Central African Republic is under avoid-all-travel advice from 11 governments as of 2026-05-15. The latest update reviewed here is Germany’s 2026-05-14 travel warning; current advisories cite unstable security, armed groups, violent crime, road disruption, airport disruption risk, and possible fighting in or near Bangui.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid all travel to Central African Republic. If you are already there, check your own government’s latest advice, monitor local instructions, and expect road movement to change quickly because advisories cite armed activity, crime, curfews, checkpoints, improvised explosive attacks, and route blockages.

Do not treat Bangui as cleared for normal travel. The UK advisory is narrower than most: it advises against all travel to the whole country except Bangui, then advises against all but essential travel to Bangui, including Bangui M’Poko International Airport.

Where exactly this applies
  • Most current advisories reviewed here apply nationwide to Central African Republic.
  • Germany cites volatile nationwide security, armed fighting, increasing improvised explosive attacks including on major roads, displacement, possible renewed fighting in Bangui, arbitrary arrests, airport disruption risk, curfews outside Bangui, and blockages on the Douala-Bangui route.
  • France uses red and orange security zones, with risks tied to political and military instability, criminality, and road travel.
  • The UK excludes Bangui from its whole-country “against all travel” wording, but still advises against all but essential travel to Bangui and Bangui M’Poko International Airport.

Why The Advice Is Severe

The pattern is one-sided: all 11 governments reviewed advise avoiding all travel or use an equivalent highest-level restriction. None are at a softer avoid-non-essential-travel or heightened-caution level.

Security risk drives the advice. Canada cites unstable security conditions and violent crime. Ireland cites uncertain security conditions and armed groups. New Zealand cites the unstable security situation, armed rebel groups, and a high level of violent crime. Japan keeps the country at Level 4 and says travelers should evacuate and not travel.

Germany’s 2026-05-14 update gives the sharpest operational detail. It cites armed fighting, increased improvised explosive attacks including on major roads, displacement, possible renewed fighting in Bangui, arbitrary arrests, airport disruption risk, curfews outside Bangui, and blockages on the Douala-Bangui route.

France’s advice splits the country into red and orange security zones and has an active “Dernieres minutes” update from 2026-04-07 titled “Contexte securitaire.” The risks named in the summary are political and military instability, criminality, and road travel.

Source Notes

The advisory update dates range from Spain’s 2024-05-22 notice to Germany’s 2026-05-14 update. All advisories reviewed here were checked on 2026-05-14 and still pointed to avoiding travel.

The UK wording is the main scope difference. Its advisory says to avoid all travel to the whole of Central African Republic, including Bimbo, Begoua, and Coline, except the capital, Bangui; it then advises against all but essential travel to Bangui, including Bangui M’Poko International Airport.

Spain’s advisory discourages travel under any circumstances and recommends that Spanish nationals in the country leave as soon as possible. Switzerland advises against travel to Central African Republic and against stays of any kind in the country.
