Front desk people were great but there are bedbugs

I was really scared by the reviews I read about this place but my stay has been amazing. No bedbugs, free wine, great people! Will definitely be coming back if i’m ever lucky enough to find myself in Rome again.

Dirty rooms, smelly sheets, bedbugs all over our bodies after. Smelled like cigarette smoke.

I usually do not write negative reviews much but this is maybe the first time. We stayed on the filth floor with two other rooms and shared kitchen. During our stay, the water was not working properly. I was in the shower and suddenly water stopped completely. I informed the receptionist but the answer was like "sorry we can not fix the whole system right now", therefore our 5 day stay was kinda lack of water. The water was on and off all the time which was annoying. The shared kitchen was lack of stuffs for example: No cutting board, no boiling kettle, the dishwasher did not work, the plates were bit dirty. I have read the review from other travellers that there were bed bugs in the room but luckily our room was fine. No signs of bed bugs have been found. The toilet was lack of soap but generally was clean. The plus thing of this hostel is that, it is close to the termini and there was stores/cafes all around. To be honest, I do not recommend to stay in this place unless you want to take risk. Our price for one night was 70e/ per night so it was not cheap either. We should have deserved a better service to be honest.

Awful time - bed bugs in the bed and promised a refund but 3 months of my emails and calls being ignored and no refund

BED BUGS!!! Check the bed sheets, curtains, AND behind any picture frames before settling into your room. I hate to write a negative review as the staff was quite nice and the room looked awesome among our initial check in. Our actual beds had no signs of bugs but I unfortunately found them in the corner of the painting in our room. We then told the receptionist on duty once we found them and he insinuated that we must have brought them from our previous travels. I do not think the bugs travelled from our bags to the top left corner of a picture frame on the other side of the room. The receptionist did clean the room upon us finding the bugs but not a professional cleaning as it was later in the day and he explained he was the only one working at the moment and it was too late to call their official service. They also could not change our room as they were booked for the night. The next morning we woke up to find more bugs near the curtain and one of the beds. We again went to the receptionist and explained the situation from the night prior and how the room needed to be checked and cleaned again. This receptionist was much kinder and apologetic towards the situation. However, this sadly did not make up for the fact that we had to sleep in a room clearly infested with bed bugs. There was no compensation offered for this major inconvenience which was also a but disappointing. I would not recommend booking with this hostel unless you want to encounter some troubles on your travels.

Location is close to termini, which is nice, but we ended up with a bedbug infestation that cost lots to deal with (images show my room after the trip). Couldve used the money for a better stay instead.

The guy at the reception was great! Good location. We checked in easily but our room was about 200m down the road in a seperate building. The bathroom was extremely musty and smelt gross. The room was fine, clean linen. When we went to checkout there were 2 girls who had bedbugs in their beds and a different guy at the counter was pretending he couldn't speak English anymore.

DO NOT GO THERE! BED BUGS and awful service at the reception, they don't clean the room whatsoever

The location unfortunately does not make up for poor quality. Staff were friendly (the man on reception also spoke perfect English) but they don't have a lot to work with. My greatest issue was the bathrooms, the "ensuite bathroom" of my shared room was more of a cubicle-like box. It had no ventilation, and from a leaky toilet to a shower head that wouldn't stay upright, everything was broken in some way. Leaks and the lack of ventilation meant that the whole place was constantly wet and humid, resulting in a mouldy ceiling. Even with the lower price and good location, I could not recommend this place. Thankfully, I didn't have any bed bugs like other reviewers. However, I did encounter the man sleeping on the couches at reception (he appears to do this every night) and the terrible coffee at breakfast and terrible wine at happy hour.

Disgusting place, infested with bed bugs! During my stay I noticed bedbugs which i reported and was moved rooms, only for the other room to also be infested with bedbugs, we saw them crawling up the walls and they were in everyone’s beds. When I reported the bedbugs to the receptionist they didn’t seem to care and made remarks about how it’s not their fault and this happens often. They also promised me a full refund, it’s been almost a month of me emailing them chasing it up and they continue to make excuses for why they haven’t returned my money. They’re scammers and simply do not care about the state of the place. do not stay here it’s a disgusting place, the staff couldn’t care less, the facilities are basic and unclean and the breakfast is hardly a breakfast.

So I booked a night here because of it being close to Roma Termini and because of its cheap price. The night before my checkin, I came across the reviews on Google Maps and found many scary negative reviews but my experience were far from the claims! First of all the front desk men were nice. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and no bed bugs encountered. The rooms were secured with a common room plus another door to the dormitory. I loved my stay!

Reception was almost never at the desk. I had to wait long just to check in and out, and even ask them a question. Previous reviews spoke of bed bugs, and when I asked the staff about them they said they didn’t have issues with it. However after one night there I woke up covered in many small bites all over my legs, arms and torso that swole up terribly (I stilll have hyperpigmentation from weeks ago). I ended up putting on bug spray to go to bed. When I told the staff that the shower drain wasn’t working, they got incredibly defensive and said they cleaned it daily so there’s no way it could have not drained well. Wish that was the case and I wasn’t standing in a puddle of dirty water while taking a shower. One staff member (I believe the night shift receptionist) was incredibly unhelpful and refused to acknowledge that there was an issue, instead saying to tell his colleague and that it wasn’t his problem. Was happy to get out of there. Unfortunately could not cancel reservation and leave because it was nonrefundable, which after what I experienced, I can see why they make it so they get your money no matter what.

I would love to give this place a good review but when you get bed bugs from a stay, nothing good that happen can make up for it. I connected with one of the front desk workers a few times and he was incredibly nice but that was the only good thing about this place, the one guy. By 3:00 pm check in, our room wasn’t ready and we watched a guy wearing frumpy clothes and flip flops “clean” our room because he wasn’t finished. By clean, I mean he made our beds with linens (if you can them that) on the used bed of one of the other guest staying in our hostel dorm. After that he proceeded to lightly sweep the floor. I could tell the wooded floors were never mopped, just sweeped as if I went to the bathroom in my socks, my socks were getting dirty on the bottoms. The bathroom as well was dirty and didn’t seem well maintained. The soap felt gross and slimy and there weren’t any towels. Now the actual gross part, BED BUGS. I woke up the first day with a bite inside my ear and a few on my hand that I had under the pillow (also this pillow was gross, flat and had yellow stains). i thought the bites were from a bug that flew in through the open window and went about my day. Next night, even more. I thought maybe it was bed bugs but I saw no evidence. The last night, we got up early to leave for our flight when I saw an actual bed bug which is when I freaked out. At this point I have so many bites I was getting hives on my arms and legs. I am still terrified I might’ve brought some home after I tried my best to decontaminate my belongings. Right before leaving, we told someone at the front desk about the issue but they were literally asleep on the couch and didn’t care. Anyway, please stay away from here, bed bugs are not worth it EVER!

The service there was really helpful and nice. That is, for the front desk. However when we got to our room it still had yet to be cleaned and so we waited and watched the guy “clean”. Which was sweeping dust under beds and not sanitizing anything. He also put our new bedding on our hostel roommates bed which I found unsanitary. Also there were bed bugs which put a HUGE damper on our trip. We both are now covered in bites. Only other positive is it’s close to Roma Termini.

I know what you’re thinking. You’ve seen the reviews, the negative comments,.. the photographs. I stayed here at the beginning of the year. Jan 4th - 6th. There were indeed bedbugs. The rooms were a little ghetto. It didn’t smell amazing. But you get what you pay for. It is a low-cost option in a good location. You don’t get a towel. You need a padlock for a locker. But what do you expect. People really expect a 5/5 experience for 10-20€ per night in Rome 😆. It’s good enough for the price. If you want a better experience for this price, go to Eastern Europe, Central/SE Asia or South America!

The best: the location. Near the Station and close to peruvian restaurants. Service is ok. Free breakfast from 8 to 10am: disgusting coffee always vailable and some brioche are offered. Free aperitivo from 7 to 10pm: big bottles of white and red wine are offered with some small biscuits to grab. The worst: rooms. Bathrooms inside are not cleaned enough. I got bite by a spider or some bed bugs, still don't know. Also, messy and dirty kitchen. Free storage of luggage.

Our experience getting bed bugs and scammed at freedom hostel: Saw a dead bed bug on the floor. Receptionist went on long tangent how it’s ok, it’s dead, they disinfect. We stay the night. Next day, we wake up and see bed bugs in our beds. We tell receptionist. He comes up with us and sees the bed bugs, grabs the sheets and tells us that they will change the sheets. But that is not how you get rid of bed bugs!! No wonder they have a problem! Receptionist tells us to come back later after he talks to boss. When we come back, boss says they searched the room, couldn’t find any bugs. Obviously they’re not visible during the day. He says they can move us into another room, but no way are we going there after seeing how they “disinfect” They agree to give us a refund for our remaining nights, I give my bank info and they say they’ll send it our way later. Big mistake on my part, I emailed every few days the past month and they never answered. I can’t even leave my review on Hostelworld because they cancelled my entire trip. The guy was also mean and teased us for getting another room because it’s so expensive in the city.

We stayed here for one night in a private room. The room was clean and with all we needed. We are allowed to check for bed bugs before checking in. We did not have any bed bugs. The location is perfect. Only negativ: the luggage storage is accessible to many people and not observed by the staff, do not leave valuables.

The hotel should implement more rigorous cleaning procedures to eliminate these odors. Despite these issues, there were a few positives about my stay: The staff were generally polite and accommodating, doing their best to assist with the problems I encountered. The location of the hotel is convenient and accessible to nearby attractions. In conclusion, my stay at Fredom Traveller Host was marred by issues related to cleanliness, maintenance, and a bed bug infestation. I hope the management takes these concerns seriously and implements improvements to provide a more pleasant and comfortable experience for future guests. I would advise potential guests to inquire about the recent maintenance and cleanliness standards before booking their stay at this hotel.

NO RESERVEN en este hostel. Hay chinches (bed bugs) en la habitación, pedimos que nos cambie a otra y también había chinches. Tuvimos que irnos a un hotel porque no podíamos mas. No nos devolvieron nada del dinero. Google no me dejó subir fotos de las picaduras de chinches.

Worst hostel I've never been ! - shower is disgusting and falling apart - the room look like nothing in the picture - it was dirty and dusty below the beds And most of it BED BUGS

I stayed in September 2023 (yesterday) and they have serious bed bugs problems. I wish I didn't stay there

CAUTION: LONG READ -- WORST HOSTEL EVER -- BED BUGS When we arrive, no one is at hostel to check us in. Two other people who were waiting told us that they had been waiting for ten minutes. Another fifteen minutes passed until someone finally decided to show up. As the hostel worker dragged his feet, trailing a plastic bag filled with groceries behind him, he barely glances up and tells us he was out buying wine and treats for the guest. We told him we had booked a private room but wanted to see it before we decided to stay. We see the room, it's in a different building than the reception (maybe a 2 minute walk) and we decide it's not the best but it doesn't look horrible and we're only staying for a couple days. BIG MISTAKE. We pay for the room, grab our keys, and head into the room. Before we settled in, I decided to do a routine bed bug search. Low and behold there were beg bugs (proof in the pic below). I tell my partner, we go back to reception where no one is attending. We wait five minutes, walk to the back, see the receptionist having some beer with some others and we call him over. We politely tell him we have to check out because we have found bed bugs in our room. He said oh, yes, no problem and quietly starts to explain how we will get our money back through a wire transfer. He also begins to tell us that they had bed bugs a couple weeks ago in that same room, that they had disinfected everything and they thought it was fine. I'm no bed bug expert, but I don't think that you can just disinfect things...people bug bomb whole apartments for bed bug problems. Regardless, we just wanted to know that we were going to be getting a refund and didn't want to make too much of a fuss because we were tired and sometimes, hostels and/or hotels don't know about these issues. We did contemplate telling everyone in the hostel but we decided against that because it seemed like it could have been contained to just our room. Other than that, the hostel worker told us that we would have to sent us our name, bank wire number, and other information for the wire transfer and that we would get confirmation that the transfer initiated the next day. He said only the manager could initiate the wire transfer and that he would have to do it tomorrow. The next day comes and we have not received a notification of a wire transfer by 6:00PM. We go back to the hostel and different couple of workers are there. We tell them about our situation and they seem to know about us. One guy begins to talk to my partner about getting in touch with the manager, while the other guy begins to explain how they checked the room and they did not find any bed bugs. I ask if they want to see the videos and I also mentioned how their colleague had told me there were bed bugs in that room a couple weeks prior. They say the video is not necessary but that it was just weird that they couldn't find any. Yeah...they definitely booked someone in that room after doing a haphazard check for bed bugs without caring to look for proof. In the meantime, my partner has gotten on the phone with the manager and has asked why he hasn't sent the money. He says he is on "holiday and is not going to do it" until tomorrow. We go back the next day at 5:00PM. Once again asking for our refund confirmation. My partner gets back on the phone with the manager and he says it's not the end of the day yet and he will do it in two hours. We come back at 7:00PM and there is still no confirmation of the refund but the hostel worker, at this point, has apparently been told to refund in cash. He starts counting the money and when we get to the end, we notice he left the deposit out. After going back in forth, things get heated, he threatens to call the cops on me, calls us liars, and then pretends like he doesn't know what a liar is.

Stayed in a single for one night, it was okay but I woke up with bed bug bites

This was by far the WORST hostel I’ve ever stayed in. After one night of getting bitten by bed bugs and seeing them on the bed and walls, we packed up our things and requested a refund. The owner came out and quickly agreed to a full refund, which he requested banking information (swift number) and promised a refund within 24 hours. When we did not receive a refund we came back and left a note for the refund (owner was not in the office), and emailed countless times. Still no refund. Don’t stay at this foul, bed bug ridden, scam of a hostel.

DO NOT STAY HERE. We stayed in the private room and it was infested with bed bugs. If I could give 0 stars I would. We let the front desk person know and he did nothing and pretended he didn’t speak English. We sent an email and there was no response.

Worst hostel I've ever been to. They must be posting good fake reviews themselves, please don't buy it. Location is good but that's all, and doesn't make up for all the issues. We were given a private room located in a different building 5 minutes away from reception and the "amenities". The room had bed bugs (after a month I still have the skin marks the bites left me), which we reported but they did absolutely nothing. Still waiting for a refund or just a response to our numerous emails. Management is not friendly, quite rude when you complain I'd say. As for, services, 24h reception and "breakfast", meaning they just leave a box with croissants and kettle for you to make instant coffee in the morning. Very poor customer service and management. Worth paying a little bit more and get a decent room and services somewhere else.

I recently stayed at Freedom Traveler Hostel and it was a complete nightmare. To start with, there were bedbugs in our room and when we brought it up to the manager, they failed to take any sort of action to address the issue. We even requested a refund and they were completely unresponsive, telling us they would contact their boss and then disappearing off the face of the earth. Not only did we have to deal with bedbugs, but the room was in a different building from the reception area, which made it quite inconvenient to get to when needing anything from reception. Overall, I was extremely disappointed with the subpar quality of this hostel and the exorbitant price we paid for it. I would not recommend staying here if you value your sanity and money.

Let's start with the positive. The prices for a private room are comparatively cheap and we had no bed bugs. As for the price, I wasn't expecting anything outstanding. Neutral was that the private rooms are in another building, two blocks from the front desk, which is fine. It just means you have to walk 5 minutes to get the "breakfast" you paid for. The rooms are what you pay for. Not the nicest and not very clean either. Let's finish with the negative. At the beginning of our three night stay we were told we would have to change rooms after two nights, which we agreed to. We had to check out of our room by 11am and could not check back in until after 3pm. Since we were busy with our travel plans, we had to lug our precious luggage around all day, only to be told in the evening that we didn't have to change rooms at all. Honestly, communication problems happen, but please don't blame it on the guests. Also, under our bed was a used condom pack from the guests before (or even before...). By the way, breakfast includes shrink-wrapped croissants and a pot of filter coffee. For comparison, the café next door offers a cappuccino and fresh croissants for 2.50€. The happy hour just includes a 1.5l wine, which you can help yourself to.

We stayed in a private twin room. After reading other reviews after already booking I became extremely paranoid about bed bugs, however after a thorough inspection on arrival and four nights sleep we did not experience any. Our room was pretty standard for a cheap hostel, it did however have a desk. We had an ensuite which was quite dated and small (the door couldn't fully open because it hit the sink). Additionally the wifi upstairs was incredibly slow. The included breakfast was a selection of quite nice pastries (of varying levels of freshness) and coffee, however we did not see the pastries get refilled and so we're up early to ensure we could have some food in the morning. The hostel is located around 5 minutes away from Termini station, so it is easy to access if arriving by train, and is just as close to the metro. I felt the location was the best part of this hostel. I would look to spend slightly more money for some nicer accomodation the next time I'm in Rome.

Bedbugs everywhere… The employees at the reception were very very nice and sorry for the conditions. But the owner was extremely rude, insulted us and even tried to blame it on us, even though there were already many Guests before who complained about bedbugs as well. He even wanted to fight me as we said it’s their fault, not ours that there were bedbugs in our room. And everyone in our room left as well. I wouldn’t recommend this to my worst enemies…

Private room and hallway smelled bad and were not in a good state. Thought I had musquito bites during my 4 night stay, turned out to be BEDBUGS. I didn't expect a royal suite, but even basic hygiëne was not provided. Would NEVER recommend!!!

I’d say you get what you pay for but this hostel isn’t even worth the cheap prices. The biggest issue: BED BUGS. My wife and I woke up with bites and saw a bed bug crawling across my pillow. I’m used to staying in hostels and can put up with the tiny room, broken AC, and gross bathroom, but I draw the line at bed bugs. When I told the desk attendant that we would be leaving early and wanted a full refund, he said “bed bugs happen in hostels, everyone knows this,” and would only offer a partial refund. If you’d like to stay in a place where bed bugs are considered normal, this is the spot for you. I can recommend a great local laundromat that will dry all the clothes in your luggage on high heat, no questions asked.

We just stayed at the freedom traveller for our first 2 nights in Rome, it was a private room. The bed is definitely covered in bed bugs because we are covered in them. Now we have to deal with carrying bed bugs for the rest of our trip until we go home.

Good central location, however it was INFESTED WITH BED BUGS. My friend got really badly bitten all over her body and spotted the bugs in the beds. Notified the staff there and they didn’t appear to do anything about it, even keeping the room open which the bed bugs were in. Staff tried to blame it on us and tried to justify the bed bugs by saying this is what you pay for with a hostel. Hostels are cheap because they have shared facilities and basic beds, not because of a bed bug risk. If this was a hotel it would have shut down by now. Shame because the location is great and the free wine and snacks is a nice gesture.

Honestly after reading the reviews I expected much worst. I was very paranoid about bed bugs so when I got there I checked the beds and the mattress with the light on my phone very well and I didn't find anything, the sheets seemed clean and under them also. The room was ok after all I stayed in an 6 beds shared bedroom for 1 night. You have to bring your own padlock. The kitchen is very gross, I wouldn't recommend using it. The room was on second floor and there were 2 or 3 bathroom, they were okayish, maybe like a public bathroom, not better. The hotel is easy to locate using Google maps, there is a small sign on the building. There is complementary breakfast from 8-10, it is croissants and coffee or tea. The croissants are good, the coffee is extra watery.

Negative: BEDBUGS, towels not washed, rooms on a different street than the reception, different items didn‘t work (hair dryer, lamp, tv…), kitchen really filthy and the advertised „free wine and snacks“ was not available. The one bed/matress was rather worn out and uncomfortable, the breakfast ist luke warm watery coffee and a sweet croissant. The person at the reception wasn‘t really interested in customer service or beeing friendly. Positive: close to Termini Station, inexpensive, the night concierge was really friendly, nice restaurants nearby. Won‘t come again.

COVERED IN BED BUG BITES!!! Tried to message the hostel to change the dates for our arrival and never heard from them. Showed up on the original night we had booked to find out there was no room available that night but the message of the change had never gotten to us which may or may not have been at the fault of the business. They offered to pay our night elsewhere. I had a couple bite marks on the third day but thought maybe it was a mosquito until a bed bug ran towards my boyfriend on the fourth morning before we checked out of the room. We informed the front desk who ensured they would "call the technician". Offered no compensation or apologies for the lack of consideration for health and safety.

Gross! My boyfriend and I booked 6 nights in that hostels and after arriving in our room, we instantly regretted it. We arrived late at night, and the first thing we checked was the bathroom. It was all flowded, the floor drain was inexistent, so it was constantly wet, after using the shower. There were no towels, nor bathroom products (shampoo and all) available. What was even worse, was the room itself. Truly disgusting. The floor wasn't cleaned in ages, no duvet cover for the blankets (the blanket didn't seem washed recently), and the worst of all : bed bugs break out in the beds! We were all covered in bed bug bites over our bodies, after just one night there! Imagine now, staying there for 6 nights... A nightmare. We couldn't wait to leave that bloody hostel. We didn't expect a luxuous place to stay in, but that hostel didn't even have the basic requirements such place is asked to have. This place should be shutdown !!! Worse than sleeping on the bare ground outside the hostel itself.

Terrible terrible case of bed bugs out break. Sever reaction, traumatic experience with management making light of the situation. Place should be sued and shut down.

Posting on behalf of my other roommate that stayed with me.. this was the worst hostel experience we've been through. Extremely traumatic bed bugs experience with management ignoring and making light of the situation. One friend had to visit the dermatologist out of pocket costing her 50EUR. This place should be shutdown.

Traumatic experience, do not visit. Extremely terrible case of bed bug outbreak in my room with two other people. Over 30 bites on my body. This place should be shut down. Broken toilet and AC, overall poor cleaning of toilet. No covid rules was followed. Management does not take responsibility over the bed bugs making light of the situation.. we even had a recording of the bed bugs but nothing was done.. you'll regret going.

!! BEDBUGS / PUNAISES DE LIT!! Nous avions réservé une chambre privée, celle-ci ne se trouvait pas dans l'auberge mais dans un autre bâtiment. Nous devions donc marcher quelques minutes pour accéder à la cuisine qui était très sale. Nous avons également trouvé des PUNAISES DE LIT dans notre chambre, et avons donc été changées de chambre 2 fois (3 chambres en 2 nuits ! Et les punaises ont dû se promener dans toute l'auberge de ce fait). Le personnel n'a fait aucun geste commercial pour nous dédommager, et a fait preuve de mauvaise fois en prétextant que nous avions ramené les punaises, alors qu'elles étaient bien installées dans les plinthes et le matelas depuis quelques temps je pense. Certains membres du personnel semblaient trouver la situation amusante. Auberge à fuir !!!

I wish I could give it a zero star. Me and my friends stayed here for 2 nights and our experience was awful. Unclean bathroom with flush system not working properly, bed bugs, AC not working, breakfast including just a small cup of coffee (coffee machine barely working) and a small bread piece. Overall, totally unhappy with their service.

Where do I even begin... The staff is very rude and doesn't listen when you tell them your situation, there are rats, mouses, fleas and bedbugs, it doesn't only smell like mould but it can be seen on the walls as well, the 'free' wine tastes like piss and it wouldn't surprise me if you end up in a hospital from drinking it... Too bad you can't give zero stars!

BED BUGS !! My review can be summarized in one word: 'bedbugs'. I'm allergic and I know how bedbugs bites look like. I got this allergic reaction to it and had to go to the hospital and then to buy medicine and creams and wash all my stuff. Now two weeks after I realized that I brought them with me and I was just bitten again this night. I have to pay 300 euros to a professional to come to intervene in my home. I also don´t recommend you to book thorugh #hostelworld they have a bad customer service and they don´t care.. Until now I spent almost a thousand of euros
