Arbitrary detention, serious arrest risk, extensive restrictions on foreigners, and fast-changing Korean Peninsula tensions can trap travelers.

North Korea is under avoid-all-travel official guidance as of 2026-05-15 because of arbitrary detention risk, restrictions on foreigners, and a security situation that can change with little warning.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid all travel to North Korea except essential trips where you can accept serious detention and movement-control risk. Postpone discretionary tourism.

If travel is unavoidable, check the newest official advisory before paying for flights, tours, visas, or insurance. The advisories used here were checked on 2026-05-14; the newest individual page update in this set was 2026-05-06, and the oldest was 2024-11-29.

A calm Pyongyang itinerary does not show low risk. One official advisory says daily life in the capital may appear calm while the security situation can change quickly with no advance warning about possible action by authorities.

Why The Advice Is So Strong

New Zealand’s North Korea advisory says do not travel. The advisory cites extensive restrictions on foreigners, serious risk of arrest and detention, and an uncertain security situation that could change with very little warning. Its page was updated on 2024-11-29.

Australia’s Smartraveller destination index lists North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, at “Do not travel.” The destination entry was updated on 2026-03-31.

The UK advises against all but essential travel, citing high tension on the Korean Peninsula and the risk that authorities may act with little or no warning. Ireland advises avoiding non-essential travel. These advisories rule out ordinary tourism.

Italy’s Viaggiare Sicuri page carries security notices for North Korea dated 2025-07-06 and 2025-07-07. Those notices support heightened caution and following local authority instructions; they are weaker traveler restrictions than the avoid-all-travel advisories above.
