Official advisories for the Republic of the Congo remain above normal travel advice as of 2026-05-15, with the strongest notices telling travelers to avoid all travel in some listed areas and softer notices calling for caution elsewhere because of crime, armed groups, border insecurity, rebel activity, and cholera.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid all travel in areas covered by the highest official warning level. The clearest named area is within 50 km of the Republic of Congo-Central African Republic border in Likouala Region, where one official advisory says to avoid all travel and another says to avoid non-essential travel because of criminal gangs and armed militias.

Avoid non-essential travel to Pool Department outside Brazzaville. Official notes cite occasional military operations against rebel militias, armed banditry, and rebel activity.

Use heightened caution in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. Canada excludes Brazzaville from the Pool Department avoid-non-essential-travel warning. French and Italian notes place Brazzaville above baseline caution. Italian notes list Pointe-Noire as an area requiring particular caution because of security risks. The source material supports a caution claim for Pointe-Noire.

Check official pages before booking, before departure, and before any intercity or border-area movement. These source checks are dated 2026-05-14; the latest listed update is Canada on 2026-05-04.

What Changes The Trip

Border movement is the hard constraint. The UK’s 2025-12-10 notice advises against all travel within 50 km of the Republic of Congo-Central African Republic border in Likouala Region. Canada’s 2026-05-04 notice gives the same 50 km border area an avoid-non-essential-travel warning because of criminal gangs and armed militias.

Pool Department needs its own route check. Canada says to avoid non-essential travel there, except Brazzaville, because of occasional military operations against rebel militias. New Zealand’s 2024-11-29 page also names Pool Department for armed banditry and rebel activity.

Brazzaville has a lower warning level than Pool Department outside the capital, according to Canada’s carve-out. It still appears in French and Italian elevated-caution notes, with Italy naming crime as the reason.

Pointe-Noire is a caution area in the Italian advisory because of security risks. Check current local conditions, transport plans, and accommodation location. Treat the official instruction as caution-level guidance.

Cholera is part of the current advisory picture. France has an active “Dernières minutes” update titled “Épidémie de choléra,” and Italy’s 2026-02-23 notes mark the Republic of the Congo for cholera-related health caution. Follow local health instructions and check whether your route or accommodation area is affected before moving.

Source Differences Worth Noticing

Japan’s 2025-04-25 advisory includes both a Level 3 “do not travel” label and a Level 1 “exercise caution” label for listed areas. The visible source summary does not specify the exact subareas behind each label, so verify Japan’s official page if that advisory applies to your passport or route.

France’s 2026-04-15 security map uses orange and yellow zones. The named higher-risk areas include the northern border with the Central African Republic, southern borders with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cabinda, other neighboring borders, the Bouenza-Pool border area, and Brazzaville.

Ireland’s 2025-07-16 page rates Congo as “High Degree of Caution.” Canada’s countrywide page says to exercise a high degree of caution because of crime and insecurity in neighboring countries, with stronger warnings for Pool Department and the Central African Republic border area.
