I recently stayed with friends and the overall cleanliness of the rooms were very poor. Daily cleaning services should be offered. *I also forgot to add that I believe that are suspected bed bugs issues in your private rooms. For that reason, I don’t think privacy matters more than the health and safety of your guests.

Vibe Analysis
The pool, hot tub and sauna are the main event at Dusky Lodge & Backpackers, especially after a cold Kaikoura day. The upstairs terrace adds mountain views, outdoor seating and BBQ space, so the best version of this place is more lodge hangout than polished boutique hostel. Inside, expect a big, practical setup: large kitchens, sofas, plenty of shared areas, and simple dorms or cabins. There may be on-site pizza or a small poolside cafe at times, and the location works for town, supermarkets, whale watching pickups, and road-trip stopovers. Staff can be very kind and helpful, with a few standout moments around late arrivals, upgrades, and lost items. The atmosphere is mixed. Kiwi Experience groups, families, road-trippers and backpackers all pass through, so it can feel busy and social, quiet and functional, or a bit corporate depending on timing. It is best for a short Kaikoura stop where facilities matter more than privacy, sleek rooms or a tightly run party scene.
