Official advisories checked on 2026-05-14 still tell travelers to avoid all travel to Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and some nearby administrative boundary areas; Georgia also has current caution notices for demonstrations, border areas, and possible flight disruption as of 2026-05-15.
What Is Being Advised
Avoid all travel to Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Check the boundary-area wording before you go anywhere near either occupied region: one advisory names the 5 km area along the administrative boundary lines and excludes Highway E60, while another warns against all but essential travel immediately next to those lines.
In Tbilisi, avoid demonstrations, security-force lines, and nearby streets where clashes could spread. Check local instructions on the day you move.
If your route touches border areas, Omalo, Kakheti, Akhalgori, Kurta, Eredvi, or South Ossetia-linked areas, verify the exact current advice before committing money or time. The official inputs support caution and local-instruction checks. They do not support a blanket claim that one transport mode is safer than another.
Build slack into flights and connections. One official notice says escalation in the Middle East has caused airspace closures, delays, and cancellations that may affect trips even outside the Middle East.
Where exactly this applies
- Abkhazia: avoid all travel.
- South Ossetia: avoid all travel.
- Areas immediately next to the administrative boundary lines with Abkhazia and South Ossetia: avoid travel or avoid all but essential travel, depending on the advisory.
- Within 5 km of the administrative boundary lines with Abkhazia and South Ossetia: one advisory says avoid all travel, excluding Highway E60.
- Tbilisi: heightened caution because of demonstrations and possible clashes between security forces and protesters.
- Omalo and Kakheti: heightened caution in the Italian advisory because of border risk.
- Akhalgori, Kurta, Eredvi, and the South Ossetia region: heightened caution in the Italian advisory because of security risks.

What Changes By Area
Abkhazia and South Ossetia are the clearest hard-stop areas. Canada names crime, military activity, detention risk, and landmines near the occupied regions and within 5 km of the administrative boundary lines, excluding Highway E60. The UK cites security reasons for avoiding South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and warns against all but essential travel immediately next to the boundary lines.
Tbilisi has a separate risk profile. Canada's notice, updated 2026-05-04 and checked 2026-05-14, says to use heightened caution in the capital because of demonstrations and clashes between security forces and protesters. France also has an active "Manifestations" notice checked 2026-05-14.
Japan's advice has multiple levels on the same country page. Level 3 says travelers should not travel to the listed area. Level 2 says avoid non-essential travel. Level 1 applies heightened caution nationwide. The nationwide caution label does not change the Level 3 advice for the listed area.
Italy's Viaggiare Sicuri notices, updated 2026-02-26, flag Georgia generally for above-baseline caution and name Omalo, Kakheti, Akhalgori, South Ossetia, Kurta, and Eredvi. The summaries point to border risk or security risk and tell travelers to follow local authority instructions.
Before You Book Or Move
Check the latest official page for your passport country, then check the specific region or town in your route. A Tbilisi-only trip, a mountain route near a border area, and an itinerary near Abkhazia or South Ossetia have different risk profiles.
If you are already in Georgia, avoid protest areas in Tbilisi and do not try to improvise around administrative boundary lines. The advisories name detention risk, military activity, landmines, demonstrations, and clashes. A hostel desk or a cheap taxi cannot reliably solve those problems.
For flights, keep enough buffer for cancellations or rerouting. The source only supports a disruption warning tied to wider Middle East escalation. It does not say Georgian airports are closed or that overland travel is safer.
Source Notes
Strong signal: Abkhazia and South Ossetia carry the clearest avoid-all-travel advice. Canada, the UK, Switzerland, Japan, New Zealand, and France all have avoid-all-travel or equivalent high-level regional restrictions in this packet. The exact boundaries and labels differ by government, so use the official pages for the final route check.
Medium signal: demonstrations are current and narrower. Canada names Tbilisi and France has an active demonstrations notice. The source material does not give protest dates, locations, or a forecast.
France also has active notes checked 2026-05-14 on entry of minors into Georgian territory and travel insurance. Those may matter for families and policy checks. They do not change the core security advice in this article.
