mali Mali v.2026-05-15

Terrorist attacks on national roads make overland exits dangerous; 25 April attacks near Bamako airport still leave some flights delayed or cancelled.

  • updated 2026-05-15

Mali is under nationwide avoid-all-travel advisories as of 2026-05-15, after coordinated attacks on 2026-04-25 and continuing risks from terrorism, kidnapping, armed banditry, fuel shortages, flight disruption, and unsafe national roads.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid all travel to Mali. If you are already there, leave by commercial flight if you judge that safe. Avoid overland departure routes to neighboring countries; official advisories cite terrorist attacks on national highways.

Check your airline before going to Bamako International Airport. The airport is open, but flights may still be delayed or cancelled after the 2026-04-25 attacks near the airport and in Kidal, Gao, Kati, and Sevare.

If your plan depends on crossing Mali by road, postpone it or reroute outside the country. Current official advice supports avoiding Malian overland routes, including main land routes and national highways.

Where exactly this applies
  • The avoid-all-travel advice applies to Mali nationwide.
  • The 2026-04-25 coordinated attacks were reported in Kidal, Gao, Kati, Sevare, and near Bamako International Airport.
  • Official notes cite terrorist attacks along national highways, terrorism and kidnapping risk nationwide, and higher concern in northern, central, and border areas.
  • Spain's advisory also cites a fuel crisis affecting Bamako and attacks on main land routes.

Why The Advice Is Severe

Germany's 2026-05-14 update tells German nationals to leave by air and avoid overland departures because national roads are targets of terrorist attacks. It cites coordinated 2026-04-25 attacks by JNIM and FLA in multiple parts of Mali (Germany travel advice).

The UK gives the same route instruction: leave by commercial flight if safe, and avoid overland routes to neighboring countries because terrorist attacks have occurred along national highways (UK travel advice).

Japan's 2026-04-30 update keeps Mali at Level 4, its evacuation-and-do-not-travel category, with nationwide advice to evacuate and avoid travel (Japan MOFA). Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Spain, France, and Italy also have current advice against travel or active security updates for Mali.

Flights And Airport Status

Bamako International Airport is open, according to the UK advisory updated 2026-05-02, but some flights are operating with delays or cancellations after the 2026-04-25 attacks near the airport and elsewhere in the country (UK travel advice).

Italy's current update also refers to clashes and flight disruption, and advises Italian nationals in Mali to consider leaving where commercial options remain available (Viaggiare Sicuri).

Source Notes

France has active security updates and mapped security-zone advice for Mali. The French advisory labels some areas as "Zones formellement deconseillees" and cites terrorism, kidnapping risk, criminality, and on-the-ground precautions (France Diplomatie security advice).

Spain's 2025-10-30 advisory discourages travel to Mali under any circumstances, citing terrorism, criminal groups, kidnapping risk, fuel problems in Bamako, and attacks on main land routes (Spain travel recommendations).

Switzerland's current note, published 2025-11-25, advises against travel to Mali and any stay in the country (Swiss FDFA). New Zealand's 2024-11-29 advisory remains at Level 4 of 4 because of unpredictable security conditions, terrorism, kidnapping, and armed banditry (SafeTravel New Zealand).
