myanmar Myanmar v.2026-05-15

Armed conflict, attacks on civilian areas, arbitrary detention, kidnapping and fuel shortages can disrupt travel and limit consular support.

  • aggiornato 2026-05-15

Myanmar remains under avoid-all-travel advice from multiple governments as of 2026-05-15, with source pages checked on 2026-05-14. Official notices cite armed conflict, political violence, arbitrary detention, attacks affecting civilian areas, landmines, border restrictions, fuel shortages, disrupted services, and limited consular support.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid all travel to Myanmar unless your own government gives a narrower instruction that clearly applies to you. If you are already there, check your government’s latest Myanmar page now, monitor local instructions, and leave only if you can do so safely; one official advisory explicitly tells its citizens to leave now if safe.

Avoid overland border crossings, conflict-area detours, and tight onward connections. Official notices mention border restrictions, fuel shortages, disrupted public services, and limits on land or sea entry and exit. If travel is unavoidable, build in delay time and keep backup options for roads, borders, ferries, and domestic transfers.

Where exactly this applies

The strongest current pattern is country-level avoid-all-travel advice. Several governments also define specific areas and exceptions.

  • New Zealand says avoid all travel to Myanmar except Yangon, and avoid non-essential travel to Yangon because of the volatile security and political situation.
  • The UK names Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Mon, Rakhine, Shan North, Sagaing, Magway, parts of Tanintharyi, North Mandalay, and areas east of the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway in Bago among places where it advises against all travel.
  • Italy’s current notices name Mon State, Magway Region, Sagaing Region, Kayah State, Rakhine State, Kachin State, Hsipaw, Myawadi, the Bangladesh border area, and the Golden Triangle region for armed groups, clashes, landmines, border risk, or other security concerns.
  • France’s map uses red zones for areas formally advised against and orange zones for areas advised against except for imperative reasons.
  • Switzerland’s advice includes warnings against travel in Kachin, Shan, Mandalay, Rakhine, and Chin.

Why The Advice Is Severe

Germany’s 2026-05-14 update warns against all travel to Myanmar and cites post-election instability, armed conflict across much of the country, arbitrary arrest risk, attacks including against civilian areas, disrupted public services, and limits on land and sea entry or exit (Auswärtiges Amt).

Canada’s 2026-05-04 advisory says to avoid all travel because of politically motivated violence, terrorist attacks, kidnapping, arbitrary arrest and detention, civil unrest, and ongoing armed conflict. It also tells Canadians in Myanmar to leave now if they can do so safely, shelter in a safe place in areas with ongoing conflict, and expect limited Canadian consular assistance (Global Affairs Canada).

Ireland’s 2026-02-11 advice strongly advises against all travel to Myanmar/Burma and links the situation to the February 2021 military coup (Ireland DFA). Australia lists Myanmar under its avoid-all-travel category, with its destination entry updated on 2026-04-07 (Smartraveller).

Japan’s 2025-12-16 notice includes a Level 3 warning telling travelers to stop travel, plus a separate Level 2 category for avoiding non-essential travel in listed areas. The update cites ongoing security risks and tells travelers to monitor reliable information and take safety measures (Japan MOFA).

Current Place-Specific Concerns

Official notices point to armed groups, clashes, landmines, border restrictions, and security risks in specific states, regions, and border areas.

Italy’s 2026-01-21 notices flag Mon State, Magway Region, Sagaing Region, Kayah State, Rakhine State, Kachin State, Myawadi, Hsipaw, the Bangladesh border area, and the Golden Triangle region. The listed concerns include armed groups, armed conflict, clashes, landmines, border risk, and security risks; travelers are told to avoid affected areas or activities and follow local instructions (Viaggiare Sicuri).

France’s current Myanmar advice includes security-zone warnings, anti-personnel mines, seismic activity, monsoon risks, and road-accident risks. A separate current alert says Myanmar is affected by fuel shortages linked to the war in the Middle East (France Diplomatie security advice; France Diplomatie latest alerts).

Before Any Unavoidable Travel

Check your own government’s Myanmar page before booking or moving inside the country. Advice changes by citizenship because consular capacity, evacuation support, and official risk thresholds differ.

Verify border status, internal transport, fuel availability, local curfews, and conflict reports close to departure. The official inputs mention border restrictions, land and sea exit limits, disrupted public services, fuel shortages, and armed conflict; any one of those can break a route that looked viable when planned.

Treat Yangon as a separate risk check. New Zealand gives Yangon a softer instruction than the rest of Myanmar and still says to avoid non-essential travel there because of the volatile security and political situation (SafeTravel NZ).
