Tropicana Hostel

BED BUGS, stayed one night and have been big bites all over my body. I also did the hike with them and my PS Vita (gaming console worth £100) was taken when I left all my valuable with them

Confirmed bedbug infestation. Spotted at least 6 bedbugs/carcasses in the room. I have over 10 bites, which severely impacted my stay. Despite the severity, the hostel failed to provide a room change or any basic medical supplies/ointments. Urgent action was not taken even though staff were staying in the same room. • Pros: Great location, friendly staff, towel rental available. • Cons: Serious pest issue, poor cleanliness, and lack of crisis management.

My time at Tropicana was very good, until my friend realised he was covered in BED BUG BITES. We worked it out that it had to be from Tropicana hostel, due to time frames. Very frustrating as he had no had to wash all clothes multiple times, purchase new bags etc

Amazing hostel! Beautiful pool in the middle, amazing rooftop terrace with a stunning view of Acatenango and Fuego! Unfortunately had bed bugs but only found out later in the trip. Aside from that, staff was amazing! Bathrooms are a little rough though

El hostel está lindo, bien ubicado y todo. Pero desafortunadamente había chinches de cama en mi cama. No ponen su maleta en la cama!! El personal fue muy amable conmigo y me mandaron mi ropa a la lavandería y me devolvieron el costo de la noche.

The beds in the dorm were so close together, my feet were touching the head of the person in front of me, many times over the night! Not cool! Also, my skin started hitching in the night (2nd reason that kept me up). I am not allergic to any bed material, so I guess they were bed bugs or similar :( Dorm was in front of the bar (they did say while booking), but the bar didnt close at 10 pm like expected, but at 10:30, so until that time it was very loud. BEDBUGS!!!! this place needs to be fumigated, I know multiple people who got bedbugs from here unfortunately. also not much of a party vibe beyond the staff trying to pressure you into buying a ticket for the antigua bar crawl

BED BUGS ALERT -If Your planning on doing the hike don’t stay here. So loud I couldn’t sleep I was shocked how bad it was. The pub crawl is a separate company you can even hang here on rooftop without staying here. Stay at another hostel and just book the hike through them. TRUST.

This stay was great-the hostel dorm we were meant to stay in had bedbugs so we were instantly upgraded to a private room. We also did the volcano tour with Tropicana and we didn’t have to arrange anything-they were very accommodating

Pretty sure they have bedbugs, I woke up in the middle of the night with three bug bites, thinking it was mosquitos but then sat there for an hour and suddenly more and more popped up. Same pattern as bedbugs. Bathrooms were very budget hostel bathrooms which is fine if that’s your vibe but had no where to set even your items unless on the ground of the shower. Just felt so gross after the bug incident.

Bedbugs - Jan 3 2025 Otherwise, an ok hostel. The curtains on the bed are nice. There could be more bathrooms/showers. The blasting music from the bar is pretty loud until 10/11. The volcano hike is ok, but with the amount it costs I expected more, sounds like other agencies are a better deal. My group was 40+ people which is way too big for a hike, the pace was slow and lots of breaks. Staff is nice though

Bed bugs! Please don't go here. The night before a 3 day hiking trip I was woken up with my bed covered in fat bed bugs and bites all over. I ended up sleeping outside in a hammock in december at 3 am. They gave me a partial refund and the showers didnt heat up that early (i tried 2 different ones in different parts of the hostel) so beware. Assigned bed D7.

Bed begs ! I got bed bug bites on my face and on my body. one bathroom for thirty people. never get any sleep here because most people who stay do the hike through Tropicana so everyone wakes up at 7 and goes outside the door and talks while the staff yells directions at them. If you wait to try and sleep when they leave at nine good luck. As soon as they leave the staff come into the room playing music on a speaker cleaning the room. Awful. You can’t go to sleep early, loud music goes to 11.

!!BED BUGS!! I was recommended this hostel mainly because of the hike which I hear is good, however, the rooms are awful… My friend and I both were bitten by bed bugs all over and I saw the staff did not properly clean or change the mattress so the next person who was in the bed I had also got bitten by bed bugs as well and had to leave. The hostel gave us a refund and a discount on a shuttle to lake atitlan, however, when we went to book the discounted travel they told us the shuttles were all cancelled because of flooding. We booked with the same shuttle company through a different hostel and it ended up being the exact same shuttle that was picking up people from Tropicana! Clearly they told us about flooding so they wouldn’t have to give us the discount. Highly disappointing. Would recommend staying elsewhere and booking the hike through them if you want.

Bedbugs, cockroaches in the rooms, huge rooms with no toilets. Maybe the worst hostel I’ve ever stayed in. The 15 bed room is rough - every morning you’ll be woken at 7am by everyone going to the hike. They stand outside the room for about an hour loudly chatting and getting organised (more often than not the door is wide open so you can’t sleep). There’s one toilet for the entire 15 bed room which is also used by the 14 bed room directly connected. I don’t know how there isn’t more than 1 toilet for about 30 people. It’s really hard to get sleep here so I’d recommend staying somewhere else if you want good rest and then doing the hike through Tropicana (as they are good at organising that). The attached photo is of a bed in the 15 bed room…Also they play very very loud music til 11pm every night - even if the bar is literally empty. They forced us to “check out” and then “check back in” the next day even though we paid for consecutive nights at the same time. Several people in our room found bedbugs and when they told the staff they did nothing about it - they said they cleaned but there were still bugs. Awful place In response to the comment by Tropicana - we were not refunded for our stay or the tour? Wish we had been! If you’d like to that would be great! They bribe you with watered down shots for good reviews which is the only reason this place has any stars btw!

I left shortly after being there. There were bed bugs in my bed/area, and in other beds. The facility has very few bathrooms for a lot of people (like 4 bathrooms). The rooms are triple bunks, and there is only a small cubby near your bed for your valuables. Definitely a party hostel if you enjoy that.

BED BUGS! Horrific place - do NOT stay here! Covered in bites after 1 night and when told reception they weren’t even surprised - clearly a serious problem. Guy checked into same bed after and got bites within 10 minutes after supposed ‘cleaning’. So irresponsible and awful. Promised a shuttle discount in “compensation” then they lied so couldn’t book it. They were also extremely rude when I was trying to leave :(. Positive reviews are false - don’t be fooled - they offer a free shot in exchange

Unfortunately got bed bugs at this hostel. At first staff member denied it, I was told I was wrong, that it must be a rash, something I ate, etc. Came back an hour later to find them fumigating my entire room without any notice. All my belongings had been stripped off my bed and left in a pile to be exposed to the chemicals. eventually the staff admitted that it was bed bugs, was very apologetic, and gave me a full refund which I do appreciate. Nice hostel but beware.

Overall a good hostel with kind and helpful staff but unfortunately my friends and I were bitten all over by bed bugs in the mixed 15 bed dorm

Pros: Fun atmosphere - easy to meet people and good. Clean showers. Great option is you are doing the trek. Cons: There seems to be a bed bug issue. I left the hostel covered in bites after two nights.

AWFUL. Party hostel my a**. We unknowingly came during election time so they couldn’t serve alcohol (which is fair enough) but for some reason that meant they basically shut the rest of the hostel down? They closed the rooftop area at 8pm and when playing cards at only 9pm in another area we constantly got told to keep it down and they sent us to our rooms at 10pm. The night before everyone was asleep for 8:30pm. My friend also got bed bugs. Awful, do not stay here

Got bedbugs from a private room. Hostel covered the whole thing up including bringing the infestation to Acatenango. Give this place a pass, they are just a tourist trap out to take your money. Have spent years on and off going to this place because of prime location but they just dont care about their customers at all. We are tequila cattle to them

Fine hostel but I found bed bugs in the dorm around 3am. I spent the night in a hammock during which it was pretty cold. I didnt really care because I assumed the night would be free. Nope. They gave me a 20q (3 dollar) discount on the dorm and couldn't do more because when I booked the room was already discounted from its usual price (what). So I got charged for a bed that I didnt use at all

i’ve never been here nor been to south america but i just now read a post a reddit that a guest found five bed bugs in the course of his stay (1 night) here so i wouldn’t go here.
