I stayed at the Generator DC at the beginning of August for 3 days. The hotel itself has a modern style, and the staff I interacted with were friendly and welcoming, which made me want to enjoy my stay. Unfortunately, my experience was affected by a few serious concerns. On the 7th floor, there was a consistent mold smell noticeable each time I stepped off the elevator or left my room. It raised some concerns for me around the overall air quality. More troubling were the bites I discovered after my second night. I woke up with several red, itchy welts around my ankles. At first, I assumed they were mosquito bites — DC’s humidity tends to make mosquitoes more active, and I usually attract them — but when additional bites appeared the next morning, I knew something else was happening. After returning home, the bites became inflamed, so I visited a dermatologist, who confirmed they were bedbug bites. Since this was my first time encountering bedbugs, I didn’t recognize the signs immediately. I contacted Generator DC’s management and staff by email, including photos with dates and times when the bites appeared, but I haven’t received any response. It has now been weeks since my stay, and I still have not received any follow-up. This is especially concerning because bedbugs are a serious issue — they can spread easily through clothing, luggage, and furniture, creating problems that extend far beyond a single hotel room. While I appreciated the friendliness of the staff and the look of the hotel, the mold on the 7th floor and confirmed bedbug bites made my stay difficult. I hope management takes urgent steps to address these issues and to improve communication with guests, as these problems can have lasting impacts well after checkout.

Very meh. This is supposedly some sort of hipster, upscale hotel. It's acceptable, and that's about it. The room size is fine, it's clean, it's kept up well, there were no bedbugs. So that should get you three stars. But I gave it two. Why? Upon walking in the door and registering, they hit us with some sort of $250 facility fee charge for a week's stay. We had prepaid for this room on super.com. Super.com specifically stated that that would cover everything. Apparently, it didn't. Obviously, standing with our bags at the registration counter, we weren't exactly in a position to say no. Because of all the many little things that weren't right. You might call these petty annoyances. But when you have enough of these, they stop being so petty. There's a mini-fridge in the room, but no microwave. So, you're eating takeout or you're getting doggie bags at the restaurant - because, you know, you're in a hotel room and can't cook - and then you want to warm that something back up the next day? Too bad, so sad. Instead of spending $50 on a microwave for every room, the instead chose to have an iron and ironing board. Poor choice. Think I'll sit down and have a bite to eat of some of that cold food. But what's this? Only one chair in the room? And no table? That means that one of you has to eat in bed, thus proving the aphorism, "I wouldn't throw her out of bed for eating crackers." Because there's gonna be plenty of crumbs in the bed. Gee, after eating that cold food, I'm thirsty. But, you guessed it, there are no cups in the room. Gotta bring your own. How about putting some ice in those cups you brought? Well, there are some ice makers - not on every floor, mind you. But there's no ice bucket. Good luck catching that torrent of ice into a little cup - or the mouth of your water bottle. After all that eating and drinking, it's time to go to the bathroom. Well, there's a vent, but no fan in the bathroom. Now it's kinda stinky in there. Better let that air out for 20 minutes -right back into the bedroom - before going in. Oh wait, so there's no fan? That means that you get a bonus - mold. What a nice surprise for those that are allergic - a nice sneezing fit every time you use the bathroom. Lovely. Okay, I've eaten my cold food, I've drank my tepid water, and I've taken care of business. Now it's time to sit down and get to work. Hmmm, there's no desk chair. Just a padded stool. That's pretty low to the floor. But here's the worst of it. There's no light in the room. Oh, there are light fixtures, lamps - four, count'em, four of them. Two night stand lamps, an overhead lamp, and a free-standing lamp. But even when you put all of these on, and turn on the closet lamp and the bathroom lamp, it's very dim in there. So dim, that when I called up to complain about the lighting, they already knew about this, and were quick to bring up another couple of free-standing lamps to the room - that they just happened to have in reserve in case anyone complains. Even with the extra light, from those lamps, it was the room was still barely lit. I had to swap out a lightbulb from the hallway into one of the nightstand lamps to get it acceptable. This is no way to run a hotel. What a crock.

This has been a terrible experience! One of the worst ones in my life! I've been in many hostels throughout Europe, this was my first time in America. On the second night I got some bites on my legs, roughly 15 of them. At first, I though it was a mosquito, so I told the reception and they sprayed the room. No one else in the room (of four people) had any bites at all (I asked them). The next night, I already had roughly 30 bites on my body, mostly legs. It itched so badly I couldn't sleep and the bites were waking me up. I found some weird stains on the sheet and a little mark of fresh blood on the sheets - all marks of bed bugs (I even made photos of everything). At 4:30 am or so, I went to the reception to complain and they gave me another bed, which was fine. When I came back to my room in the morning, I asked my roommates if they had any bites - no one had any. If it was a mosquito, other people would have bites too, plus the stains, the blood, and also the amount of bites (according to the internet, a mosquito doesn't create 30 bites over two nights). I complained at the reception and demanded my money back, they told me I'd be contacted by their management. It's been a week and so far no one has contacted me. I'm giving them a few more days and then I'm contacting health inspection, because this is unbelievable. I'm from Europe and this is a kind of behavior you'd expect in the cheapest hostel... Edit: Of course they say that they didn't find any bugs, so here are some photos as proof (stains on the sheets, the fresh blood stain, some of the bites on my legs - both of my legs were all covered in those). It's interesting that they responded to my review immediately, but although the receptionist promised they'd contact me to resolve the issue, after more than a week no one did. She just lied to my face so I wouldn't make a scene there and then. I decided to file a complaint with the Washington health inspection, and also contact booking.com.

The interior is well designed. The staff is friendly. The lighting in the room is AWFUL. Skip below for more on lighting. The bed does NOT have a top sheet which makes me concerned about how dirty the comforter cover is. Unless they wash the duvet cover after every stay, it’s absolutely dirty since they don’t cover the beds with a top sheet. My skin is sensitive to dust mites and any other kind of small bug that might be on bedding and I did get some bites through the night. Not bed bugs so likely dust mites from not washing the duvet or comforter enough. Whoever did the decor put a demonic painting in my room and I literally had trouble sleeping. I never do. I has to anoint my hotel room and listen to a sermon to get me to sleep. I am usually a very easy sleeper and I never have issues with timezone changes from West Coast to East Coast. Having a painting of a third eye opens a spiritual gateway to the demonic over you while you sleep. The owner and operator should consider removing those paintings so guests can sleep peacefully. The air conditioner is not working in my room. Even after following every instruction. More on lighting: Even with every lamp and TV on, and bathroom lights on, I can barely see my laptop screen or read a book. Do not stay here if you want to work from your room unless it’s during the day using daylight. The lobby is very noisy either with loud music or loud guests. The lobby also isn’t a good place to work. Otherwise great furniture design and layout in the room. They also offered two complimentary bottles of water.

Aside from the location - would not recommend. We discovered our legs covered in bed bug bites this morning despite the bed bug solution cover they apparently have. Staff was kind but do not recommend staying here if you want a clean, consistent stay.
