One of the worst hostels I’ve ever stayed in. Rooms smelled and weren’t clean at all, rude staff (not the volunteers who were so lovely which was a shame), and didn’t feel much of a vibe.
In 2years traveling I never wrote a bad review, but this time I have to. I booked a private room, it was not cheap at all, 6500 Rs for an extremely basic and dirty room. I am sorry to say but the room was really in horrible condition, it stank, was not clean at all and the beds were so uncomfortable … to know that for that price you can get a super good room in a guesthouse. If it was cheaper it would be ok, but I feel ripped off. The hostel itself is also just quite dirty. staff is lovely tho...
Super nice staff but really poorly equipped rooms. We checked into Rockstel because the review was so good, but we can't confirm the 9 stars. Also the location was quite far from the beach. Cannot recommend staying there.
every pick me driver I had got lost on the way to the hostel as it is very hidden, the toilets were some of the worst I've come across in hostels with the downstairs one actually having no door, the bedroom had a crazy amount of mosquitos and no curtains / mosquito nets we all left with loads of bites, they also ran out of water as no one filled up the filters? the bunk beds were also pretty lethal with no guard, the two very nice volunteers help the rating, ultimately there's better options
I was surprised by how high the ratings were once I arrived, the location is not great and the private room had a lot of ants and insects and didn’t smell great. The volunteers were lovely and people were nice!

Unfortunately, I think I was unlucky as not many people were staying here at the time so there wasn’t much of an atmosphere! I had booked for two nights but I left early as I didn’t feel comfortable (was not charged for the second night which was nice of the hostel) - the facilities are worn, and the whole place felt quite dirty, especially the bathroom. I’ve paid similar for much nicer places. The location is also not ideal, it’s a 30+ min walk to anywhere you’d want to go.
Los espacios están bastante sucios. Hay family dinner por las noches y la comida está bien buena. Cuando estuve había varios voluntarios, lo que ofrece un poco más de ambiente al hostal, pero hay bastante poco la verdad.
The spaces are pretty dirty. there is a family dinner in the evenings and the food is quite good. when i was there were several volunteers, which gives a little more atmosphere to the hostel, but there is quite little truth.
Leider meine schlechteste Unterkunft in 3 Wochen Reise durch Sri Lanka. Schlafzimmer waren nicht wirklich sauber, die Bettlaken hatten undefinierbare Flecken und auch das Bad hätte deutlich sauberer sein können. Vom Vibe war es recht anonym, wenngleich das Personal sehr nett und hilfsbereit war.
Unfortunately my worst accommodation in 3 weeks trip through Sri Lanka. bedrooms were not really clean, the bed sheets had indefinable stains and even the bathroom could have been much cleaner. the vibe was quite anonymous, although the staff was very nice and helpful.
it is fine. close to the train and bus, far away from the beach. vibe was alright but there were more volunteers than guests, so even that they were really very friendly it's different to travellers. I would go there again but not for the price (stayed after two nights in another 9,x hostel for 1/3-1/2 less)

Ben hier voor 3 nachten gebleven. de voorzieningen zijn niets bijzonders, maar wel helemaal prima. Ik vond vooral de sfeer erg prettig. Rockstel heeft een relaxte sfeer. De vrijwilligers zijn top en vaak wordt per dag een beetje gekeken waar men zin in heeft om te doen. kan zijn aan het einde van de dag naar het strand, gezamenlijk uiteten of dergelijk. Geen enkele druk om aan te sluiten en je kunt op elk moment gezellig aansluiten dus er is geen haast als je eerst nnog andere plannen hebt.
I stayed here for 3 nights. the facilities are nothing special, but quite fine. I especially found the atmosphere very nice. Rockstel has a relaxed atmosphere. The volunteers are top notch and often there is a little bit of a look at what people are keen to do every day. it can be at the end of the day to the beach, a joint outing or something like that. no pressure to join and you can join anytime so there is no rush if you have no other plans.

we absolutely loved our stay here we even extended it because of how much we loved the social atmosphere. we also had an amzing family dinner which was delicious. we found The outside areas great for chatting and the kitchen had everything you would need, we will definitely stay again!
Would give this place 1,000,000 stars if it were possible. Came for 2 nights stayed for 5, honestly didn’t wanna leave. The staff are some of the coolest people and the vibe is elite. Felt like home
Still recovering from the Monday night party lol. Honestly, I’ve never seen a hostel party this packed on a Monday. Met so many travellers, had way too many drinks, and the music was epic. If you stay here, do NOT miss the I Hate Mondays event. 10/10 vibe. Thanks to Adam & Rajiv brothers for everything xoxo
The location is absolutely incredible, and you can even rent bikes directly there, which makes everything so easy and enjoyable. The host is unbelievably kind and helpful. I accidentally left something on the bus, and I was sooo grateful that it was sent back to me right away. I had such a lovely experience and would definitely recommend staying here!
Rockstel Towers was the perfect home for a week. As I was in Unawatuna for a while diving I was super happy to find a hostel that was the perfect balance of fun and peace. The staff are all so kind and loving, there is a nice range of evening activities or the week to keep a nice pace to allow everyone to feel like there is an evening they want to do. I even returned for a night in my way back up the coast to say hello and get a good nights rest before flying 😂 Couldn’t recommend more.

Having stayed in over 200 hostels over the years, I can say with rather some confidence that this place is unique. It's situated outside the mayhem of the touristic Unawatuna town center and has a fantastic vibe to it. The volunteers are as diverse as they are eclectic and the place just buzzes with social energy. I'll be back.

En una palabra, Familia Me hicieron sentir como en casa desde el minuto uno, los hermanos Adam, al mando de todo, son los hermanos que sentí que tenia. Comodidad, convivencia y un hostal especial en medio de un sitio especial. Llegué como un mochilero solitario y me voy con el corazon mucho mas lleno. Simplemente gracias. In a word, Family made me feel at home from the first minute, the Adam brothers, in charge of everything, are the brothers I felt I had. Comfort, coexistence and a special hostel in the middle of a special place. I arrived as a lone backpacker and leave with a heart much more full.

I had a great stay at this hostel. The atmosphere was very welcoming, and all the volunteers were kind, helpful, and friendly. You can really feel the positive energy in the place The owner, Adem, is extremely warm-hearted and professional. He truly cares about his guests and runs the hostel with passion and attention to detail. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and well organized, with very good air conditioning. Clean, friendly, and a really good vibe. Easy to meet people and chill. Would stay again. Don’t forget to play with lovely dogs doobie and blackie
Great place in a quiet area, surrounded with a small jungle with lots of animals around (amazing birds sounds!), and yet walkable distance to the town and all the main attractions. Staff is very helpful and social, but you might also easily find a place to just be on your own. Really enjoyed my stay and will come back for sure :)

Pros: - Volunteers are really friendly - Quite social in the evenings - Aircon is strong Cons: - Ants and Mosquitos everywhere - Nothing in the kitchen works, toaster, cooker, kettle… and even if it did, I don’t think I would want to use it as the utensils and surfaces are dirty - Only 2 shared shower/toilers for the whole hostel - Very unclean - The place is really run down and looks nothing like the pictures online - Location isn’t great, looking at a 20 minute walk to the nearest beach
The hostel is okay. WiFi didn’t work well. Some areas were dirty, but for one night stay for example it’s enough
