The dorm had no air conditioning. It was the worst night of my trip in Australia because of the heat in the room. There were two fans, one of which didn’t work. The lights didn’t work either. There were belongings everywhere, impossible to store your things properly, there’s just no space. The kitchen is tiny: 8 stovetops for the entire hostel… 3 showers and 2 toilets for the whole floor. Nothing was right. I don’t understand how this hostel managed to get more than 9 stars on Hostelwo...
How is this thing here available to rent? this has been an awful experience. I only stayed one night and had to go somewhere else to spend the rest of my trip. The rooms were dirty and the facilities were too small for the huge amount of people staying there. The kitchen is like literally for 5 people, so sometimes you dont even have space to have a coffee. The staff leaves AFTER 6.30 PM!!! YES!!! so everyone, literally, everyone can be invited and enter the place after that.
There were rats on the kitchen floor and in my room. I had to leave at 11pm to find other room, because the rats were running in my room floor. The worst part was finding out that they had been there for days and no one did anything, that is, I slept for 3 days in a room that had rats and even though I went to the reception, no one did anything, they simply apologized and said they would report it to the manager. Definitely I do not recommend. It's not worth paying cheap and sleeping with rats.
During my three-week stay at the hostel, I observed numerous instances where individuals were asked to vacate the premises by the receptionist, Ashley, for seemingly trivial reasons. Typically, she would notify them in the morning, instructing them to promptly pack their belongings and depart from the hostel. It’s the worst I’ve ever stayed in I’m so annoyed Wi-Fi was so slow and bad there basically was no Wi-Fi, absolutely freezing, kitchen tiny, no privacy curtains i was in a single bed in the middle of the room, showers are cold, bad location 15 min walk to closest shop and tiny lockers that couldn’t fit any bags There’s also only 2 washing machines and driers and they use them for the bed linen so you can’t really use them. A lot of older people and the hostel is way too strict.
Overall the stay was okay, nothing terrible to report. The bathrooms were clean, and the kitchen wasn’t too bad although a bit small. It was quite difficult to make food at normal dinner time due to the number of people doing the same. The bedroom floor space was hoovered daily, but you could tell it hadn’t been deep cleaned in a long time. We were really hoping to make friends and I think we just didn’t get lucky (not hostels fault). People didn’t seem to want to socialise in my room.
Location and staff couldn’t be faulted. If your looking for a sociable hostel this isn’t the one for you… lots of residents living there so kept themselves to themselves, also not many activities so keep that in mind if your a solo traveller
Okay-ish place to stay at, especially since the Location is Great to explore the City. But besides that the staff seemed rude and was quiet condescending towards me, the atmosphere wasnt great either and there is very little communal space to Hang out.
Lot of delivery food drivers staying here, but a good population of travelers too. I sadly couldn’t stay long due to an emergency and they forgave of the remaining nights’ cost which was really kind of them.

Kind staff and practical location stood out as strengths, but the room itself was unfortunately lacking. There were only ~8 small curtains for a room of 6 beds (each one needing around 4 curtains to have full privacy), and the ones that were there barely hung on. There were also only 4 lockers in a 6 person room, making it very annoying for 2 people needing to go into the public corridor to access their belongings.
Great location, right next to a lot of tram stops and a quick walk to Fitzroy or the CBD. Bed was comfortable (appreciated the curtains), good security, and very friendly staff! I injured my back right before my visit and they were super accommodating to switch me to a lower bunk in a more accessible room. I think the upper floors were recently renovated, but the ground floor could use some TLC. The carpets could use a deep clean and it would be nice if the bathrooms were cleaned more often.
Excellent hostel overall. Kind and professional (volunteer) staff. Ideally located between CBD and Fitzroy/Collingwood. Gorgeous and spacious mansion. Clean, comfortable, great courtyard, nice kitchen common room, the tv room… everything is right I’d go back whenever back to Melbourne
Nice and friendly hostel
Hostel was oke. Dichtbij de tram en centrum. Het was een oud gebouw en de kamers heel klein en benauwd. Weinig plek om je spullen fijn op te bergen. Beneden was een plek waar je chill kon relaxen. Keuken was wat aan de kleine kant maar prima te doen
Hostel was okay. Near the tram and the center. It was an old building and the rooms very small and narrow. Little room to store your nice things. Below was a place where you could chill and relax. Kitchen was a little bit on the small side but fine to do.

Great hostel in an ideal location. The kitchen is really well facilitated. The rooms were very messy with people leaving their things all over the place but that’s not the hostel’s fault.
One of the nicer hostels I’ve stayed in. There are a lot of long-term or older people so it’s not the best for solo backpackers, however I chose this for some quiet nights and it was perfect. The bathrooms and kitchen are clean and the staff are lovely.
Lovely hostel, great staff, really clean. A lot of long-term people staying which meant it was chilled out and not noisy at night - perfect if you want to sleep but perhaps not if you need a social environment as a backpacker.

Good location just out of the CBD. Lots of long term stays, but everyone was always making conversation and saying hi. Staff were really friendly, especially Ashley! Kitchen a bit on the small side, but good fridge space and common areas. Social events that aren’t focused on partying. Bunk beds a bit rickety and quite a few bed curtains seem to be missing - also a bit annoying to have to open the bottom curtain to climb up/down the ladder. But beds otherwise comfy and you get 2 pillows!

Absolutely loved staying at The Mansion, not sure how it would be in summer when is busier but I felt so welcomed by the awesome human at reception and the building is beautiful, spacious and full of character. There is a lot of focus on respect for others so I was able to sleep really well and also work in the dedicated desks area. the kitchen is nice although at times small but everything is well organised. bathroom were clean but I it always depends on the guest. Very central and easy!
Best hostel so far in Australia- been here 8 weeks and done NT, WA, the red centre, QLD. Just perfect and hoping remaining places in Sydney and Tassie as good.

Friendly staff, quiet dorms, and the location was very convenient to trendy neighborhoods for cafes, shopping, and nightlife. The social atmosphere was very odd. Most of the guests were on their working holiday visa when I was there and they used the hostel for long term stay. Very cliquey and introverted crowd, sometimes standoffish. I would recommend this hostel if you just want a quiet place to work and sleep. There are better options out there if you’re on holiday and looking to make frien...
