Mad Monkey Hostel Siargao

BED BUGS IN HOSTEL On our third night, our group was told that our room was infested with bed bugs. One of my friends ended up with around 25 bites. To make matters worse, some of our other friends had already moved out of their room earlier in the week due to strong paint fumes, as at least three rooms were undergoing construction at the time. At around 5pm, we returned to our room to find a Post-it note on our beds asking us to go to reception. That’s when we were informed about the bed bugs. Two out of the five of us decided to stay, while the other three tried to find alternative accommodation. The staff repeatedly told us there were “loads of hostels” around the island we could move to, but they didn’t offer to help us find any- and even laughed when we explained we were struggling to book somewhere last minute. After being declined by two Airbnbs because it was too late in the evening, we were forced to book a much more expensive Airbnb. The hostel offered us a refund for the current night and the following two nights we were due to stay. However, this was only refunded at their “nightly rate,” which was significantly less than what we had originally paid. They did wash our clothes for free to remove any bugs or eggs and offered one free meal each, but overall the situation was handled very poorly. As girls travelling, we were made to feel small and dismissed rather than supported. The friend who had been badly bitten was initially promised a full refund, but in the end was only offered one additional night refunded beyond the three nights the rest of us received. The two girls who chose to stay had their own issues. Not only were they not refunded, but they were also forced to share a bed due to lack of space. The morning after the bed bug incident, they were moved rooms because of overbooking and were placed in the same room our friends had previously left due to paint fumes. That night, they found wood mites in their beds. After reporting it and leaving the room, they later returned to find someone else had been moved into the same infested bed, seemingly without being informed. When this was raised, staff acted confused and suggested maybe we just got the rooms confused. It’s unfortunate because the hostel’s social atmosphere was good, and the food and drinks were enjoyable. However, the condition of the rooms, the strong sewage smell, ongoing construction and the dismissive handling of serious hygiene concerns made this a very disappointing and upsetting experience overall. Would not recommend.

BEDBUGS BEDBUGS BEDBUGS en nog eens BEDBUGS…. Ze zijn op de hoogte van het probleem maar het enige dat ze doen is ontsmetten met ontsmetting spray. 🫣🫣🫣🫣🫣 Het zit in het hout van de bedden, muren spleten, matrassen, enz.. Please don’t stay here!!!!!!

My bed had bedbugs, but they were so nice about it and moved everyone in the same dorm to a new one!

There were numerous rooms infected with bed bugs and when management were made aware of this they said they’d just change the sheets - As if that will get rid of them. They also attempted to move a male into an all female dorm at 2 in the morning, Turning on all the lights and being very loud - waking up all the girls sleeping at that time, because of the lack of beds due to the bed bugs infestation. I wouldn’t stay here there’s plenty of better hostels for cheaper and in a better location.

I stayed in October of 2025 and there was a significant problem with bedbugs. Multiple rooms has them and people got shuffled around trying to get away. The staff weren’t too helpful about it and tried to downplay the seriousness of the situation, but the manager sorted it out the next day. They didn’t consider it a significant problem, but we were all very concerned about finding them in beds and leaving with them in our bags.

Bed bugs! Had to move rooms twice for bed bugs. At first they only offered to change the sheets, eventually they moved us. Also, female bar staff were very rude, they had no change so asked if I could just pay extra - crazy

Eerste instantie werden we al niet bij elkaar in een dorm gezet. Kan gebeuren en zouden de volgende dag wel bij elkaar kunnen slapen. Dag erna hoorde we dat er bed bugs in die dorm waren gevonden. We werden verplaatst naar een andere dorm. Hier hebben we 4 nachten geslapen en in de laatste nacht hebben we weer 3 bed bugs gezien. Het is een groot hostel die veel leuke dingen organiseren. Maar wat betreft die vieze beesten, vind ik dat het niet goed wordt aangepakt…. Heel zonde ):

Really disappointed with the reputation of mad monkey always being the best place to go for drinks and a good vibe, but here the showers were very weak and cold, sand everywhere, some guests told me about bed bugs in their room, the bar never had change so a beer would be 109 pesos and you give 120 pesos and they wouldn't give change back and just said we will remove it from your last drink but they never do. And the atmosphere was frankly mid for a drinking hostel culture.

We recently stayed here for 1 week. The week started okay. The staff were nice and the rooms were decent. Special shoutout to Edwin and King, they were both really sound. However on day 3, everything changed. We found multiple bed bugs in our room (photo attached) and two of our party had bites on them. We also have reason to believe they were aware of the bed bugs as when we arrived we were told our room was ‘under maitanence’. This was also told to the other lads in our room after we made it clear there was bed bugs in the room. If they was willing to lie once I can only assume they lied to us when we arrived. I don’t appreciate being lied to and this is just pure negligence. Bed bugs are a serious issue and should be treated appropriately. We were then moved to another dorm. We also found bed bugs in this dorm. At this point we asked to move rooms again. We were placed in a guesthouse off-site. We were placed in a double room with a mattress on the floor (find photo attached). If I wanted to sleep on the floor I would have paid for mattress on the floor and not a dorm at mad monkey. The manager didn’t even have the balls to speak to us when we demanded compensation. No compensation was given apart from a free meal and a free clothes wash which we had to bargain for. We wasted a lot of time during this ordeal and it made the stay awkward and uncomfortable. We wasn’t even aloud to take our bags to the new accomadation as they feared bed bugs may be on them. I’ve stayed at a lot of mad monkeys however after this experience I will not be staying at a another. It was also almost impossible to get a hot shower in the evening. The water would be turned off for hours at a time. The food was good, however stingy portions. Also, 100 pesos every time I want to play darts. Childish. Siagrao was amazing. I just wouldn’t recommend staying at this mad monkey.
