egypt Egypt v.2026-05-15

Terrorism and military operations in North Sinai and Western Desert/Libya border risks, with regional tensions possibly disrupting flights.

As of 2026-05-15, official advisories for Egypt tell travelers to avoid all travel in North Sinai, parts of the Egypt-Libya border area, parts of the Western Desert, and several remote border zones; other parts of Egypt remain under heightened caution because of terrorism, regional tension, and possible disruption.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid all travel to the areas named in the highest-level advisories before building an Egypt route. That includes North Sinai, parts of the Egypt-Libya border, Western Desert areas west of the Giza-Luxor-Aswan-Abu Simbel road, and remote border zones named by individual governments.

Outside those areas, treat Egypt as elevated-risk travel. Check your own government's Egypt page before departure, recheck it close to travel, monitor flight and border updates, and add schedule slack if your route depends on internal transfers, border movement, or regional connections.

Avoid non-essential travel to northern South Sinai where official advisories name it. Canada's advisory names areas north of the St. Catherine-Nuweiba-El Tor Road; New Zealand flags the northern part of South Sinai beyond the St Catherine-Nuweiba Road.

Where exactly this applies
  • North Sinai / North Sinai Governorate: avoid-all-travel language appears in advisories from Canada, the UK, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, France, and Italy's area cautions.
  • Egypt-Libya border: the UK advises against all travel within 20 km of the border except El Salloum, where it advises against all but essential travel. Canada names within 50 km of the Libya border.
  • Western Desert: Canada advises avoiding areas west of the Giza-Luxor-Aswan-Abu Simbel road, including Dakhla oasis, with exclusions listed on its Egypt page. France names the Western Desert border zone and the Siwa / White Desert oasis area in its mapped warnings.
  • Egypt-Israel border: Germany's partial travel warning includes the Egyptian-Israeli border except Taba.
  • Egypt-Libya-Sudan tri-border area: Switzerland advises against travel including Gilf el-Kebir, Gabal Uwainat, and the Hala'ib Triangle.
  • South Sinai: Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel north of the St. Catherine-Nuweiba-El Tor Road. New Zealand flags the northern part of South Sinai beyond the St Catherine-Nuweiba Road. Italy marks the South Sinai Governorate / St Catherine Monastery area for particular caution.
  • Matruh / Alexandria-Marsa Matruh area: Italy marks the Matruh Governorate for border risk and the area between Alexandria and Marsa Matruh for landmine risk.
  • Aswan Governorate: Italy marks it for border risk.

Main Risk Pattern

The highest-level advice clusters around border, desert, and Sinai security zones. Repeated official rationales include terrorism, smuggling, armed groups, military operations, landmines, border restrictions, regional escalation, and possible flight disruption.

Canada's Egypt advisory, updated 2026-05-04 and checked here on 2026-05-14, gives avoid-all-travel advice for northern Sinai and for the Western Desert / Libya border zone. It separately advises avoiding non-essential travel to northern South Sinai north of the St. Catherine-Nuweiba-El Tor Road.

The UK Egypt warnings page, updated 2026-03-28, advises against all travel to North Sinai Governorate and within 20 km of the Egypt-Libya border, except El Salloum, where the advice is against all but essential travel. The same page flags heightened regional tension and possible disruption.

Germany's Egypt page, updated 2026-05-14, keeps a partial travel warning for northern Sinai, the Egyptian-Israeli border except Taba, remote Sahara areas, and Sahara border areas with Libya and Sudan. It also flags volatile regional security after U.S./Israel-Iran fighting and possible flight disruption.

France's Egypt security map, updated 2026-04-21, places parts of Egypt in red, orange, and yellow zones. Named areas include the Western Desert border zone, the Sudan border, northern Sinai, the Siwa / White Desert oasis area, and Egyptian territory outside the Western Desert. France also has active short updates on the Israel and Gaza situation and traffic-prohibited zones, both checked on 2026-05-14.

Switzerland's Egypt advice, updated 2026-03-02, advises against travel to North Sinai Governorate and the Egypt-Libya-Sudan tri-border area, including Gilf el-Kebir, Gabal Uwainat, and the Hala'ib Triangle.

Japan's MOFA notice, updated 2024-09-17 and checked on 2026-05-14, includes Level 3 language telling travelers not to travel for listed areas, alongside Level 1 caution for other listed areas. The notice cites ongoing security risks and tells travelers to monitor reliable information.

Broader Heightened Caution

Several governments keep broader Egypt advice below avoid-all-travel but above ordinary caution. Canada's countrywide advice is to exercise a high degree of caution because of regional tensions, an unpredictable security situation, and terrorism. Australia lists Egypt at exercise a high degree of caution on its destinations index, updated 2026-03-19. Ireland rates Egypt as high degree of caution on its Egypt page, updated 2026-03-02.

Italy's Viaggiare Sicuri Egypt page has several current security entries checked on 2026-05-14: border and flight disruption, South Sinai / St Catherine Monastery, the Alexandria-Marsa Matruh area because of landmines, Matruh Governorate because of border risk, North Sinai, Aswan Governorate, and a 2025-10-17 operational update about temporary journalist accreditation.

Before Booking

If your route touches Sinai beyond the Sharm el Sheikh perimeter, the Western Desert, the Libya or Sudan border areas, Matruh, Aswan border zones, or desert oasis routes, check the exact line on the official map or page before paying for transport. The named areas are specific: a road, oasis, border strip, or governorate can sit near a higher-risk boundary without being described the same way by every government.

For Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, the Red Sea coast, or Sharm el Sheikh, the advisories still point to elevated caution. Keep transport flexible, monitor flight and regional updates, avoid restricted areas, and follow local authority instructions if security conditions change.

Do not infer that overland movement is safer, cheaper, or more reliable than flying from these advisories alone. The official inputs support checking routes, avoiding named areas, and allowing disruption slack; they do not support a blanket route ranking.

Source Notes

The latest update in this set is Germany's 2026-05-14 Egypt advisory. Most other current pages were updated between 2026-02-19 and 2026-05-04, with Japan and New Zealand carrying older notices that were still checked here on 2026-05-14.

For same-week decisions, use the linked government page for your passport country first, then cross-check other governments if your route includes Sinai, desert travel, or border zones.
