Ongoing military activity, arbitrary detention risks, flight and airport disruption, and closed airspace can trap or delay travelers.

Iran is under avoid-all-travel advisories from 11 governments as of 2026-05-15. The latest update in this set was Germany on 2026-05-14; several advisories tell nationals already in Iran to leave if they can do so safely.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid all travel to Iran. If you are already there, check your own government's current advice now, reduce movement, monitor flight and border changes, and leave if your advisory tells you to and you can do it safely.

The strongest official advice applies to Iran as a country. Separate notices add risks around border areas, Gulf islands, airport disruption, airspace disruption, demonstrations, and arbitrary detention.

If you have a booking, check refund rules before the next cancellation deadline. If you are already in Iran, keep plans flexible: official notes mention suspended flights, border restrictions, airport disruption, and closed airspace.

Where exactly this applies

The avoid-all-travel advice applies to Iran as a country in the strongest advisories in this set.

Several notices also name specific risks or places:

  • Border restrictions, border risk, demonstrations, flight disruption, and airport disruption in Italy's 2026-04-28 update.
  • Closed airspace, reduced movement advice for people already in Iran, and especially risky border and Gulf areas in Spain's 2026-04-13 advice.
  • Khorasan meridionale, Khuzestan, the Greater and Lesser Tunb islands and Abu Musa, Kermanshah, Ilam, Kerman, Sistan and Baluchistan, Kurdistan, and West Azerbaijan in Italy's 2026-03-05 regional caution notes.
Organizations issuing warnings
  • Auswartiges Amt (Germany)
  • Department of Foreign Affairs (Ireland)
  • Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Australia)
  • Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (Switzerland)
  • Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (United Kingdom)
  • Global Affairs Canada (Canada)
  • Ministere de l'Europe et des Affaires etrangeres (France)
  • Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores, Union Europea y Cooperacion (Spain)
  • Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale (Italy)
  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Japan)
  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (New Zealand)

Why The Advice Is So Strong

The repeated reasons are security conditions, regional conflict, arbitrary arrest or detention, and disrupted exits. Germany's 2026-05-14 notice warns against all travel, calls on German nationals to leave, cites arbitrary arrest risk, and says German embassy staff were temporarily relocated from Iran, leaving consular help unavailable (Auswartiges Amt).

Canada's 2026-05-04 advice says to avoid all travel because of ongoing military activities and tells people in Iran to leave now if they can do so safely. It also notes that some airlines have suspended flights to and from Iran (Global Affairs Canada).

The UK says British and British-Iranian dual nationals face significant risk of arrest, questioning, or detention. The UK also tells British nationals in Iran to consider the risks of staying (FCDO). Ireland flags arbitrary arrest and detention of European citizens in its Do Not Travel advice (Ireland DFA).

Spain's 2026-04-13 advice completely discourages travel because of the regional conflict context, says the airspace is closed, urges people in Iran to reduce movements, and highlights border and Gulf areas as especially risky (Spain MAEC). Italy's 2026-04-28 update focuses on security and flight conditions, including border restrictions, border risk, demonstrations, flight disruption, and airport disruption (Viaggiare Sicuri).

Japan keeps Iran at Level 4, with evacuation advice and an avoid-travel instruction in its current note dated 2026-01-16 (Japan MOFA). New Zealand's current Iran advice says to avoid travel because of the volatile regional security situation, arbitrary arrest or detention risk, and possible violent civil unrest (SafeTravel NZ).
