Mad Monkey Chiang Mai

Had bed bugs and stayed for 6 nights so received over 100 bites all over my body :( staff was really nice about it and apologetic. Unfortunate but not their fault.

Schlimmes Hostel! An der Rezeption sind sie unglaublich unfreundlich und wir hatten BETTWANZEN in unserem Bett!!!!! Als wir es gemeldet haben, haben wir zwar ein neues Zimmer bekommen aber es hat sie nicht wirklich gekümmert und das Bettwanzenbett war schon für den Nächsten hergerichtet!! Generell war das Hostel auch sehr laut, tagsüber und in der Nacht.

The overall experience was ok. However, WE HAD BED BUGS. We realised on the first night at 3am and had to change rooms. Me and my friend got two separate rooms and we didn’t feel comfortable in not being on the same one which was a shame. After having no sleep that night, we went to change rooms and the staff didn’t even apologise or offer a compensation which is a shame because the hostel atmosphere absolutely amazing and fun. If it wasn’t for that, it would have been a five star.

Bed Buggss!!!!we found big bed bugs in the middle of the night at each bed and went to reception. They first accepted it but than another coworker gaslighted us that‘s not a bed bug. It was, we are not dumb. The said they will clean all of our stuff for us bc „mentally we believe they are bed bugs“… do they really think we are dumb?? After „cleaning“ my luggage I still found one so… i spend 2 days gettinf rid of them, be careful guys. Never never again

FULL OF BED BUGS! I was given 3 different bads, yet none of them were clean! I had booked for 2 nights, but slept outside on the banks on the first night. Couldn't leave bc my friend was asleep and severely sick. In the morning, they said they would only refund me one night. I had to call for the manager and be a Karen. I suppose he didn't speak English bc he didn't even look at me, and then they refund me the whole money. Terrible service.

Had a pretty good experience here. The location, vibes, the activities were all nice. The only thing is, I saw a bed bug on my last night but was not able to find it again so didn’t say anything, which was my choice. Compared to some of the hostels I stayed at, it wasn’t the cleanest, but the receptionists were all very nice.

8 of my friends stayed at Mad Monkey in Chiang Mai and unfortunately we had a terrible experience. Despite the staff assuring us the room was deep cleaned due to past complaints about bed bugs, I woke up at 4 AM with a live bed bug on my arm. I had to throw out clothing and immediately leave the hostel to book emergency accommodation in the middle of the night. If you’re backpacking or traveling, I’d strongly advise against staying here until they’ve proven the issue is truly resolved. This was not just unpleasant — it was a real health and safety concern. Avoid until further notice. ROOM 201 and ROOM 202

Filled with bed bugs in the room and the state of their bedsheets and linen is horrendous, the staff and the vibe is nice n all but good luck getting a good night’s sleep with shitty linen and bugs

Nos quedamos varios días, y hasta extendimos, sin embargo la habitación que nos tocó estaba llena de BEDBUGS, nos dijeron que nos iban a hacer el refund, pero habitación pasado casi una semana y no nos contestaron con el comprobante. Lo único bueno fue se hicieron cargo de la limpieza de la ropa que se llenó de bichos. Además, no tienen cocina comunitaria ni lugar para comer algo en caso de que quisieras comprar afuera.

I personally had a great stay here. Met people and made memories I’ll remember for life. The tours they run are great, and I could stay here for a longer time than I did (4 nights total). The reason I don’t give 5 stars is someone I met in my dorm said he had bed bugs. In saying that though, they were very accommodating for him and gave a free room upgrade + rid his clothes of bed bugs with no extra charge. Just want to give a big shout out to Nam (one of the full time reps) for her service here. She was interested in everyone that walked through the door and got everyone involved in whatever was going on that night, making it easy to meet new people.

We were here 5 nights, our first night we had bed bugs. The staff were very nice and moved us immediately and offered us free washing the next day. However, we had to move in the middle of the night at 2am, and they didn’t offer us any sort of discount for the inconvenience at the end of our stay. We also misplaced our room key, which we said must’ve got mixed up in our washing because we searched the room so we didn’t get our room deposit back, despite making no fuss about the bed bugs.

We were supposed to stay for 3 nights but after waking up from night 1, we noticed there were bed bugs.

Good hostel, very party as expected. Location was great, a walk to all night markets. Could book lots of experiences through it. I never had a problem with bed bugs but i know a lot of people that did

Terrible experience at the Mad Monkey. We had booked three nights to spend Songkran in Chiang Mai. When we got home in the evening after going out, we discovered that our beds were infested with bedbugs. I checked with our room-mates: it was the same for them. We all decided to leave the room. It was 1.30am. We asked for a fallback solution and they offered to move us to another room for the night. However, as the hostel was full for Songkran, we were told that we would have to return to the same infected room the next day. ‘Don't worry, we'll clean the room thoroughly tonight, and tomorrow it will be clean’. Two of our roomates accepted the change of room and once again found bed bugs in their new beds. Staying overnight in these conditions was out of the question. We finally asked for a refund, which was accepted (the least they could do!). No help in finding an alternative hotel, and no financial compensation offered either. So there we were, two girls on the street at 2.30am. It's a good thing we're resourceful...

Good location and facilities. Great social areas, however we had an infestation of BED BUGS in our room. They were HUGE!!!! Staff didn’t apologise and appeared to make no efforts to rid the room of the bugs, or seemed to care. We did get moved into a different room but no apology. I really hope they are taking steps to rid them!!Overall ruined our stay here.

The worst mad monkey experience of my trip so far, and this is my 5th one. Considering it was during Songkran there was minimal events running and little life, in comparison to other mad monkeys I have stayed in. There was bedbugs that weren’t sorted until two nights after, and the whole room left! Besides the staff who were nice and helpful, this was really a disappointing one, and for so much money!

BED BUGS! During my stay multiple dorms were infested with bedbugs, including mine. In other responses, the hostel claims they have a ‘procedure’ to eradicate them - this certainly wasn’t the case when I was there. In fact, they couldn’t tell me what this procedure was when I asked. Any hostel can have bedbugs but I have never stayed in a hostel that did so little to address the situation. Many of the staff and reps were friendly and I met good people. They just need to control the bedbugs. 🪳

Great location and nice set up. Big common area and swimming pool with a reception and travel desk. However, some areas are slightly run down + my room we infested with bed bugs. Came out with hundreds of bites + my friend also had the same issue the next week. This is most likely a known problem and needs to be addressed for future travellers.

Der var bedbug allesteder på 12persons værelset. De var i dynen, madrassen, i hjørner af væggene og rundt allesteder. De billeder er 5 forskellige bedbug kun fra en seng, de andre 2 senge havde også bedbugs. Min ven blev bit som på billedet mere en 20+ gange på arme og ben. Personalet skiftede bare lagerne men det virkede selvfølgelig ikke. Vi spurgte om bugspray og om de kunne dræbe dem men det sagde de at de ikke kunne. Så vi måtte købe det selv. Vi fik så tilbudt at skifte værelse men der var bedbugs også inde. Personalet tog os ikke alvorlige, så vi måtte tjekke ud 2nætter før. Personalet gav os bare depositum og sagde farvel. Meget kedelig oplevelse:(

Bedbugs. Paper thin walls. If you’re boring like me its not for you

The room was completely infested in bed bugs, i slept there 4 hours and my body was covered. Staff agreed to make us change rooms in the middle of the night, but we changed twice and the three rooms were infested. I’m used to party hostels and lots of noise, but i’ve never seen anyone scream this much while coming back from the bar. The facilities are old and aren’t really clean. However, the atmosphere was good!

Avoid this hostel at all costs! Our entire room was infested with bedbugs, and the staff did nothing about it. At 3 AM, drunk guests scream, slam doors, and even work out in the gym with a lot of noice—no staff intervention. Food is terrible, staff barely speaks English, and activities are poorly run. Rooms aren’t locked properly, facilities are dirty and outdated, and there’s no hot water working in the showers. Worst hostel experience ever—stay elsewhere!

The hostel is badly infested with bed bugs. Even the towel they gave me had bed bugs on it. When I reported to the staff that I found bed bugs on my bed and other beds in room 204, they didn't seem bothered about it. I was there for four hours and was covered in bite marks. I had to check out and find a new hotel at 2:00 a.m. My belongings were covered in bed bugs, so I had to go to the laundromat and wash and dry my things at high heat to prevent taking them to other hostels at 5:00 a.m. This ruined my first night's experience in Chiang Mai. The female bathroom was also absolutely disgusting. It had a pungent smell of mold, and there was visible mold on the walls and ceilings.

My stay at Mad Monkey Chiang Mai was a nightmare due to a serious bed bug infestation that the staff failed to address. We found bed bugs in two different rooms, and other guests experienced the same. Despite video evidence, the staff dismissed our concerns, claiming they were 'light bugs' and refused a refund. The poorly maintained facilities added to the awful experience. I would not recommend this hostel to anyone due to their lack of cleanliness and disregard for guest well-being.

Couldn’t get checked in until 4pm. Lots of cleaners in our room before we checked in. Then we realised it was because we had bed bugs in the room. Said to the staff and they moved us from a 6-bed to a 12-bed. Other than that the hostel was decent.

Ich hatte Bettwanzen in meinem Bett, weswegen ich in ein anderes, größeres Dorm musste. In dem neuen Dorm wusste ich natürlich auch nicht, ob dort auch Bettwanzen sind. Die Duschen wurden sich mit dem gesamten Gang geteilt, wovon 1 von 3 nur kaltes Wasser hatte. Grundsätzlich waren aber die Leute sehr nett und die Ausflüge sehr gut.

Lovely staff, a great pool, they book lots of activities and host lots of events. There are always free shots on the go and the reps are really fun. I saw a bed bug in my bed, I told reception and they offered me a spray initially before I asked that I could change rooms. I still stayed for my whole booking because the staff and atmosphere was lovely, a great place to make friends, but the lack of action taken on the bedbugs was disturbing and it could have been a lot cleaner.

The hostel had bed bugs and the bathrooms were dirty with no water for 5 hours on our first day. But the staff were nice and the people were friendly, good activities and nights out.
