  • bijgewerkt 2026-05-15

Nigeria has active official travel warnings as of 2026-05-15. Several governments advise avoiding all travel to named states, roads, coastal areas, and border regions because of terrorism, kidnapping, armed attacks, violent crime, inter-communal violence, piracy, and health/security updates.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid all travel to Nigerian areas under the highest official warning level. If your trip is not essential, postpone Nigeria travel unless your exact city, route, and dates are outside the named high-risk areas and you have current local security advice.

Check the latest official advice before booking, before departure, and again before any intercity movement. Several advisories flag roads, border areas, the Niger Delta, coastal waters, and northern and central states; airport arrival leaves overland-route risk unresolved.

When advisories overlap, follow the stricter warning for the exact place or route you will use. Country-level avoid-non-essential-travel advice and named-area avoid-all-travel warnings apply at their own stated levels.

Where exactly this applies
  • North East: Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, Jigawa.
  • North West: Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi.
  • North Central: Plateau, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Nasarawa.
  • Niger Delta and coastal areas: Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Ebonyi, Rivers, the Gulf of Guinea, and coastal or river areas named by individual advisories.
  • Specific city or route warnings appear for Kano, Abuja, Lagos, Calabar, Ogun, and the Abuja-Kaduna road, depending on the advisory.

What The Warnings Name

Canada’s 2026-05-06 advice tells travelers to avoid all travel to multiple northwestern, northcentral, northeastern, and Niger Delta states because of terrorism, armed attacks, kidnapping, inter-communal and sectarian violence. Germany’s 2026-05-14 update warns against travel to Borno, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Kebbi, Kwara, Plateau, parts of Niger, Adamawa, Nassarawa, and Rivers except by air to Port Harcourt.

The United Kingdom’s 2026-04-01 advice splits Nigeria by region. It advises against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Katsina, and Zamfara, with a lower restrictive warning for Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, and Sokoto. Japan’s 2025-12-19 notices include Level 4 language telling travelers to evacuate and not travel for listed areas, plus Level 3 and Level 2 areas elsewhere.

Italy’s 2026-04-21 advice names several southern and Niger Delta states for avoid-travel guidance, including Abia, Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, and Edo. It also flags Kano for terrorism and kidnapping, Abuja and Lagos for kidnapping, and the Abuja-Kaduna road for kidnapping, robbery, and flight disruption.

City-level guidance remains restrictive. Canada tells travelers to use a high degree of caution in Calabar and Lagos because of crime. Canada also advises against non-essential travel to Nigeria overall, including Abuja, because of the unpredictable security situation and the risk of terrorism, crime, inter-communal clashes, armed attacks, and kidnappings.

France has Nigeria security-zone advice checked on 2026-05-14, with red, orange, and yellow zones, plus active updates titled “Situation securitaire” and “Fievre de Lassa.” Use the France Diplomatie page for exact zone boundaries and health wording before relying on it for a route decision.

Trip Decision Notes

For northern Nigeria, central conflict-affected states, the Niger Delta, coastal waters, or road travel between major cities, treat the official advice as a route constraint. The supplied advisories support avoiding or postponing travel in named areas. The supplied advisories support transport-mode claims only where an advisory gives a specific exception, such as Germany’s Rivers warning except by air to Port Harcourt.

For Lagos, Abuja, Calabar, or another city that appears under a lower warning in one advisory, check the newest official page before committing. Several governments place cities inside broader Nigeria-wide avoid-non-essential-travel advice, and advisories classify the same country-level risk differently.
