I was not impressed with the Tuatara Hostel. The kitchen was dirty and far from well-equipped. The common areas were untidy. The staff was very unhelpful and impolite. The only positive thing I have to say about this hostel is, that the room seemed clean, and I didn't get bed bugs.

Vibe Analysis
The Intercity and Stewart Island shuttle stop right outside Tuatara Lodge, so it works best as a central Invercargill launch pad for bus days, Rakiura transfers, supermarket runs, and one-night Southland logistics. There is a large kitchen, lounge space, keycard access, laundry, and an attached cafe/bar/brewery setup with local beer, coffee, pizza, and plenty of seating. Some private rooms feel clean, spacious, warm, and comfortable, and the female dorm can feel modern and roomy with high ceilings. This is not a high-atmosphere hangout. The social energy can be thin, reception may be absent, and check-in can run through the bar or cafe. It can still suit a budget traveler who wants a clean-enough bed in the middle of town and does not need a big hostel scene. The rough edges are real: street noise, bar noise, shaky bunks, thin walls, limited or unclear parking, small wet showers, sparse hooks or storage, and inconsistent staff help are all practical risks. Pick a private room over a dorm if sleep matters.
