Bangladesh has active official travel warnings as of 2026-05-15. The strictest advisories say to avoid all travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts and Myanmar-border areas because of politically motivated violence, kidnappings, sporadic ethnic clashes, terrorism risk, and an uncertain security situation.
What Is Being Advised
Avoid all travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the Bangladesh-Myanmar border areas covered by the strictest advisories. If your route includes Rangamati, Khagrachari, Bandarban, or nearby border zones, skip or reroute unless you have an essential reason and current local clearance.
For the rest of Bangladesh, treat travel as elevated risk. Check the newest official page before booking non-refundable transport, avoid large gatherings, monitor demonstrations and strikes, and add slack for fuel shortages, flight disruption, flooding, and local security measures.
Where exactly this applies
- Chittagong Hill Tracts: Rangamati, Khagrachari, and Bandarban are named in official advice.
- Bangladesh-Myanmar border areas are named in multiple advisories.
- Dhaka is flagged by Italy's Viaggiare Sicuri for particular caution due to demonstrations.
- Northeast Bangladesh, including the Sylhet region, has increased seasonal flash-flood risk during the pre-monsoon period.

The Main Risk Areas
The strictest named warning is for the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Canada says to avoid all travel there because of politically motivated violence, kidnappings, and sporadic ethnic clashes. New Zealand advises avoiding non-essential travel to the same region because of terrorism, kidnapping, and an uncertain security situation.
The UK identifies the Chittagong Hill Tracts as Rangamati, Khagrachari, and Bandarban, and advises against all but essential travel there. Switzerland advises against tourist and non-urgent travel to the Myanmar border area. France places Myanmar-border regions in its higher-risk security zones.
A Dhaka stop and a southeastern-border route are different risk problems. The article-level answer is still blunt: do not treat the Chittagong Hill Tracts as a normal backpacker detour in May 2026.
Nationwide Caution
Bangladesh is also under broader caution advice. Canada warns of possible demonstrations, clashes, and nationwide general strikes, with security conditions that could deteriorate with little warning. Spain specifically says to avoid large gatherings and use caution, especially outside major cities.
Australia lists Bangladesh at "Exercise a high degree of caution," with its destination entry updated on 2026-05-12. Ireland also rates Bangladesh as requiring a high degree of caution. Japan keeps Bangladesh nationwide at its Level 1 caution label and separately lists avoid-non-essential-travel advice for specified areas.
Italy has current Bangladesh updates for security, transport or border disruption, fuel availability, and measles. Its 2026-05-05 security notes mark Dhaka and the Chittagong Hill Tracts for particular caution; its April and May updates also point to operational disruption and health risk.
Transport, Fuel, Flooding, And Flights
The UK warns that seasonal flash flooding is more likely in parts of northeast Bangladesh, including Sylhet, during the pre-monsoon period. Heavy rain can trigger floods with little warning and disrupt transport, utilities, and access to services in low-lying and river-adjacent areas.
Fuel and energy shortages are part of the travel problem. The UK says authorities have announced limits on fuel sales, which may cause transport disruption and delays in some areas. Italy separately has a current fuel-availability update.
Flight plans can be affected even when Bangladesh is not the origin of the disruption. The UK notes that escalation in the Middle East has caused airspace closures, delayed flights, and cancelled flights, with possible knock-on effects for trips outside the region.
What To Check Before You Move
Check the newest official page for your passport country before departure and again before moving between regions. The most recent advisories in this set were checked on 2026-05-14, and some official pages changed in late April or early May 2026.
If your plan includes overland movement near the Myanmar border, the Chittagong Hill Tracts, or northeast Bangladesh during heavy rain, verify the route locally before travel day. The official inputs support avoiding named high-risk regions, monitoring local instructions, and allowing extra travel time; they do not support a blanket claim that one transport mode is safer than another.
For city travel, watch demonstrations, strikes, large gatherings, and same-day access to your road, bus station, airport route, or neighborhood.
Source Notes
The strongest traveler-facing advice in this set is to avoid all travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts and Myanmar-border areas. Other advisories use softer nationwide language, including avoid non-essential travel for specific areas and heightened caution for Bangladesh more broadly.
Official pages do not use identical maps or labels. Canada, the UK, New Zealand, Switzerland, France, Japan, Spain, Australia, Italy, and Ireland each publish in their own format, with different update dates and geographic wording. For practical planning, named places and route scope matter more than trying to flatten the labels into one countrywide verdict.
