YMCA Hostel

Despite great cleaning efforts from the hostel staff some guests really don't know how to keep common spaces tidy after use. Mainly the bathrooms and sometimes kitchen. No fault but the guests. Rent can be pretty high despite long term rates.the process of looking into that seemed hard to get straightforward answers about at times. 1st room had bed bugs so I was grateful to change rooms. But laundry services were limited from repairs so it was hard to transition into a clean space again while working and adhering to quiet hours/ while sharing laundry facilities with housekeeping. Pro tip-Close windows for birds when not in room!

It’s really not that clean and quite uncomfortable staying there. I also had a big bedbug problem had in my room so I had to change rooms to have a clean bed. The washing facilities are old and not clean either and I think for what you get, it’s actually quite expensive.

Nice, good and mostly clean budget accommodation. Felt very safe here. Staff were lovely. Friendly people around and again, felt very safe. Perfect for those just arriving in NZ. Sim cards for free avaliable, lots of tour and travel info too. Do be aware there are many hidden, but refundable deposits required ($75 for your key, $10 for plates/bowels/kitchen stuff) that may shock those travelling cheap. Also be aware it it located right next to the central fire station and ambulance station which will have sirens going at any hour. Hostel has minimal sound proofing. For those who are easily awoken or triggered by loud sirens I would look elsewhere. Everything was super clean and tidy with the exception of black moldy curtains and maybe bed bugs? had bites allover my feet after staying here.

I stayed in a private room. It was a good room with everything I needed. There are obvious improvements that could be undertaken in this hostel such as new carpets, better storage in bathrooms/showers etc. I’m afraid there may have been bed bugs in my sheets - I woke up with itchy bites all over my feet. Good location and overall would give a 2.5 or 3 out of 5.

Have stayed here on 3 different occasions all for 3 nights and with large group bookings due to coming from an organisation. Every single stay I have had a bad experience in some sort of way. Though it is tolerable. Cons: - Staff/customer service. Staff are friendly depending who you get. But they are so unorganised no matter how many times they change managers. Due to being a large group booking we planned months and months in advance. Yet we arrive and rooms aren’t ready and I have to give them my own planning sheet because they can’t find who’s situated in what room. - BUGS. Had people in my group complain that there were bugs everywhere in their room. Though i’ve seen complaints about bedbugs in some reviews luckily we did not find any but cockroaches yes! We were on the TOP floor and yet cockroaches got to the room. This shows that cleaning needs to turn into deep cleaning. - DONT LOSE YOUR KEY. Due to a large group booking someone was bound to lose their key to one of the dorms. While yes that is our own fault. We were told a previous time we stayed that the lost key charge would cost $115 - which is understandable keeping in mind getting a new key cut + the electronic part to open the door. BUT this time round it became $250. Which is a large exaggeration on how much a replacement would actually cost. - Breakfast also sucks. Grab and coffee + pastry across the road at Gusstops instead. Pros: - Bed is actually quite comfy - Could fall asleep surprisingly easy even with city noise and nearby emergency services. - Downstairs entertainment area (vending machine, pool table, ping pong, tv, etc.) - Snack and drinks are affordable. - Good location for being close to central like Queen St and Viaduct. Notice how I put the cons first. Overall, while the place has good amenities and are somewhat accomodating, I hope I won’t be back but sometimes life gets you and it might not be in the budget for our organisations next event for better accommodation. If you are a traveller/backpacker it is BEARABLE for a couple of nights. Don’t stay any longer. There’s other places for even $10 more that are better.

I booked a single room, and it smells bad when I arrived. The staff said they cannot do anything because they are fully booked. I opened the window and set the table fan to blow air out whole night to survive the smell. Then I was wake up at 4am by itchiness on my hand and saw some bites, not sure they are from mosquitoes from the open window or bed bugs

住在6人間。房間有兩扇窗，但都在某人的床邊，剛好兩位房友都不願打開他們床邊的窗，使我在”溫室”中度過3個晚上。 有房友遭遇到”床虱Bed Bugs”。 而我被房間的空氣清新劑噴到，手碗和頸上有出現過”過敏反應”。 有Wi-Fi, 房間內有共用冰箱，有櫃子。 地點位置方便到CBD。

The place looks clean but it is not. The room is infested with bed bugs, living in the filthy carpet. The staff at reception were not apologetic and did not seem to want to do anything to rectify the issue. For example, calling pest control or preventing other guests from staying at the location. They did not even want to inspect the room that I was in and asked if I was ok which tells me that they have had this complaint before and still have not done anything about it. Check their Google reviews, you will see similar comments. Genuinely disappointing to pay more for a hostel with very few facilities and such conditions. WiFi was not offered upon checked in and guests needed to ask at reception for a slip every 48 hours.

Staff. Very rude and take deposit and never give me back. Bad excuses. Bed bugs in the bed. Sorry but this was the worst experience in Auckland for me...

First things first: I stayed there for six months because of my studies in Auckland. It was just terrible I still have nightmares(4months later) almost every room got bedbugs and me too because they don’t want to call a professional ,it’s not really clean , it’s noisy and the staff is really bad. Please don’t stay there please it’s not worth it!!!!!

I stayed in a single room. After a night of sleep, I found bed bug marks on my legs, back, and hands, accompanied by severe itching. I asked to change rooms and was moved to another room. The original room didn't smell and I liked the view, but there were bed bugs, and the room I moved to didn't have bed bugs, but it was very noisy because there was a fire station opposite. It also had a lot of strange smells. The single room had a refrigerator, small closet, fan, and heater, which was a great help in the cold winter. The entire building was poorly soundproofed, so the loud phone calls of long-term residents on other floors could even be heard in my room, making it very noisy. The location is a bit obscure but not bad. There is a bus stop right in front. Be careful at night as the nearby boulevards are densely populated with bars and entertainment districts. shower room and common area Generally kept clean.

I got bitten by bed bugs unfortunately

Sorry I had a very bad experience. Staff Is unpleasant. Bedbugs were in the bed and I got pains for several says. On top they didn't give me back the 70 deposit back which is a shame... no words for this hostel. Please don't stay at this hostel
