Ethiopia has active official travel warnings as of 2026-05-15. Eight governments advise avoiding all travel to at least parts of the country, including Tigray, Amhara, Benishangul-Gumuz, Gambella, parts of Oromia and Somali, several border areas, and parts of Afar.
What Is Being Advised
Avoid all travel to the regions and border areas named in the strictest advisories. If your Ethiopia plan depends on overland movement through northern, western, central, Somali, or border areas, treat the route as blocked unless your own government advice and current local security information say it is workable.
For the rest of Ethiopia, several official advisories say to avoid non-essential travel or use heightened caution. Addis Ababa is treated less severely than many regions, but Canada still flags high crime, demonstrations that can turn violent, and the risk that unrest elsewhere could spread to major cities without warning.
Check your own government's Ethiopia page before booking, before departure, and before moving between regions. Add slack for fuel shortages, demonstrations, route disruption, and sudden security changes; the advisories do not rank unofficial overland workarounds as safer alternatives.
Where exactly this applies
Strict avoid-travel or equivalent warnings appear for Tigray, Amhara, Benishangul-Gumuz, Gambella, parts of Oromia, the Somali region, parts of Afar, the Danakil desert area, the Omo Valley, Dolo zone, the Fentale volcano area, and multiple border zones.
Named border-risk areas include territory near Sudan, South Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia, and Kenya. Some advisories give distance bands: 10 km from Eritrea, 10 km from South Sudan, 20 km from Sudan, 100 km from the Ethiopian border with Somalia and Kenya in the Somali region, and 30 km from the Somalia border in Fafan zone, with narrow exceptions around Wajale and certain principal roads depending on the advisory.
Canada flags the A4 highway from Addis Ababa to and including Ambo differently from nearby West Shewa areas: the surrounding listed Oromia zones are avoid-all-travel, while that A4 corridor is listed as avoid non-essential travel.

- Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Switzerland
- Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, United Kingdom

Why The Warnings Are Broad
The advisories cite armed conflict, civil unrest, violence, kidnapping, airstrikes, military activity, banditry, terrorism risk, landmines, fuel shortages, crime, demonstrations, and volcanic or seismic activity. The risk pattern is regional and route-specific, with strict warnings concentrated in named regions and border areas.
Germany's 2026-05-14 update warns against travel to large parts of Ethiopia and says consular help outside Addis Ababa is very limited. That changes the risk math for travelers who might otherwise plan to wait out a route closure, border problem, arrest, injury, or evacuation issue in a regional town.
Canada's 2026-05-12 advice separates Ethiopia into sharper travel decisions: avoid all travel to Amhara, Benishangul-Gumuz, Tigray, Gambella, listed Oromia zones, and several border areas; avoid non-essential travel to Ethiopia more broadly; use high caution in Addis Ababa.
The UK warning checked on 2026-05-14 lists border-distance rules and specific exceptions around Wajale and the principal road between Jijiga and Wajale. Spain's 2026-04-30 advice names Tigray, northwest Afar, Amhara including Lalibela, Gondar, Bahir Dar, and Blue Nile Falls, plus border territory with Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, and Somalia.
France has mapped security zones and active April 2026 updates for the security situation, northern Ethiopia, intercommunal violence, armed incidents in Amhara, and seismic or volcanic activity. Japan's 2025-03-21 notices list Level 4 evacuation / do-not-travel areas, Level 3 do-not-travel areas, Level 2 avoid-non-urgent-travel areas, and Level 1 caution areas.
What To Do If You Are Already Planning Ethiopia
If your itinerary touches a named avoid-travel region or border zone, skip that segment. A hotel booking, tour deposit, or bus ticket does not mean the route is currently workable.
If you are staying in Addis Ababa, keep the advice narrower: monitor demonstrations, avoid affected areas, follow local instructions, and keep enough schedule slack for movement restrictions or fuel disruption. Canada specifically flags high crime and the risk of spontaneous demonstrations becoming violent in the capital.
If you are already in Ethiopia, check the newest local instructions and your own government's advice before leaving the city you are in. The official inputs support caution around movement; they do not give enough evidence to rank alternative routes as safer.
Source Notes
Official advice varies by government and area. The strongest shared pattern is avoid-all-travel advice for multiple regions and borders. Softer countrywide labels and capital-city guidance appear alongside stricter regional warnings.
Update recency varies. Germany, France, Canada, the UK, Italy, Spain, Australia, Ireland, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Japan were checked on 2026-05-14 in the source material; the underlying advisory update dates range from 2025-03-21 to 2026-05-14.
