What Is Being Advised

Avoid non-essential travel to the Upper Huallaga River Valley and surroundings, and to some border areas with Colombia and Ecuador. The named risks include drug trafficking, robberies, kidnappings, extortion, raids, organized crime, illegal mining, armed groups, landmines, and unmarked minefields.

For the rest of Peru, treat the trip as elevated-risk. Check local instructions before moving between regions, avoid large gatherings and protests, monitor strike and weather updates, and add slack if your itinerary depends on road transport, border crossings, or fixed-date onward travel.

What The Warnings Are About

The sharpest official warnings are regional. Among the advisories checked, four include avoid-all-travel or equivalent highest-level language for parts of Peru. The VRAEM is the clearest high-risk area. Crime warnings reach standard visitor routes. Official entries mention high crime levels, robberies, kidnappings, extortion, raids, sexual assaults, scams around Lima airport, and increased assaults. Italy’s caution entries specifically name Lima, Cuzco, Machupicchu, Chan Chan, Paracas, and other tourist-relevant places for robbery, crime, or security risk.

Disruption risk is active. The UK advisory says a State of Emergency is in place, with increased security patrols and armed forces visible on streets, and tells travelers to avoid large gatherings and protests. Canada’s countrywide caution notice points to social conflicts and strikes that may occur across Peru.

Weather and health notices can still break a route. France has an active update on severe weather and flooding. Italy’s notices mention heavy rain, dengue in Amazonas, and broader health caution. Treat those as itinerary risks, especially for road travel and remote areas, while keeping them separate from avoid-all-travel security zones.

How To Use This For A Trip

If your route includes VRAEM, the Upper Huallaga River Valley, remote areas east of Huánuco, or border areas with Colombia or Ecuador, check the latest official page before booking and be ready to change the route. The advisories are too geographically specific for a simple “Peru is fine” or “Peru is unsafe” read.

For Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Paracas, Nasca, and other common visitor stops, the checked advisories support heightened caution. Monitor protests, strikes, state-of-emergency measures, weather alerts, and robbery reports close to travel dates.

Do not assume older advice has expired because the trip is touristy. The checked dates here are 2026-05-14, and the listed official updates range from 2024-11-29 to 2026-05-08.
