As of 2026-05-15, official advisories still tell travelers to avoid all travel to specific parts of Tunisia, especially border zones, western mountain areas, military-operation zones, and parts of the south. Countrywide advice is lower in several notices. The highest current instruction remains avoid-all-travel for named zones.
What Is Being Advised
Avoid all travel to the Tunisia-Algeria border zone, the Tunisia-Libya border zone, listed western mountain areas, and designated military-operation zones. If your route uses overland border crossings, desert roads, or travel through Kasserine, El Kef, Jendouba, Sidi Bouzid, Kebili, Tataouine, Médenine, Zarzis, Douz, Nefta, Ras Jedir, or Ben Gardane, check the latest official map and local instructions before booking anything non-refundable.
For the rest of Tunisia, several official advisories still call for heightened caution because of terrorism risk, demonstrations, and security operations. Monitor local instructions, avoid protest areas if they form, and recheck entry rules before departure; a French update dated 2026-04-07 says passports are required for all stays in Tunisia.
Where exactly this applies
- Algeria border: areas within 20 km of the Algerian border are listed in one advisory as avoid-all-travel, with an exception for the P7 highway to/from the Malloula border crossing and tourist towns including Aïn Draham, Chebika, Mides, Tabarka, and Tamerza, where higher caution is still advised.
- Libya border: areas within 30 km of the Libya border are listed as avoid-all-travel in one advisory.
- Western and central-western Tunisia: named areas include Kasserine governorate, the Chaambi Mountains National Park, Mount Salloum, Mount Sammamma, Mount Mghila, Mount Orbata, and mountain ranges near the Tunisia-Algeria border.
- Southern Tunisia: official notices name the far south, areas south of and including Nefta, Douz, Médenine, and Zarzis, plus Tataouine, Kebili, Ras Jedir, and Ben Gardane.
- Additional heightened-caution areas in the inputs include El Kef, Jendouba, Sidi Bouzid, Sidi Ali Ben Aoun, Bir El Hafey, and Tunis.

Why The Warnings Cluster In These Areas
The avoid-all-travel zones concentrate around borders, mountains, and military-operation areas. The stated reasons are recurring anti-terrorist operations, cross-border terrorist activity, kidnapping risk, demonstrations, border restrictions, and limited cellular coverage in some areas.
Western Tunisia is the clearest repeated pattern. Official notices name the Tunisia-Algeria border, Kasserine, Chaambi Mountains National Park, Mount Salloum, Mount Sammamma, Mount Mghila, Mount Orbata, El Kef, Jendouba, and other central-western or northwestern areas. France also flags the far south, the center-west, mountain ranges near the Tunisia-Algeria border, the south, and the northwest in its mapped security zones.
Southern and border travel gets separate treatment. Canada lists the area within 30 km of the Libya border as avoid-all-travel. Italy flags Ras Jedir and Ben Gardane for border restrictions and border crossings, and marks Kebili and Tataouine for heightened caution. New Zealand tells travelers to avoid non-essential travel south of and including Nefta, Douz, Médenine, and Zarzis.
City And Resort Trips
The inputs limit avoid-all-travel advice to specific parts of Tunisia. Canada, Australia, Ireland, and Japan all keep some form of elevated caution for Tunisia as a whole, mainly because of terrorism risk.
Italy specifically marks Tunis for heightened caution due to demonstrations. For a Tunis stay, the practical move is to monitor local instructions and avoid protest areas if they form.
Entry Rule To Recheck
France has a current “Dernières minutes” notice dated 2026-04-07 titled “Conditions d’entrée : passeport obligatoire pour tous les séjours en Tunisie.” Treat passport rules as a pre-departure check before going to the airport counter.
