Very basic. Big space for your bed, but you also have to put all your stuff here.
The ratings seem too high. The facilities were average; toilets need improvement, kitchen and common space was older. The shared outdoor space was nice but not a place to hang out when it’s raining. Had a private room with a shared bath that was near the front and it was pretty loud when people walked past. I have also stayed at the Haka in Taupo and I would recommend staying there if you have the choice.
Do not recommend this hostel unless you’re looking for a party. It was very loud. People in the dorms did not mute their phones or use headsets. Litter and cups full of cigarette butts we’re throughout the courtyard. The bathrooms and kitchen were disgusting - a toilet bowl was dirty for three days and the fridge, stuffed with bags and open food items, smelled terrible. The only window in a 6-person dorm was behind a screen and there was no fan.

I’m glad I was only here for one night. I was in a pod in the female only dorm. The concept of the pod is good but mine wasn’t particularly clean, and there were no spare blankets or pillows available which was a problem as the room was absolutely freezing! I was sleeping in my thermals. There is also nowhere secure to store valuables, and no room for luggage. The bathroom door didn’t close properly let alone lock, and the shower drain was clogged.
This is not a good hostel. Security is a huge issue, dorm doors are left wide open during the day and dorm mates do not lock doors at night. No lockers to lock up a rucksack. Toilets are in a different block so it means having to go outside to use toilet/shower. Not enough toilets/showers. Not very social. Staff are not very welcoming and seemed like they didn’t want to be there. The only positive is it’s in a good location
Worst experience ever. Cleaning is something rare. I cannot count how many hairs (not mine) were found in my bedding on the first day. Bathrooms are very dirty (specially on Sunday). The common area is around bedrooms so you need to deal with people having fun til late. I did not understood the good review until I noticed the target in mainly in their twenties, in first oversee trip. So, everything looks good to them. If you need a little more, I do not recommend.
The capsule itself is fine, but there is absolutely no security. The locker is extremely small and the dorm door is left open all the time, which doesn’t feel safe at all. The receptionist was quite dismissive and not welcoming. I wouldn’t recommend asking for any travel or sightseeing advice as she seemed completely uninterested in helping. Overall, I would not recommend this place.
As others said, the kitchen is very (!) messy and dirty. The rooms and pods are good, tho it can get very hot at times.

Es war wirklich toll! Meiner Meinung nach das beste Hostel auf der Nordinsel Neuseelands. Die Schlafplätze sind sehr gemütlich und es gibt dort alles, was man braucht: eine große Küche mit mehreren Herden, ein Essbereich, der sehr gemütlich dekoriert ist und ein Aufenthaltsraum mit Fernseher und Sofas, um sich einen schönen, entspannten Filmabend zu machen. It was really great! in my opinion the best hostel on the North Island of New Zealand. the bedrooms are very cozy and there is everything you need: a large kitchen with several herds, a dining area that is very comfortably decorated and a living room with TV and sofas to make a nice, relaxed movie night. besides there is almost every day a special activity to look forward to, be it a pancake morning or a movie night.
Across the whole country, I enjoyed Finlay‘s the most - I loved the open and social atmosphere there, although I came during offseason. They helped me out in any case of issue and organised some events - definitely a good place to meet people and have your private space whenever needed.
Schönes Hostel mit großer Küche und gemütlichem Wohnzimmer. Die Abendprogramme sind eine süße Idee und mein Einzelzimmer war sehr bequem. Würde wieder dort übernachten!
Nice hostel with a large kitchen and a cozy living room. the evening programs are a sweet idea and my single room was very comfortable. would stay there again!
Finlay Jacks is a great hostel with a chill vibe. Amazing location! The bathrooms were very clean and well equipped. The common areas a welcoming, cosy, and spacious. The only issue I had was the mattress was incredibly uncomfortable and worn. The springs made for a very uncomfortable night.

The beds are awesome, you have a lot of privacy. Really good social areas. One of the best hostels I’ve ever stayed at.
Super cozy, spacious sleeping area, nice outdoor space to chill and connect and provided activities from the hostel. Can only recommend to stay for a few days!
Such a nice hostel! As a backpacker this definitely felt like an upgrade from a lot of the hostels I am used to. Cannot recommend enough!! Comfy beds, amazing facilities, friendly staff etc (even a piano!)

Really nice hostel. Very chilled vibe and good facilities. About a 10 min walk from the lake but still a good location. Staff were helpful and friendly, kitchen and bathrooms were clean and nice.

Fantastic hostel to spend a couple days! The pods were great privacy and beds and pillows were super comfy. They have little events every day. They were small events but still fun. The kitchen is pretty big and they keep it fairly clean. The shower water pressure is great too!
