Mozambique has active official travel warnings as of 2026-05-15. The strongest current advice is to avoid all travel to parts of northern Mozambique, especially Cabo Delgado and named districts in Nampula and Niassa; countrywide advisories still cite crime, terrorism, demonstrations, kidnappings, fuel limits, flood damage, damaged roads, infrastructure problems, and supply shortages.
What Is Being Advised
Avoid all travel where your official advisory applies that level, especially in Cabo Delgado and the named northern districts listed below. Before booking northern Mozambique, check your passport-country advisory, insurance terms, local instructions, road access, and fuel availability; if the trip depends on overland movement through the north, add enough slack to change route or stop moving.
For Maputo-only or southern Mozambique trips, the source material supports heightened caution for those areas. Keep monitoring official pages before departure and while moving, because the most recent advisory checks here were on 2026-05-14.
Where exactly this applies
- Cabo Delgado: multiple advisories warn against all travel to the province. Some governments treat Pemba, Palma, Afungi, or nearby areas as exceptions or softer restricted zones.
- Nampula: Memba and Eráti are repeatedly named in avoid-all-travel advice. Germany names Memba and Erati; Canada names Erati and Memba; the UK names Memba and Eráti.
- Niassa: Mecula and Marrupa appear in avoid-non-essential or avoid-travel advice. France also has a current update titled “Menace terroriste dans la province de Niassa.”
- Pemba City: Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel because of the risk that insurgency expands to the area.
- Spain says travelers should avoid Cabo Delgado, and also maintains no-travel advice for eastern Niassa and northern Nampula.
- Italy marks several Cabo Delgado districts for above-baseline security caution, including Macomia, Palma, Chiùre, Muidumbe, Nangade, Mocimboa, and Quissanga.

Northern Mozambique Has The Strongest Warnings
Canada’s 2026-05-04 advisory says to avoid all travel to Cabo Delgado Province because of ongoing insurgency by militants, with Pemba City under avoid-non-essential-travel advice. Canada also says to avoid all travel to Erati and Memba districts in Nampula Province, and to avoid non-essential travel to Marrupa and Mecula in Niassa Province.
The UK’s 2026-02-26 advice names the same northern pattern: avoid all travel to Cabo Delgado Province except Palma town and the area around Pemba and Afungi, and avoid all travel to Memba and Eráti districts in Nampula. Palma town and the area around Pemba and Afungi sit under the UK’s “all but essential travel” advice.
Germany updated its Mozambique page on 2026-05-14 and warns against travel to Cabo Delgado except Pemba, Memba and Erati in Nampula, and Mecula and Marrupa in Niassa. The same page flags severe floods, damaged roads, infrastructure problems, supply shortages, and fuel limits.
France has mapped security-zone advice and a current “Dernières minutes” update titled “Menace terroriste dans la province de Niassa.” The French page also names terrorism, ordinary crime, road risk, maritime piracy, and natural hazards as risks for Mozambique travelers.
Countrywide Caution Still Applies
Ireland rates Mozambique at “High Degree of Caution,” Canada says to exercise a high degree of caution countrywide because of crime, demonstrations and violent spillovers, kidnappings, and terrorism, and Australia lists Mozambique at “Exercise a high degree of caution.” Those labels describe the baseline outside the highest-risk areas.
Italy’s current page includes a 2026-04-17 update on fuel availability, plus security notes for Cabo Delgado and specific districts including Macomia, Palma, Chiùre, Muidumbe, Nangade, Mocimboa, and Quissanga. It also flags border risk and tells travelers to follow local authority instructions.
Japan’s 2025-07-04 update includes multiple levels for Mozambique, from heightened caution to avoid non-essential travel and “do not travel” for listed areas. The Japanese notes cite ongoing security risks and advise travelers to monitor reliable information and take sufficient safety measures.
Before You Move
Check exact district names, not just province names. Cabo Delgado is often treated as the core no-go area. Pemba, Palma, Afungi, Memba, Eráti, Mecula, and Marrupa are handled differently across official pages.
Do not rely on an old route report for northern Mozambique. The current advisories name insurgency, militant attacks, terrorism threat, flood damage, damaged roads, fuel shortages, infrastructure problems, and supply shortages; any one of those can affect road movement, evacuation options, insurance coverage, and whether a booked transfer runs.
If you are already in Mozambique, keep the latest official page for your passport country open and follow local instructions. The most recent source checks in this article were on 2026-05-14, one day before publication.
Source Notes
Strong signal: repeated official advice against all travel to overlapping northern areas, especially Cabo Delgado and named districts in Nampula and Niassa. Use the strictest applicable advice for your nationality, insurer, operator, and route.
Medium signal: regional exceptions differ by government. Pemba, Palma, and Afungi are handled differently across the inputs, so check the current official page before treating any exception as usable.
