Syria remains under avoid-all-travel advice as of 2026-05-15. Recent official notices cite volatile security conditions, terrorism risk, armed clashes, airstrikes, kidnappings, limited consular help, degraded medical services, and transport or border disruption.
What Is Being Advised
Avoid all travel to Syria. If you are already inside the country, check your own government's latest advice before moving, confirm whether consular help is available from inside Syria, and follow local instructions on crossings, curfews, airport operations, and departure routes.
Use the avoid-all-travel advice as the trip-planning baseline. Airport, border, and heightened-caution notices are operational updates for people already dealing with Syria travel; they do not soften the current travel advice.

Why The Advice Is At The Top Level
The reviewed government advisories all point the same way: avoid all travel to Syria. Germany updated its Syria warning on 2026-05-14 and says its embassy in Damascus is closed for general visitors, with emergency consular help extremely limited.
Canada's 2026-05-04 advisory cites regional tensions, volatile security conditions, armed clashes, airstrikes, criminality, kidnappings, and terrorism. The UK's 2026-02-27 warning cites unpredictable security conditions and terrorist attack risk, and says British government consular support is not available from within Syria.
Spain recommends no travel to Syria under any circumstances, citing armed conflict, high alert for Spanish nationals in Syria, and severely degraded medical services. Japan keeps Syria nationwide at Level 4, its evacuation and do-not-travel level.
Transport And Border Disruption
Italy's 2026-04-29 update flags restored flights to Amman and Istanbul, Turkish authorities closing land crossings with Syria, fuel shortages, flight disruption, and airport disruption. For someone already in the region, those details affect movement and exit planning; for a prospective traveler, the advice remains avoid all travel.
The UK also warns that regional escalation has created security risks and travel disruption. France has active April 2026 notices on Syria's security situation and terrorist threat.
Recent Political Context
New Zealand's Syria advice notes that the Assad regime fell on 2024-12-08 and that Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham assumed control over much of Syria. The current advisories still cite unresolved security risks, limited support, and disrupted movement.
Source Notes
For travelers already inside Syria, the practical constraints are the important part: some governments describe limited or unavailable consular support, degraded medical services, airport and border disruption, and the need to monitor reliable information before any movement.
