs support caution around overland movement near the DRC/Rwanda border and flagged western/northern areas. They provide no basis for claiming that one transport mode or route is safer than another.
