   Great location and very helpful, lovely staff. The older building has all the quirks and charms you'd expect, maybe some a little more than I'd hoped, but the overall cleanliness was appreciated. Other reviews prompted me to bring earplugs, which I needed. We were pretty uncomfortable to find that someone had seemingly entered our private room while we were out for the day. We returned late to find the light in our room on, and we are absolutely certain it was off when we left mid-day. No housekeeping had been done that we could see, but nothing seemed to be missing either so 🤷. Overall, we had a satisfactory experience. I will probably stick with a hotel next time, but if you are looking for a very affordable hostel stay in a great location with wonderful staff, the Halifax Backpackers Hostel is a good choice.

   Felt like I was gonna get stabbed or mugged the entire time. Trash everywhere including on the stairs to exit. Never introduced to staff because of an event they were running and there was no front desk i found. Cut my stay short by one night because was too spooked to get a hotel. Avoid at all costs as a solo traveller. This may be the worst place I’ve stayed in.

   Like others i will double down in saying the photos online are quite outdated and no longer at all an accurate depiction of what you get… The upside was the staff, who were very nice and accomadating. But also on that note not really ensuring those who entered the hostel were actually staying there… Note too that construction is directly next door and starts promptly and loudly at 7am. A great alarm if that’s what you’re after. There will be many more months of this is you’re planning to stay in 2025. Rooms/common spaces/kitchen/bathrooms are all pretty rough and outdated. Lifting tiles, layers of dust and grime, potentially some mold, paint missing etc. Kitchen is a miss and quite small—if more than one person is cooking, good luck. Beds are creaky and the top bunk felt like it was unlevel and I might roll off. I switched to an open bottom bunk and the mattress was all springs and no mattress, which made for a very pokey and proddy sleep. Curtains are thin and useless. Window AC worked and made the room a decent temp but was incredibly loud when on. Also a major lack of hooks and storage. One bathroom has a huge empty wall where a few hooks would do wonders to hand your clothes on when showering. Just another detail that is lacking. Security as some mentioned is basically non-existent before 9 or 10pm. I could have walked in without a booking into nearly any room and made myself at home. Main hostel entrance off the cafe often has staff but there’s no confirmation of stay before entering/walking past into the hostel. Both rooms i stayed in were unlocked every time i entered, regardless of time of day. You could really settle into any room regardless of assignment, which i imagine has caused some issues. Patio is a hot mess. Broken chairs, crap vibes and next to garbage containers. A little privacy screen, some lights and better furniture could go a long way (inside too). Overall, I wouldn’t stay here again unless they renovate or really revive all the small outdated/dirtying details. A deep clean and a layer of paint would make a huge difference. I almost switched to a hostel in the south end of town at the last minute and sort of wish i had. Since i was only staying for a few days and not spending much time in the hostel aside from sleeping, it was fine but very underwhelming. Another note: the cafe is also a bit if a mess. I went first thing in the morning and they had next to nothing in the pastry/display case. It’s a bit if a hole-in-the-wall (same goes for the sushi restaurant pop up within). Coffee was decent but it’s just not a vibe on any level. With regard to the area of town. There are definitely unhomed people, but as a solo female i never felt overly unsafe. This isn’t specific to this area by any means, I was asked for money/change many times in all parts of Halifax. The North end is a cool spot with some great breweries/restaurants and shops! It’s also walkable to downtown and the bus is accessible. As someone who generally takes ratings and reviews as a cue, i wish i’d read more before booking this. The 4.3 google rating got me. I’d give this max a 3.5—fine for a few days of sleeping if you’re not really using common spaces etc. if you plan on cooking or working/hanging out, i’d pass. I would pay maximum $25 a night to stay here and even then probably wouldn’t stay again. Also want to note that if you’re looking/booking on Hostelworld, the rating system is very generous. After clicking the sad/happy/upset icons for ratings it average out to 4.6, so I had to adjust to bring the total down appropriately.

   Originally booked a 7 night stay and unfortunately had to check out early after my first night. The cleanliness and environment was not what I was expecting and left me feeling quite uncomfortable and unsafe. Upon arriving to the hostel, I found my door unlocked and left open for who knows how long as it was evident others were staying in the room but no one had returned until hours after I arrived. It felt as though the hostel was not properly monitored by the staff throughout the day to ensure safety for all guests. The washrooms were poorly maintained, the floors were dirty and grimy and the shower stalls were unkept. There were no shower handles, just a thin metal rod making it incredibly difficult to use. There was also a significant amount of mold within the shower itself and a potent mildew smell. I find it interesting that there are no images of the kitchen, bathrooms or common areas which feels deceptive now knowing the state of them. The kitchen itself was fine, wasn’t overly dirty but wasn’t the cleanest (both in the evening and the morning) in comparison to other hostels Ive stayed in. There were dishes in the sink that had remained overnight, overfilled garbage leading to flies and an unpleasant smell. The area was okay, close enough to downtown but a little more sketchy. Overall I was disappointed, the staff however were very lovely and understanding. Management refunded just under 50% of the total cost of what I paid for the 7 nights and had no comments to the feedback I provided regarding my experience. I personally would not stay again or recommend to others especially as there is a much nicer hostel approx. 25 min walk away for very comparable pricing.

   The staff was lovely, and the facilities were pretty clean. I will say exterior doors weren’t locked at night, and my dorm room door didn’t lock. I also found it strange that a hostel wouldn’t offer the option of a female only dorm. Beds should also be replaced, mine was literally like laying on bare springs. Probably will not stay here again.
