Found bed bugs on one of our bags when we left, had to take everything out of bags to check for any more. Whole place could do with a good clean, kitchen was dirty.

Vibe Analysis
Farm animals are part of the Junohall setup: George the dog is a regular character around the place, with pigs, horses, sheep, a deer, and other animals around the green property. It gives the hostel a relaxed, family-friendly, semi-rural feel rather than a city backpacker scene. The best bits are the shared spaces. There is a big, well-equipped kitchen, a warm lounge with a fireplace, sofas, books, movies, board games, and a wrap-around porch for sitting outside with the countryside view. The saltwater pool and free tennis court add more to do when the weather cooperates. The location works especially well for Waitomo Caves and Black Water Rafting, with some activities very close by. It is not really a town-center base, so arriving with groceries and a car makes life easier. Staff help with local plans, tour logistics, late arrivals, and practical fixes, though the manager's humor and style may not land for everyone. Rooms are simple and vary a lot. Private rooms and cabins can be clean and handy, but dorm bunks and mattresses are a recurring weak spot, and some rooms are small or get hot. The place is strongest as a short, social, outdoorsy Waitomo base with a cozy lounge and lots of practical facilities.
Signals to check
- Mattresses and bunks may be uncomfortable, especially in dorms.
- WiFi can be weak away from the common areas.
- Some rooms are small, hot, or have awkward locking setups.
- The hostel is outside town, so bring food before arriving if cooking.
- Cleanliness and maintenance are not perfectly consistent, especially around older furniture, fridges, and bathrooms.
- Staff style can be very informal and may feel too much for some travelers.
