Unfortunately the male owner gave us a very unfriendly welcome. The thing about working in hospitality is you should create a warm environment, you don’t know where people are coming from and they should feel at home while staying with you. We just had a dangerous journey and arrived in the dark very shook up, so a cold reception was the last thing we needed. I kinda gave up after that. You can cook. There’s no atmosphere. There’s bed & breakfasts in the area, support the community instead...
We left two days early because we didn’t feel safe. Our room was near an unmonitored back gate and the door was flimsy, so anyone could have got in at any time, with no lockers to secure our belongings (private room). Facilities, particularly the bathrooms, are rustic at best. They charge for drinking water. Staff seem to be doing their best but the place has been for sale for a while, which tells you everything you need to know. 100% would not recommend for solo female travellers in particula...
Could be great, but several things made us leave the property a day early for an AirBnb across the street… - Staff are rude, not wanting to help and Ray is belittling in his manner. Don’t bother disturbing him. - Temperature in rooms unbearable due to no AC/ineffective fans and thick foam on top of every mattress. Extremely uncomfortable. - Rooms generally poor, sheets stained, no privacy curtains, stiff and heavy lockers. Kitchen needs an overhaul. It’s up for sale - explains a lot...
I would prefer an age minimum and maximum for a hostel, there were loads of kids and people > 65 in the hostel/dorms
The hostel is starting to be old, it's not very clean. Some of the beds are really uncomfortable, you could feel every single spring and there was a terrible strong smell in the dorm.

Pas eu d'eau chaude en 4 jours, avec un chauffe-eau solaire de 50L pour 12 à 25 personnes, c'etait prévisible. Les chasses d'eau sont cassées pour la plupart, les sièges de jardin sont vieillots, les ustensiles de cuisine, telle la passoire, trouée, les peintures écaillées.
The boss doesn't like the customers or his establishment, which is falling into ruins. Full filling and promiscuous elsewhere but no investment in return. No hot water in 4 days, with a 50L solar water heater for 12 to 25 people, it was predictable. The water taps are mostly broken, the garden chairs are old, the kitchen utensils, such as the step, hole, the paint scaled.
It’s quite sad that this is the only hostel in Hopkins, because travelling on a budget kind of means that you have to stay here. The staff was unhelpful and just a bit rude. The room was not clean; there were nails next to my bed. Not social and nowhere to sit when it rains, except for the dorms. Also not really social. And DON’T believe the owner telling you that you can drink the tap water. I got food poisoning and was so sick. They didn’t even bother to help. He takes purified water h...
Ich wollte unbedingt die Glühwürmchen sehen in der Anderson Lagune. Die Frau an der Reception hat mich angelogen und gesagt, die kann man nur nach Vollmond sehen. Fand im nachhinein heraus, dass das nicht stimmt. Habe 3 Nächte gebucht und bezahlt. Weil es mir nicht gefiel dort, wollte ich die dritte Nacht an 2 Backpackers weitergeben. das war nicht möglich. In meinem Privatraum konnte ich jedes Geräusch hören und es bebte, wenn jemand im Nebenraum die Türe schloss.
I really wanted to see the fireflies in Anderson Lagoon. The lady at the reception lied to me and said that you can only see them after Vollmond. I found out later that this is not true. I booked 3 nights and paid for them. Because I didn't like it there, I wanted to pass the third night on to 2 backpackers. that was not possible. In my private room I could hear every noise and it was drunk when someone in the next room closed the door.
Lovely hostel, nice garden area, free coffee, comfy beds, however the rooms can get unbearably hot with just a fan! Pretty expensive for what it is aswell
Las habitaciones compartidas son muy pequeñas, entre mochilas y carry on, no queda espacio. El personal es atento y correcto. Tienen agua caliente. Hopkins en gral está sobre valuados en relación calidad-precio, comparado con los otros alojamientos el precio es razonable. La playa está llena de sargazos, y el olor se hace difícil de soportar.
The shared rooms are very small, between backpacks and carry on, no space left. The staff is attentive and correct. They have hot water. Hopkins in gral is overrated in quality-to-price ratio, compared to the other accommodations the price is reasonable. The beach is full of sargasso, and the smell becomes difficult to bear.

Great social hostel in the middle of Hopkins. You can reach either end of town in about a 20 minute walk (or hitchhike, it's very easy around here). However, most restaurants and places are very close by. The people at reception will help you out with anything and even offered us to try some exotic fruits he was eating (I believe his name was Clifton). I didn't have a lot to do in Hopkins due to the Sargassum, but still managed to fill my days with activies due to the social nature of the hostel
I had an amazing time at The Dodo, the people are so nice and helpful and the facilities are great! Thank you for everything.
I had a great stay at this hostel. It’s a little old fashioned but in a nice way. I would highly recommend this hostel.
mon coup de coeur des 3 hôtels que j'ai faits à belize. Chambre privée certes mais douche sanitaires communs entretenus. Y'a même de l'eau chaude! Café à volonté le matin tant qu'il y en a. Et je vous souhaite d'y rencontrer Cleavon toujours souriant, disponible et de très bon conseil. Encore merci mon ami
My favorite of the 3 hotels I have stayed in Belize. Private room of course but shared shower facilities maintained. There is even hot water! Coffee at will in the morning while there are still. And I wish you to meet Cleavon there always smiling, available and very good advice. Thank you again my friend

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Funky Dodo. It’s definitely more of an older crowd that stays there (or it was during my stay) which made for a chill relaxing vibe. But definitely not a party spot if that’s what you’re looking for. Clevon at the front desk was the most polite and helpful person I’ve interacted with in a long time! He went well above and beyond with help booking tours and recommending activities and transportation around Hopkins. Highly recommended.

Anna & Roy war super nett und extrem hilfsbereit. Die Lage ist super, man ist sehr zentral und sehr nah am Strand. Die Zimmer sind sehr sauber. Allerdings lassen die Sanitäranlagen und die Küche sehr zu wünschen übrig.
Anna & Roy were super nice and extremely helpful. the location is great, you are very central and very close to the beach. the rooms are very clean. however the plumbing and kitchen leave much to be desired.
Funky Dodo is fantastic! As someone who has stayed in a lot of hostel dorms (and who is getting too old for top bunks), I really appreciated how intentionally designed the dorm beds were. I was on top but it's a real staircase with a sturdy railing with curtain, and a very comfy mattress. The shelf and outlets were super useful, and I loved having my own reading light and fan. The fan meant I could take a break from earplugs. I loved the giant locker drawers to keep stuff in, it made it easy to ...
We enjoyed our stay. The atmosphere was excellent, wonderful proximity to the beach. The WiFi could be improved.
hostel was good for a couple night's stay! staff were helpful with booking us a taxi. decent kitchen, showers and toilets are also decent but a bit cold as they use solar panels for heat. location was okay! there's an older man that was there during our stay that seemed to be a semi permanent resident which was quite off putting tbh- he sat in the same spot in front of the dorm we were in watching trump youtube videos and smoking his pipe which smelled quite bad
I liked this hostel but I didn’t like the older American guy who’s been staying there for the last three winters walking and talking like he owns the place. Other than that, great place, thanks for a nice stay
Loved this place. Atmosphere is what you make of it - plenty of opportunities to chat with guests. The property grounds are well landscaped. Legit 50 ft from the beach and at the center of the village. It’s also quite eco friendly and uses solar power and collects rain water if you are into that.
Very good hostel. Sustainable facilities and nicely decorated. It looked way better than on the pictures.
A lovely hostel in a quiet beach paradise. Definitely stay here if you visit Hopkins Pros: - comfy, clean rooms and beds - friendly helpful owners and staff. We asked about the bioluminescence tour and received expert advice from the owner - convenient Central location in Hopkins Wishes: - it would be ideal if the WiFi reached the rooms - during our stay there seemed to be an abundance of ever-present middle aged Omni-shirtless men, but fair enough I suppose we are in the carribean.
The Funky Dodo is a classic hostel that gets a lot right. It has a very social hangout space with the kitchen/lounge area, so it was easy to meet new people (partly because the wifi is NOT good in the rooms...it forces people out into the common areas). The kitchen was well-equipped and the staff kept it neat and organized (because guests can always do better). The communal bathrooms were also well arranged and clean. It is rustic with solar hot water (so showers are not always hot).
