Port Douglas Backpackers Youth Hostel

We did not enjoy our stay here. The bathrooms were dirty and smelt of urine, and kitchen was not clean or well kept. The staff were not overly helpful, and there seemed to be lots of long term guests which meant it was not a welcoming environment. If you’re young and looking for a party then this is the place for you but otherwise wouldn’t recommend. The location was great though, with a short 10 min walk to the beach and free parking right outside.

Worst hostel I’ve stayed in. They were throwing a pool party when I arrived and the music was blasting extremely loud when I was trying to sleep. The room had no air conditioning and was extremely hot to sleep in. There was also a notice on my bedroom door about a dangerous mould odour which would be cleaned up soon. Would not recommend.

Great location. The kitchen was absolutely disgusting! The food cupboards were full of fruit flies, looked like they had not been cleaned out in months. The vault fridge was dirty, plates of food in there, again looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in months. The both kitchens were dirty and not great. Had everything you needed but just dirty! The cleanest part was the showers! A lot of long stayers, not a very welcoming atmosphere. Also no plug sockets by the beds - really not ideal!

The toilets were quite dirty and there was a distinct spell of urine on the floor. The general feel of the hostel felt a bit old and just a bit run down. The AC in the rooms was very good though. No curtains was disappointing and made it difficult to feel relaxed in a room with 7 other strangers.

With the exception of the toilets and showers, this hotel was really dirty. The kitchen was filthy, the floors were dusty and even the area around the pool was so dirty it made sitting around it unpleasant. I know it was cheap, but surely that should mean it’s basic, not unclean. Other than that, the staff were friendly but there was no atmosphere whatsoever. Lots of long term guests. Location was very good though.

Probably my worst experience in a hostel. The staff double booked the room. Removed things from beds because they couldnt figure out the numbers. Chose to barge in at 1.40am to try to resolve why there were 7 people in a 6 bed room despite telling me they double booked things earlier in the night. Absolute disgrace. Add that to the loud, obnoxious people in the room that left a mess that you could barely get around. What a s*** show

Pros: location, free street parking, has a small gym, showers were awesome, comfy bed Cons: the 2 kitchens were disgusting, wifi was terrible and mostly only long term guests (hard to make friends as a solo traveler)

It's a big hostel, the vibe reflects that. It's not a party hostel per say but I also wouldn't say it's quiet. The beds were fine; equipment, e.g., gym equipment and pool chairs was quite run down. I feel like it was pretty dirty overall. Bearable, but not nice. Especially the kitchens were pretty nasty, in a big hostel like this its just not enough to tell everyone to clean up after themselves. The staff was friendly and helpful though, and the location was good.

Nice, social hostel in the centre of Port Douglas. Only complaints would be the kitchen- very small, lots of dirty dishes in the sink & no clean tea towels to dry your washing up. Also most of the staff were lovely but there was one woman on reception who was pretty unfriendly. I was quite surprised by this as this is rare in Australia. Overall I really enjoyed my stay so thank you!

The basic structure of the hostel is quite nice and has a lot of potential. However, the facility is rather run-down — everything smells and looks a bit dirty. Many 'work and travelers' stay there, which makes the place feel messy. In the rooms, these guests tend to spread out extensively, and it seems like the staff doesn’t pay attention to ensuring that guests staying only one or two nights still have enough space. Upon check-out, guests are required to remove their own sheets, and at that...

I wish I liked it more, unfortunately many long-term backpackers and all from the same countries. They didn't really bother to include anyone and only spoke French or Spanish...I liked the layout of the hostel though, many common areas and they tried to be inclusive with a wa group chat and events such as free dinners

It’s in a great area of town where everything is walking distance. The vibe was definitely popping so if you want to meet people, there were all sorts of people busy in the common rooms

Good hostel but not very social. Most people staying are there doing regional work

Si estás pensando en un lugar en el que sentirte como en casa y disfrutar del buen ambiente este es sin duda tu sitio! Alba y Anna en recepción son un amor siempre dispuestas a ayudarte y a darte consejos sobre la zona y alrededores. Y qué decir del ambiente… es increíble. Si buscas conocer gente de todos los lugares con una mezcla hermosa de culturas lo encontrarás aquí! Las instalaciones son geniales con la piscina y la zona de la tv para relajarte y ver alguna peli. ¡BPD es genial!

Really nice hostel, one of the best I have been in. Near the beach and the main road, staff very friendly and available, large space to store personal food, possibility of buying 10$meals, clean rooms with personal lockers, sofa and tv area, nice smoking area outside ;) Strongly suggested

This hostel is such good value for money compared to others on the East coast. Everyone was very friendly and it had a lovely chilled vibe. Great location. The room was a bit smelly but overall amazing hostel

Stayed in a private room. Was huge, ensuite bathroom, aircon, towels and soaps provided. Plenty of free street parking outside. Both kitchens were pretty cramped and not the cleanest, but it was pretty busy to be fair. Nice vibe, bar was open and pool was big. Price is defo too high but was the cheapest private room in port Douglas so I guess the price was in keeping with the area.
