Green Tortoise Hostel

The bathroom next to my room had visible mold around the ceiling where it meets the wall, a lot of it. I was ill from it with extreme headaches and inflammation. This is a health hazard. When I complained on my third night, the mold was wiped off but not completely as it was in the drywall. The staff offered to move my room on my last night, and when I requested I was refunded for two nights, but was still out cost of one night plus the booking fee. Don't recommend for mold sensitive people.

The staff was very unwelcoming and not helpful. Additionally, none of the advertised social activities run as advertised nor planned, which left many of us confused and disappointed. For a social hostel, it was very not-social. Some of the volunteers were nice though. If you are just looking to share a very basic accommodation, a bed, with nothing else, you won't be much disappointed.

Convenient location. Room was extremely loud. Lots of noise from the street and the fan for the room is mounted on the window directly next to the bed. I ended up leaving during the night as I wasn’t able to sleep with all of the noise.

Very poor atmosphere.

Room smelled horrible like an old hotel room with sweat and p***, very noisy as well. Quite unsanitary, I preferred to leave and than to sleep there

Beware of the "annex." I am an avid hostel-goer, and I booked a private room in this hostel, thinking it would be similar to my previous experiences - getting access to the common areas that make a hostel worth it, while still maintaining some privacy to travel with my partner. However, when we arrived at Green Tortoise, we were asked if we had received notification that we would be placed in the "annex." The “luxury private room” was a small room with just a window facing to a back street. No courtsins to allow me to sleep after sunrise. The fact of making the host to clean the room, taking all the bedclothes etc when leaving is another aspect I disliked.

Okay so this is a legitimate party hostel so prepare for that if you’re staying here. There is no peace and there’s a blaring club in front of it. This works more like a human luggage storage than anything. Cool decor, but everything else could be better.

This was my first time staying in a US hostel, but have stayed in many across Europe. That being said, I think my expectations were inherently high. No elevator - but that was manageable. The common space and kitchen were nice. The rooms were really dated and the carpet made them seem really gross. For bathrooms, a couple were nice but others were not great. If they made updates and renovations I think this could be a great hostel. I learned my lesson and next will opt for a hotel.

Wasn't as expected from all the good reviews. Room was loud, bedsheets were stained and full of hair that wasn't my own. Couldn't sleep at all due to excessive street noise and doors slamming. Wouldn't come again.

outstanding common areas nice front desk staff even let me use hot tub at 2am briefly as I had a very late arrival. Quiet and clean

Possibly one of the best if not the best hostel I have stayed at. Definitely the hostel to stay at. when I visit San Francisco again, I'm definitely rebooking.

Amazing amazing amazing! Huge, gorgeous common area they call "ballroom" with a piano, guitar, and drum & pool table and foos ball table and so many couches & tables always available. High ceiling w/ disco ball & a video projection. This is where breakfast is served, live music occasionally, & its attached to the kitchen. Bathroom with neon glow hallway. Tiny room for phone call w/ walls lined w/ leaves. Bicycle storage room! A quiet room for desks for working. Events different each night.

Perfect, really close to perfect spots

Best hostel I’ve ever stayed at, common areas are great for work and connection, having a massive kitchen ment many people could cook at once without getting in anyone’s way, rooms were great and curtains are amazing for extra privacy, I loved the seperate bathrooms and the staff were all super friendly! Vibes were cozy, comfy and welcoming 10/10 stay

Top Lage, freundliche und hilfsbereite Angestellte, tolles Frühstück, ausreichend und saubere Bäder und alles bestens organisiert und durchdacht und das zu einem fairen Preis. Ich würde definitiv wiederkommen und kann einen Aufenthalt dort nur empfehlen.

they could do a lot better for what they charge. I booked one of their private rooms and the bathroom was really not in goo shape

Amazing hostel! As a solo female traveler, safety is my top priority. The hostel has secure doors and makes sure all the guests feel safe. It was also really clean and everyone was so friendly and helpful on recommending things to do. Would definitely stay again

I stayed few nights after visiting family in the greater Bay Area, I wanted to stay in the city to check out some live music and meet some new folks. I really liked the beds and bedding, very comfortable and private, and solid frames. I was never roused by my bunk mate moving around, as can happen with the metal frame beds at other hostels. The showers were newly renovated, very clean and smelled fine. The kitchen we good, dishwashing set up was very clear, and the ballroom was a great to hang

What an amazing place. Return guest at GT and they always deliver. Rooms are clean, staff is friendly and always helpful. The ballroom is a great communal space to socialize or work on a laptop (they have an office share space too if more quiet is needed!). This time I used the nearby North Beach Garage with clearance for a VW bus! Very safe and secure. Also they have a full kitchen to cook full meal or store leftovers from the countless restaurants in China Town and Little Italy! Will be back!

The best hostel I've stayed in, hands down. I LOVED the whimsy and fun that the environment fostered and encouraged. Made some really cool friends and slept like a baby.
