The Siem Reap Chilled Backpacker

I landed late night in Siem Reap after a long journey and had booked a stay at Siem Reap Chilled Backpackers expecting at least a clean bed and a peaceful sleep before my early morning plans. Unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the worst hostel experiences I’ve ever had. The hostel room was completely unhygienic. The beds had bedbugs, which made it impossible to sleep comfortably. Basic amenities were also missing — no towel was provided, there was no soap or shampoo in the bathroom, and even the hot water was not working. What made the experience even worse was that one person in the room was vomiting the entire night. The smell and situation were absolutely disgusting, and the staff did nothing to manage it or help the other guests. I could not sleep the whole night and ended up changing my hotel the very next morning despite losing my booking money. I usually understand that budget hostels may not be luxurious, but hygiene and basic comfort are the minimum expectations. Sadly, this place failed badly in that aspect. Overall, a terrible experience and definitely not a place I would recommend to anyone visiting Siem Reap.

Dull and dreary. Bed bugs in the dorms. Dirty bathrooms.

The beds are not as pristine as the photos show and the dorms are also quite dark. My bed had bed bugs. The bathroom locks are very tight to open/close.

I got bed bugs here. At least the morning staff was helpful but still denying that this every occured in the hostel. Please clean or change the mattresses, sometimes is not the fault of the hostel but the hostel have the responsibility to do a check up and pest control once in a while

General facilities were good, but when we complained about bed bugs the staff were rude and unhelpful. We asked to change rooms to avoid any more bites, but we were told to pay extra to do so and had no apology.

Pros 1. Location is convenient to walk to pub street (25 minute walk). 2. Pool 3. A/C in room (if it works) 4. Food place by pool. Expensive compared to across street but convenient. Cons 1. Restroom sewer/drainage was backed up in our room for several days. Was told it was like that for the past month. Several of us moved into other rooms, unfortunately after a night of rotten smell. 2. New room had limited working A/C. 3. Bed bugs which resulted me to go see doctor and pharmacy racking up $40 bill. 4. Staff aren’t as friendly or helpful. Don’t blame them, since work many hours, and only 2 people all day. 5. Shower knob is missing so can’t use. Have to wait until person gets out of working shower.
