Terrorism, violence and kidnapping across Somalia, with large Somaliland crowds and celebratory gunfire around 18 May.

Somalia is under avoid-all-travel advice as of 2026-05-15. Current official advice points to terrorism, kidnapping, piracy, continuing violence, and the risk that travelers may struggle to leave if conditions worsen.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid all travel to Somalia. If you are already there, check your own government's latest advice, follow local authority instructions, and make departure plans if your advisory tells nationals to leave. One official advisory checked on 2026-05-14 specifically urges nationals in Somalia despite the warning to leave quickly unless they are covered by a robust evacuation arrangement.

Strong signal: 10 governments in the current advisory material advise avoiding all travel or use equivalent wording. Somalia carries highest-level travel warning treatment across the reviewed official sources.

For Somaliland, check the exact wording before making any move. Official advice draws different lines across the region. One advisory excludes Awdal, Maroodijeh, and Sahil from its all-travel warning for Somalia; another says not to travel to Somalia, including Somaliland.

For 18 May in Somaliland, avoid large public gatherings, demonstrations, security activity, and celebratory events involving firearms if you are already in an affected area. Monitor local instructions and leave extra time around movement in urban areas.

Where exactly this applies
  • Somalia nationwide is covered by avoid-all-travel advice in the Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Ireland, Japan, and New Zealand entries.
  • Germany warns against all travel to Somalia and the waters off Somalia.
  • The UK advises against all travel to Somalia, including eastern Somaliland: Togdheer, Sanaag, and Sool. Its entry excludes the western Somaliland regions of Awdal, Maroodijeh, and Sahil from that specific all-travel warning.
  • France marks multiple areas above ordinary baseline advice, including central and southern Somalia, Puntland, Somaliland, Hargeisa, and Berbera.
  • Italy has a current security alert advising against travel and a separate caution entry for Somalia.

Why The Advice Is So Severe

The repeated reasons are terrorism, kidnapping, piracy, continuing violence, limited security conditions, and a volatile security situation. Canada cites a high threat of domestic terrorism and warns that travelers may have difficulty leaving Somalia if the situation deteriorates suddenly. Ireland also cites an unpredictable security environment and an ongoing high threat of domestic terrorism.

Germany's 2026-05-14 notice urges nationals already in Somalia despite the travel warning to leave quickly unless they have a robust evacuation arrangement. Japan keeps Somalia nationwide at Level 4, telling travelers to evacuate and not travel. Switzerland advises against all travel to Somalia and any stays there. Australia lists Somalia as "Do not travel" in its current destinations index, updated 2026-05-01.

Somaliland And 18 May

Somaliland needs a separate check because the official lines differ. The UK warning applies to Somalia including eastern Somaliland, specifically Togdheer, Sanaag, and Sool. The same UK entry excludes Awdal, Maroodijeh, and Sahil from that all-travel warning. New Zealand's advice is broader: do not travel to Somalia, including Somaliland.

The UK also warns that Somaliland may see larger public gatherings, demonstrations, security activity, and celebratory gunfire during annual 18 May celebrations. If you are already there, avoid public gatherings and follow local authority instructions; celebratory crowds can create travel risk.
