cuba Cuba v.2026-05-15

Fuel, electricity, food, water and medicine shortages can disrupt essential services, resorts, flights and airports across Cuba.

Cuba is under multiple official travel advisories as of 2026-05-15; the strongest current advice is to avoid non-essential travel because fuel, electricity, food, water, medicine, transport, and basic services are disrupted.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid non-essential travel to Cuba unless the trip is genuinely necessary. If you are booked, check your airline, hotel or resort, transfer company, and travel insurer before you go; an avoid-non-essential-travel advisory can affect coverage, refunds, rebooking, and support during disruption.

If you are already in Cuba, allow extra time for airport, flight, and ground-transport problems. Monitor local instructions, avoid large gatherings and protests, and keep a buffer for power cuts or unavailable supplies. One official advisory updated 2026-05-04 says shortages can affect resort services too.

  • Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office
  • Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia
  • Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Switzerland
  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, New Zealand
  • Department of Foreign Affairs, Ireland

Why Cuba Is Being Flagged

The advisories point to shortages and service disruption, not one isolated incident. The 2026-05-04 Canada advisory names shortages of fuel, electricity, food, water, and medicine, and says resort services can be affected. New Zealand’s 2026-02-13 advisory names serious fuel shortages affecting access to essential services.

The travel threshold is similar across several governments. The UK advisory, updated 2026-04-02, advises against all but essential travel. Switzerland’s 2026-02-17 update advises against tourist and non-urgent travel. Ireland’s 2026-02-11 advisory says to avoid non-essential travel.

Other official notices use caution language but name the same practical problems. France has a 2026-03-31 update titled “Crise énergétique à Cuba.” Italy’s 2026-03-02 update covers the energy situation, fuel shortages, flight disruption, and airport disruption. Japan’s 2025-12-15 Level 1 notice tells travelers to monitor reliable information and use sufficient safety measures.

Protests And Local Instructions

The UK also flags recent protests. Its 2026-04-02 warning says most have remained peaceful so far, but protests can escalate. Avoid large gatherings, follow local authority instructions, and monitor local media while moving around.
