Really nice place, not too social but good location however there is a big BEDBUG problem which would need to be addressed properly.

Had to switch rooms bc they’re letting a girl stay there that was a literal tweaker and was throwing around loose threats and implying I’m carrying a gun bc I’m American. After I switched to my new room they informed me they had bed bugs in there and that I needed to switch rooms again. Didn’t feel comfy staying there at that point so asked for a refund for the rest of my stay and they said no, all they could do was pay for my laundry. Other staff told me there’s bed bugs through many more rooms

Just a shame

I recently traveled from Korea to Australia and stayed at this hostel for two nights. During my stay, I woke up each morning with severe itching and multiple bite marks on my arm. I visited a pharmacy and was told that these were bedbug bites. I have since made a medical appointment to further treat the issue. I informed the hostel staff, but they denied responsibility. While they offered to change my room, they refused to provide a refund. The itching has been extremely uncomfortable, and the swelling has worsened, making it nearly impossible to sleep. I spent both nights in distress and fear of being bitten again. I would like to leave the hostel as soon as possible, but my request for a refund has not been accepted. I believe a refund is fair and necessary due to the health risks and discomfort I’ve experienced, which were completely beyond my control.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS – SCAM If you’re looking for a place where you’re treated like nothing more than a walking wallet, Summer House Melbourne is perfect for you. Otherwise, stay far away. I booked a full week at this hostel, paid in advance, and after staying three nights, they kicked me out. Why? Because I had an e-bike battery with me—apparently a crime worthy of immediate expulsion. Funny thing is, I was never informed of this rule before my arrival. Why this hostel is an absolute disgrace: 1. They take your money and throw you out without hesitation. No refund, no discussion. You’ve paid? Too bad for you. 2. Their rules are unclear and misleading. Nowhere on their website was this battery ban mentioned. Had I known, I would’ve booked elsewhere. 3. Their customer service is nonexistent. No alternative solutions, no refund, no attempt at resolving the issue—just a cold, heartless “leave.” 4. The hostel itself is a nightmare. • Tiny, poorly insulated rooms with zero privacy. • Mattresses as comfortable as concrete slabs. • Bedbugs on the first floor (the staff doesn’t care). • Mice running around in the kitchen. • A rooftop bar that looks completely abandoned. Simply put, Summer House Melbourne is a scam. They only care about taking your money, not about their guests. My advice? Stay anywhere else—literally anywhere will be better.

THEY ONLY WANT YOUR MONEY I would like to share my extremely disappointing experience at Summer House Melbourne. On March, I booked a shared room for a week, paying $350 in advance. Upon arrival, I dropped off my belongings and, while waiting for check-in, took my bike battery for a ride. However, the moment I left the hostel, the manager informed me that the possession of batteries was strictly prohibited in the establishment, telling me that I had to leave the hostel immediately, without any refund. Here are the reasons why this situation is unacceptable: 1. I was not clearly or explicitly informed upon booking that batteries were prohibited. 2. I paid $350 for a service I was unable to use, given that I wasn't even given access to the room. 3. I was not offered any alternative means of safely storing my battery. 4. No solution was considered to help me find alternative accommodation, despite the difficulty of finding available hostels in Melbourne at the time. 5. I was evicted without any possibility of resolving the situation amicably. 6. A warning would have been enough I had already booked a night a few weeks before. And I noticed other problems. The walls are not soundproof and the rooms offer no privacy. Some mattresses are hard as rocks. There are bedbugs on the first floor and mice in the kitchen but they do nothing despite complaints. The bar on the 4th floor is abandoned. This experience was not only frustrating but also extremely unfair. The lack of communication and support from the staff left me with no recourse. I absolutely do not recommend this hostel, especially if you expect decent customer service.

DO NOT STAY HERE – BEDBUG INFESTATION & ZERO ACCOUNTABILITY! My stay at Summerhouse Hostel in Melbourne was an absolute disaster. This place is infested with bedbugs, and the staff couldn’t care less about their guests’ well-being. After waking up covered in itchy, painful bites, I immediately reported the issue to staff. Instead of moving me to a different room, they simply washed my sheets and clothes—but left me in the same bed. Unsurprisingly, I woke up the next morning with even more bites, making my stay unbearable. When I asked to file an injury report, I was brushed off and told to come back when a manager was available. Meanwhile, I had to spend $27 on pharmacy treatments and was advised that a doctor’s visit would cost me another $100—an expense I couldn’t afford. Even after staff confirmed that my bites were from bedbugs, they still refused to move me, offering nothing but fresh sheets and towels instead. I sent a formal complaint outlining the physical, emotional, and financial toll this took on me, but they ignored me completely. No refund, no compensation, not even a response. This level of negligence is unacceptable and a clear violation of Australian Consumer Law. Summerhouse Hostel is an absolute disgrace. If you value your health, sanity, and money, STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE. I’ll be escalating my complaint to Consumer Affairs Victoria and health authorities so no one else has to go through this.

Was here for 2 weeks - there were 4 separate cases of bed bugs around the hostel, fine this stuff happens but the staff were very unhelpful and were more interested In fixing it quietly than helping us - no communication - was given a $10 bar tab, nice hostel and atmosphere but not worth it at all

The management here was very unwelcoming. After staying for a couple of weeks my friends and I could tell that the managers had a very clear preference for the people (especially girls) that were blonde and German, something that was very clear with who they allowed to do volunteer in the facility, and how interested the manager was in actually wanting to help you as a guest. Just very condescending and mean spirited management all around, with a weird discriminatory vibes. And the rumours are true, the place is infested with bed bugs, cockroaches and mice! I couldn’t eat in the bar attached to the hostel after I saw a mouse run out of the kitchen. And when you go to the desk to ask for help about the beg bug situation, again the management is less than co-operative or sympathetic with the situation. Honestly hear too many stories with people with the same opinion to not post on the website.

- Rooms are very dirty. Especially when the guys live there permanently. - Some tenants do not close doors when go to toilet, do not flush. One dude had a dump in 114 and did not flush. So, the "quality" of tenants is low. - It seems that my bed sheets had ticks or bed bugs. I had rash on my leg the next day after checking in.

terrible experience!!!! Stayed there for three weeks total. The Hostel has no social area and the kitchen is not nearly big enough to fit everyone in it. Annoying but okay. What really through me off was the fact that the hostel has bedbugs and nobody even cares about it! The owner ignored the bedbugs and was really rude to me. And even after i could proof her that there are bedbugs she let me sleep in that bed since „there was no other available bed “. Once I finally left they immediately put somebody new into the bed without even trying to get rid of the bedbugs. Don’t waste your money on staying there!

Hostel is in a good location in st kilda and I found it easy to meet people because of the social events they had on. The major con is that there are bedbugs here! When I told staff though, they seemed to take it serious and said they would clean the area thoroughly
