A Scalinatella

Confirmed Hostelworld
This is not a hostel, there is no common area so do not expect to meet other travellers, apart maybe from those in your room. Rooms get very hot in the summer as there is no fan or AC. It’s a relatively cheaper option to stay near Amalfi, however would never go again as I was bitten all over by bed bugs ! Breakfast was a plus but very basic.

Vibe Analysis
A Scalinatella is a small, family-run base in Atrani, close to the beach and roughly a 10-15 minute walk from Amalfi. It fits the Amalfi Coast sweet spot: quieter than the main tourist crush, still close to ferries, buses, restaurants, hikes, and the sea. Gabriele and Filippo are the heartbeat here. Breakfast is a real ritual, usually with coffee or cappuccino, croissants or sweet items, and sometimes local fruit like oranges or lemon-dressed fruit salad. It is also the main social moment, with local tips for hikes, buses, beaches, food, and day plans built into the morning. The rooms are simple, clean, and often more like an old-school guesthouse than a classic party hostel. Expect modest, authentic spaces, sometimes with painted tiles, private bathrooms, big windows, town or sea views, and a lot of stairs woven into the Atrani layout. This is best for a relaxed Amalfi Coast trip with a warm human center: beach days, hikes, quiet nights in Atrani, and breakfast chats before launching into the coast. It is less ideal for anyone chasing a bar-hostel scene or polished hotel facilities.
Signals to check
- There is no real common area, so the social side is mostly breakfast and whoever is in the room nearby.
- Rooms may not have air conditioning; fans may be the cooling setup in hot months.
- Atrani has lots of stairs, and suitcases can be awkward.
- There may be no kitchen or secure in-room lockers.
- A nearby bell can be loud at night in some rooms.
- Some rooms and bathrooms are basic or older, including compact shower-toilet layouts.
