The island is beautiful and staff are helpful and friendly but the rooms are really not great for the price. My partner and I shared a private room (not ensuite) for two nights. There are mice in the rooms, I woke up with many bites (presumably from bed bugs), and a spider monkey climbed into our bed at 6am (kind of cute but not a relaxing way to wake up). There is also very little privacy. The private rooms are inside one large building with thin walls separating the rooms. The walls do not extend all the way to the ceiling which means light and sound from adjacent rooms is an issue. Even a quiet conversation can be easily overheard. Again, the island is lovely and I really enjoy the rustic vibe. But I personally don’t think the private rooms justify the price. Also, if you are looking forward to seeing coral you will probably be disappointed. But this is no fault of the hostel!

Vibe Analysis
Free-roaming monkeys and other animals are part of the whole Mistica Island deal, adding a weird, memorable edge to the beach-island setting. The hostel sits in a remote, beautiful spot with calm clear water, a sandy beach, and a small communal feel that can make it easy to settle in for a few days. The social side seems strongest when the place leans into shared meals, friendly staff energy, and organized activities. Kayaking, snorkeling, plankton trips, wakeboarding, subwing, cocktails, and integration activities all fit the fun-first version of the place. It can feel intimate and relaxed rather than big-party chaotic, with a private-island mood when it works. Comfort is more rugged than polished. Dorms may lack AC, bunk plugs, locked doors, and strong fan coverage, WiFi can be patchy or limited by time, and some power or water issues have happened. Food is a major tradeoff: meals can be good, but the restaurant is expensive, options may be limited, outside food and cooking are restricted, and availability can be inconsistent.
