Rio has two airport arrivals and several land or water gateways, but the useful public-transport spine is compact: Terminal Gentileza, the VLT and MetrôRio. From Rio de Janeiro/Galeão International Airport (GIG), the normal public-transport default is the direct airport bus to Terminal Gentileza, then VLT or Metro. From Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) and Novo Rio Bus Terminal, start with the VLT. From Central do Brasil Railway Station or the adjoining Américo Fontenelle Bus Terminal, stay inside the signed interchange and use the Metro or VLT.
If the public route has stopped, an access is closed, or the live trip becomes a transfer marathon, use Uber, 99 or an official taxi. One normal travel backpack works on the public routes below. A car becomes the better tool for unusually bulky or multiple items, an accessibility need, a group splitting the fare, or a late-night arrival—not because a backpack is somehow a luggage emergency.
Schedules, fares and payment rules checked 30 July 2026. Rio's airport pages still expose a few older R$4.30 fares; the current municipal fare is R$5, and that newer citywide fare controls. Check the linked live status or official timetable on arrival, especially around major events.
Understand Rio's three ticket systems before boarding
Rio's map looks unified; its fare media are not. Do not load one card and assume every gate will love it.
- Jaé is the city system. Use it on municipal BRT, VLT, city buses, municipal vans and cabritinhos. Since 30 May 2026, cash is not accepted aboard municipal buses. Cash still buys or reloads Jaé at ticket offices, self-service machines and authorized shops. The simplest visitor product is the reloadable green card, initially R$10: R$5 for the card shell and R$5 travel credit. The green card does not provide the city integration discount; that is restricted to the CPF-linked black card and Jaé app. Rio was still completing direct PIX and contactless bank-card rollout across municipal buses in June 2026, so an unfamiliar foreign card should be a convenience, not your only plan. Read the current city payment rules and find a current Jaé sales/reload point.
- MetrôRio is R$7.90. At a Metro gate you can tap a contactless Visa, Mastercard or Elo card/device, or use accepted transit media. Metro normally runs 05:00-00:00 Monday-Saturday and 07:00-23:00 Sunday and holidays. The BRT-Metro integrated fare at Vicente de Carvalho or Jardim Oceânico is currently R$9.70, but do not assume a green Jaé card gives every other transfer discount. Check Metro fares and payment and the current network/station guide.
- Riocard belongs mainly to the state network. TrensRJ suburban trains, Barcas Rio ferries and intermunicipal transport remain the important visitor use cases. The Barcas site also supports a Riocard Mais app QR ticket. A regular overseas visitor should expect to pay the municipal and state legs separately rather than trying to unlock resident integrations. The city's current integration page explains the boundary.
Every VLT stop except Praia Formosa has a Jaé machine. Buy and load before boarding, then validate at one of the readers inside the tram; there is no onboard cash sale. VLT Lines 1, 3 and 4 advertise average intervals of up to eight minutes, with shorter combined intervals on shared track, and operate 05:00-23:00. Event diversions are common in Centro, so compare the platform display with the VLT live arrivals and operating status before committing to a connection.
Rio de Janeiro/Galeão International Airport (GIG) to Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro/Galeão–Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG) sits on Ilha do Governador. It has no rail station. Its useful public connections leave from the BRT/airport-bus stations at the passenger terminals; for the current main Terminal 2 arrival flow, the clearest anchor is Terminal 2 Arrivals, Door D, Estação Galeão Tom Jobim 2.
Best GIG route by neighborhood
- Centro, Lapa, port district, Novo Rio or an SDU transfer: take the direct Galeão–Terminal Gentileza executive bus, then VLT Line 1 toward Santos Dumont. Leave at Rodoviária for Novo Rio, Candelária/Carioca/Cinelândia for the relevant Centro pin, or stay aboard to Santos Dumont.
- Botafogo, Copacabana, Ipanema or Leblon: take that direct bus to Terminal Gentileza, VLT Line 1 to Carioca or Cinelândia, then Metro toward Jardim Oceânico. Useful stops are Botafogo; Cardeal Arcoverde, Siqueira Campos or Cantagalo for Copacabana; General Osório or Nossa Senhora da Paz for Ipanema; and Jardim de Alah or Antero de Quental for Leblon.
- Cheapest handoff to the nearest Metro station: take airport BRT 38 toward Alvorada or 42 toward Madureira and leave at Vicente de Carvalho, the nearest useful Metro interchange. This is not the city centre or a hostel cluster. Take Metro Line 2 toward Botafogo and follow the live platform instruction if a transfer is required for the South Zone.
- Barra da Tijuca: take BRT 38 toward Terminal Alvorada. For accommodation closer to the Metro corridor, transfer at Alvorada to BRT 22 toward Jardim Oceânico, then walk, use the Metro, or make a short app ride from the station. Do not ride toward Madureira and call it “the city” because that happened to be the first route number you saw.
Direct GIG–Terminal Gentileza airport bus
This is the simplest public arrival for most backpackers. After customs, enter the public Terminal 2 arrivals hall, follow BRT / Transporte Público signs to Door D and the Galeão Tom Jobim 2 station, then match Terminal Gentileza / TIG / Direto on the vehicle or staffed display. The airport lists the service at Terminal 2 Arrivals. Do not board Line 42 or 38 by accident; those are stopping BRT routes with different endpoints.
The direct bus runs daily 06:00-00:00, with a published interval of about 20 minutes, a scheduled journey of about 25 minutes in ordinary traffic, and a fare of R$15 per person. With the simple green visitor card, budget the legs separately: R$15 airport bus + R$5 VLT, and another R$7.90 if you continue by Metro. Do not assume a resident integration discount. The bus uses the express corridor, but road incidents and event traffic can still extend the trip. The city publishes the current hours, headway, fare and terminal layout.
Buy or load Jaé before entering the paid boarding flow. The city says machines are installed at airports and BRT stations, and cash can be used at machines, ticket offices and authorized reload points. At GIG, follow the station's Jaé / Bilhetagem signs; a current Jaé merchant list also places a reload point at Farmais, Terminal 2 arrivals, Eixo 54/58. The route launched with both Jaé and Riocard, but Rio's municipal fare rules have since changed. Treat Jaé as the safe current medium, do not expect cash onboard, and ask station staff before relying on Riocard or direct foreign-card validation.
At Terminal Gentileza, all modes arrive on the ground floor. Go upstairs for ticket offices, toilets, shops and the airport-service waiting room. For Centro or the South Zone, follow VLT Linha 1 – Santos Dumont. Its useful sequence includes Rodoviária, the port stops, Candelária, Carioca, Cinelândia and Santos Dumont. Buy/load Jaé at a terminal machine, check the destination on the platform display, board Line 1 and validate inside. The VLT runs 05:00-23:00; if your airport bus reaches Gentileza after the last tram, use one of the signed night buses only if its named destination helps, otherwise order a car from inside the terminal.
BRT 38 or 42 to Vicente de Carvalho Metro station
This is the lower-fare route and can be better for a Metro-adjacent hostel, but it has more stops and a less forgiving transfer. From Terminal 2 arrivals, use Door D / Galeão Tom Jobim 2. Match the direction before tapping:
- 38 – Alvorada x Galeão Tom Jobim, Parador for Vicente de Carvalho and onward toward Barra;
- 42 – Madureira x Galeão, Parador for Vicente de Carvalho and onward toward Madureira.
The airport publishes the BRT operating window as 04:00-00:00 daily and the current municipal fare as R$5. It does not publish a dependable current headway for either airport direction. Check the station display and ask staff for the next 38 or 42 via Vicente de Carvalho; do not turn “BRT runs frequently” into a made-up five-minute promise. Use the airport's current BRT route page.
At Vicente de Carvalho, remain inside the signed interchange and follow Metrô Linha 2. The combined BRT-Metro fare is currently R$9.70 when the eligible integration is used. If the gate or card does not recognize the integration, pay the Metro leg separately rather than following someone through a barrier. Vicente de Carvalho is merely the nearest useful rail handoff; Centro and the beach hostel belt are still another Metro ride away. The airport's Metro connection page gives the current hours, fare and Door D location.
Other public buses from GIG
The airport also lists municipal 915 Galeão–Bonsucesso, 922 Fundão–Tubiacanga via Galeão, 328 Bananal–Candelária via RIOgaleão, 925 Aeroporto Internacional–Bancários, intermunicipal 760D Charitas–Galeão, and special 1760D Galeão–Charitas, plus coaches to Búzios and Macaé. All are real options for the matching destination; none is a better generic answer for Copacabana or Ipanema.
The published airport table gives no timetable for 915, 922 or 328 and its R$4.30 municipal fare is stale. Use the airport's route inventory to identify the operator, then confirm the next departure, destination, current fare and payment at the station. Municipal routes use Jaé and no onboard cash; intermunicipal services can use different state payment rules. A generic operator homepage without the airport direction is not a schedule.
Uber, 99 and official taxis at GIG
For Uber, request only after you are ready to walk to the assigned point. The airport's current instructions separate the flows:
- international arrivals: go upstairs to the Departures floor, Door D;
- domestic arrivals: leave Domestic Arrivals, turn left and use the assigned orange, green or purple Uber Zone.
The app's pin controls if construction or airport operations move a zone. Match plate, driver and vehicle before boarding. Fares are dynamic; compare the live Uber and 99 quotes rather than preserving somebody else's airport price as a universal truth. 99 is a useful backup, but payment choices and foreign-card authorization are whatever the confirmed app booking actually shows.
For a street taxi, remain in the public Terminal 2 arrivals area. Common yellow taxis board at Floor 0, Door A beside domestic arrivals; executive taxis use Floor 0, Door B. The airport lists Aerocoop and some executive cooperatives as 24-hour operations and says a trip may use the taximeter or a city-regulated table. Ask whether the quote is metered or prepaid, the final destination/zone, and whether your exact card or cash is accepted before loading anything. Check the airport's current taxi desks and pickup map and the city's current prepaid taxi tables.
Walking from Galeão Airport
Do not walk from GIG into Rio. The airport-island, expressway and bridge geometry is not a useful city walk, even with a tiny backpack. There is deliberately no airport-walk report prompt here.
Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) to Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro/Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) is on the Centro waterfront. Unlike GIG, it is genuinely close enough to walk to parts of Centro, but the VLT stop at the airport entrance is the lower-error default for most addresses.
VLT from SDU to Centro, Novo Rio and the Metro
After baggage claim, enter the public ground-floor arrivals hall and follow VLT signs through the terminal frontage toward Bossa Nova Mall. The named Santos Dumont stop is at the airport entrance; do not cross the multilane airport roads looking for a city-bus pole.
Buy and load Jaé at the stop's machine before boarding. Cash can be used to obtain/reload the card at the city's machines; VLT fare is R$5, runs daily 05:00-23:00, and Lines 1 and 3 average up to eight minutes between trams depending on the day and time. Check the electronic display for destination and validate inside the tram. The official Santos Dumont stop page confirms the airport connection and the VLT guide explains purchase and validation.
- Centro / Cinelândia / Carioca: take Line 1 or 3 in the inland direction and leave at the stop matching the hostel pin. Both serve Cinelândia and Carioca before their routes diverge.
- Botafogo, Copacabana, Ipanema or Leblon: leave at Cinelândia or Carioca, follow the Metro signs, and take the Metro toward Jardim Oceânico. Without an eligible integration, budget R$5 VLT + R$7.90 Metro. This is a VLT-to-Metro trip, not a direct beach tram.
- Central do Brasil: take Line 3 toward Central and leave at the terminus, then remain in the signed station complex.
- Novo Rio Bus Terminal or Terminal Gentileza: take Line 1 toward Terminal Gentileza. Leave at Rodoviária for Novo Rio or stay to the terminal.
Walking from SDU to Centro
Walking is reasonable in daylight when the exact stay is in the eastern Centro/Cinelândia area and your saved route is roughly 1-2 km. Exit toward the VLT/Bossa Nova Mall side, use formal crossings around the airport roads, and navigate to the exact door—not merely “Centro,” which covers a large and variable area. Lapa is farther, the heat can be fierce, and quiet office streets become a different proposition at night. After dark, or if the route becomes empty or sends you under an awkward road junction, take the VLT or a short app car.
Uber, 99 and official taxis at SDU
Uber currently lets you choose the Uber Lounge or the central island at the Departures entrance. From arrivals, follow the indoor connector toward Departures, select the point you can actually reach, then request and follow the app map. Uber publishes the current SDU pickup flow.
Licensed taxi voucher counters are in/around the arrivals baggage-hall flow, with the authorized curb outside arrivals. The city's 2026 rules allow prepaid conventional and executive fares from SDU. Use a named counter or the official rank, get the metered/prepaid basis and payment method before boarding, and ignore an unaffiliated offer. The public Infraero directory does not currently give a reliable counter-by-counter schedule, so the terminal information desk—open broadly with airport operations—is the right resolver if the rank has moved.
Novo Rio Bus Terminal to Rio de Janeiro
Terminal Rodoviário do Rio de Janeiro (Novo Rio Bus Terminal) is at Avenida Francisco Bicalho 1, Santo Cristo. It is beside the Rodoviária VLT stop and linked by a signed footbridge toward Terminal Gentileza. Stay inside the terminal until you know which connection you are taking; there is no prize for finding the least pleasant perimeter exit.
VLT from Novo Rio to Centro and the South Zone
From the coach platforms, follow Desembarque / Saída / VLT to the lower public arrivals level and the signed front exit. The Rodoviária VLT stop is directly in front of the terminal. Buy/load Jaé at the stop machine, check Linha 1 – Santos Dumont on the display and validate onboard.
- leave at a named port stop, Candelária, Carioca or Cinelândia for a Centro address;
- for Botafogo and the beach belt, leave at Carioca or Cinelândia and transfer to Metro toward Jardim Oceânico;
- for SDU, remain on Line 1 to Santos Dumont;
- for the airport bus to GIG, use the signed Rodoviária footbridge into Terminal Gentileza, then go upstairs to the airport-service waiting/ticket area.
VLT costs R$5 and runs 05:00-23:00. The operator advertises up to eight-minute average intervals on Line 1, but Centro events can close or split sections; check the live VLT status before leaving the terminal.
Direct Novo Rio bus to Terminal Alvorada in Barra
The terminal currently advertises a direct internal service to Terminal Alvorada, departing from platform 57 / lower arrivals, for R$18.90 about every 30 minutes. That can beat VLT-Metro-BRT for a Barra address. Novo Rio does not publish a dependable full daily operating window or complete visitor payment instructions for this service. Ask the information desk for the next Alvorada departure, final stop and cash/card method before walking to platform 57. Treat a thirty-minute interval as the advertised pattern, not a guarantee at midnight. Use Novo Rio's current services guide.
Uber and official taxi at Novo Rio
The terminal's Uber Lounge is on the ground floor of the parking garage. From the upper departure level, take the connecting walkway into the garage and the elevator to G1, then select Uber Lounge in the app. This is much clearer than dropping a pin on Avenida Francisco Bicalho.
Official taxi-cooperative counters are on the lower arrivals level. Use the staffed desk, confirm meter versus the city-regulated prepaid table, destination and accepted payment, then go to the assigned vehicle. After the last VLT, those two controlled pickup paths are the useful defaults.
Central do Brasil Railway Station to Rio de Janeiro
Central do Brasil Railway Station is Rio's suburban rail hub, now operated by TrensRJ. It is not a national intercity railway terminal. The hall connects with Metrô Central do Brasil and the Central VLT stop, so most arrivals should transfer inside the signed complex instead of exiting onto Avenida Presidente Vargas to improvise.
TrensRJ currently publishes Central's opening hours as 04:00-22:45 weekdays, 04:45-21:15 Saturday, and 05:30-20:30 Sundays/holidays. The station has ATMs, Wi-Fi and toilets; ticket facilities can take cash, PIX or contactless payment subject to the active equipment. Check the Central station page and live alert and the TrensRJ journey planner before relying on a late connection.
Metro or VLT from Central
- Botafogo, Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon: follow Metrô signs inside the complex to Central do Brasil station. Use the platform display for the South Zone/Jardim Oceânico direction and transfer only if the live service pattern instructs it. Tap a contactless bank card/device or buy the accepted Metro fare at the station.
- Carioca, Cinelândia or SDU: follow VLT signs and take Line 3 toward Santos Dumont. Buy/load Jaé at the machine and validate onboard.
- Novo Rio, Terminal Gentileza or Praça XV: Line 4 can connect Central with those corridors; verify Terminal Gentileza or Praça XV on the platform display because the two directions are opposites.
In daylight, some Centro addresses are walkable. At night or when the hall is quiet, remain in the staffed interchange and make the Metro/VLT transfer, or request a car before going to the curb. The precise risk is the exposed station-to-street transition with a phone out—not the existence of a normal backpack.
Américo Fontenelle Bus Terminal to Rio de Janeiro
Terminal Rodoviário Américo Fontenelle (Américo Fontenelle Bus Terminal) is at Rua Bento Ribeiro, beside Central do Brasil. It serves state and regional bus routes and is not Novo Rio.
After getting off the bus, stay in the terminal and follow signs toward Central do Brasil / Metrô. If an internal corridor or gate is closed, ask the terminal information/security point for the staffed route to Metrô Central rather than navigating around the block with a phone in hand. The same onward choices then apply: Metro for Botafogo and the beach belt; VLT Line 3 for Carioca/Cinelândia/SDU; Line 4 for Praça XV or Terminal Gentileza.
The state operator publishes route platforms, fares and schedules on the current Américo Fontenelle terminal page. Those schedules describe the incoming regional buses, not the Metro or VLT connection. After the rail networks close, order Uber/99 from inside or use the official taxi point shown by terminal staff.
Praça XV Ferry Terminal to Rio de Janeiro
Praça XV Ferry Terminal is already in Centro. The common Niterói arrival is Praça Arariboia–Praça XV, currently up to 22 minutes and R$5. From Arariboia on weekdays, departures start at 05:40; service is every 15 minutes from 06:30-10:00, generally every 20 minutes through the middle of the day and 16:40-20:00, then named departures through 23:30. Saturday service is every 30 minutes 05:30-23:30; Sunday/holiday service every 60 minutes 05:30-23:30. Check the exact direction, timetable and live queue/status because special operations can override the static pattern.
The ferry uses the Riocard/state payment ecosystem, not ordinary Jaé. The operator promotes a Riocard Mais app QR ticket. At Praça XV, the station has an external Riocard reload shop and a Banco24Horas ATM; at the origin, ask the ticket office which of cash, card, Riocard or QR is working before joining the gate queue. The operator does not currently publish a clear visitor guarantee for cash and foreign cards at every booth.
Walk, VLT or Metro from Praça XV
- A nearby Centro address: walk in daylight if the saved door-to-door route is short and active. Praça XV is a destination, not an isolated out-of-town terminal.
- Novo Rio or Terminal Gentileza: take VLT Line 4 toward Terminal Gentileza, leaving at Rodoviária or the terminus. The VLT stop is outside Praça XV; use the official stop signs and verify the direction.
- Central do Brasil: Line 4 serves Central; Line 2 may also appear but can have gaps of up to an hour, so Line 4 is normally the useful first arrival.
- Botafogo or the beach belt: in daylight, walk the saved route to Carioca Metro and take the train toward Jardim Oceânico. If the streets are quiet or you do not want that walk, take VLT Line 4 to Central and transfer inside the Central complex, or use an app car.
Phone data at Rio's airports: physical SIM and eSIM
Save the hostel pin, Portuguese address, ticket instructions and ride-pickup screenshots before flying. Public Wi-Fi can bridge an app request, but an untested ride account should not be your sole after-midnight plan.
Physical SIM at GIG and SDU
At GIG, the airport lists Aerochip in the Terminal 2 public arrivals area, Floor 0, 06:00-22:00. Its own airport description says it activates data/voice products for people arriving in Brazil, but it does not publish the underlying Brazilian network, current package table or accepted cash/card combinations. Before staff open or activate anything, ask for the carrier, Brazilian phone-number inclusion, data amount, speed cap, validity, total BRL price, passport requirement, and whether cash or your exact card works. Test data and return the passport before leaving. Check the current GIG Aerochip location and hours.
At SDU, the current Infraero directory lists only S.O.S Celulares in the restricted Departures area, first floor, 07:00-22:00. That is not an accessible arriving-passenger SIM counter and it is not described as a carrier shop. Do not leave the terminal expecting a physical tourist SIM in arrivals. Use an eSIM or visit a carrier store after check-in.
Brazilian prepaid lines require identity registration. The normal online activation flow asks for CPF, date of birth, address/CEP, document images and a selfie; if it fails, Anatel says activation can be completed at a physical carrier store with identity documents. Claro explicitly says a foreign visitor can activate prepaid physical SIM or eSIM in a Claro store with a passport. Store-level cash and card acceptance are not guaranteed on the carrier page, so bring both and ask before activation. Read Anatel's registration process and Claro's visitor instructions.
Local eSIM before or after arrival
The lowest-friction local option for a compatible unlocked phone is currently Claro Flex Pass for international visitors. Claro says it is digital, requires no Brazilian ID, accepts a passport and temporary Brazilian address, and charges an international credit card in USD. Download the official Claro Flex app, choose “international visitor,” install the eSIM while you still have dependable Wi-Fi, and keep the activation details offline. It is cashless. Check the current English Flex Pass flow.
Claro also offers store-activated prepaid eSIM with a passport. TIM and Vivo sell eSIM products, but their ordinary digital flows may assume Brazilian account details; do not describe a generic eSIM page as proof that a foreign visitor can finish remote activation. An international travel eSIM is another pre-flight fallback, but many are data-only and do not provide a Brazilian number for calls or SMS.
Cash exchange and ATMs at Rio's arrival gateways
Rio's public arrival routes can be started without a thick wad of cash: Metro takes contactless bank cards, while Jaé can be bought/reloaded with cash at machines and authorized points. Still, a small BRL buffer is useful for a card failure. Keep these costs separate: an exchange counter's spread; an ATM operator surcharge displayed by the machine; your issuer's withdrawal fee and card-network FX spread; and dynamic currency conversion (DCC). If an ATM offers to bill your home currency, choose BRL / decline conversion unless you have deliberately compared the disclosed all-in offer. Visa explains the DCC choice.
GIG currency exchange and ATM
GIG lists Banco Safra exchange counters at:
- Terminal 2, Floor 0, public Arrivals: 24 hours;
- Terminal 2, Floor 2, public Departures before security: 24 hours; and
- Terminal 2, Floor 1 mezzanine, international Departures: 04:00-23:00.
An arriving traveler should use the Floor 0 public-arrivals counter rather than chase a restricted departure point. Check the current Banco Safra directory entry. The airport does not publish its live note-buying rate, so “airport exchange is bad” and “Safra is reasonable” would both be guesses. Ask how many BRL you receive for a fixed amount with every fee included, compare the effective total with the Banco Central reference converter or VET comparison, and exchange only the first-day amount if the spread is poor.
The airport lists 24-hour ATMs in Terminal 2, Level 1, public Arrivals. Follow Caixas Eletrônicos / ATM signs from the arrivals hall or ask the information desk; the official page does not name every active bank. No current source supports calling one GIG machine the cheapest. Insert the foreign card, read any surcharge and withdrawal limit before confirming, reject DCC, and remember that a zero on-screen operator fee does not erase your home issuer's fee.
SDU currency exchange and ATM
Infraero's current SDU shop/service directory does not list a staffed currency-exchange counter. Do not plan to change cash there without a same-day terminal confirmation. It lists ATMs in the Departures Terminal, first floor, 06:00-23:30. From Arrivals, follow the indoor connector to Embarque / 1º piso and ask the information desk for Caixas Eletrônicos if the bank wall is not visible. The directory does not identify a best bank, foreign-card surcharge or live withdrawal limit; use the on-screen disclosure and decline DCC. Check the current Infraero SDU shops and services page.
Novo Rio, Central and Praça XV money facilities
- Novo Rio: ATMs are distributed through the terminal; a Caixa branch is on the upper departures level. Express Change Tour is listed daily 07:00-21:00. Its live rate and every ATM's foreign-card fee are not published, so compare a fixed all-in exchange amount or read the ATM screen rather than trusting the terminal setting as evidence. - Central do Brasil: the station lists an ATM but not a bank-by-bank foreign-card comparison. Use it inside the station during opening hours; do not exit to hunt for a supposed “better ATM” based on an old blog.
- Praça XV: the ferry terminal lists a Banco24Horas ATM and an external Riocard reload shop. It does not publish a foreign-card fee guarantee.
Keep the exchange receipt. Banco Central says the Valor Efetivo Total (VET) combines the exchange rate, fees and taxes and is the useful comparison—not a daily USD conversion pasted into a travel article.
Phone, data, and money on arrival
Sort out data before the terminal Wi-Fi becomes a plot twist. If you plan to use a travel eSIM, install it before flying and switch it on only when its activation terms say to. Save the hostel address, booking, first route, and one offline map while you still have a known-good connection.
Brazil uses Brazilian reais (BRL). A travel eSIM prepared before arrival is the lowest-friction option if you only need data. If you want a Brazilian number, use an official carrier shop with your passport and let staff confirm the current visitor-registration path; do not assume a reseller can complete it.

Before leaving the terminal
- Make sure your ride or transit app can still log in before removing or disabling the SIM that receives its verification texts.
- If you buy local service, use an official carrier shop or clearly branded counter, bring your passport, and confirm the line works before walking away.
- Screenshot the hostel address in the local language and the route you intend to use. A dead phone should be annoying, not mission-ending.
Cash, cards, and ATMs
An ATM can involve four different costs: the machine operator's surcharge, your bank's fee, the card network's exchange-rate markup, and—on a credit card—a cash-advance fee. The amount shown on the machine is not necessarily the whole bill. Read the confirmation screen and cancel if the fee or currency is unclear.
At an ATM or card reader, decline dynamic currency conversion and choose the local currency. Keep a small cash fallback until you have personally confirmed that your first transit route, hostel, and nearby food options accept your card; “cards usually work” is not an arrival plan.
Where to sleep on the first night
- Botafogo: the best transport compromise for many backpackers. It has a Metro station, buses to several parts of the city and a growing hostel/nightlife cluster without putting every trip at the far end of Copacabana. From GIG use TIG–VLT–Metro; from SDU use VLT–Metro.
- Copacabana: the densest beach-area hostel choice, served by Cardeal Arcoverde, Siqueira Campos and Cantagalo Metro stations. Check which one is actually near the hostel; “Copacabana” can still mean a long hot walk. It is lively and convenient, but phone and beach-theft precautions matter.
- Ipanema: a smaller, usually pricier beach base around General Osório and Nossa Senhora da Paz. It is simpler for Ipanema/Leblon days, farther from Novo Rio/GIG, and not risk-free merely because the postcode is expensive.
- Lapa / Centro / Santa Teresa: useful for nightlife, architecture and some budget stays, but much more sensitive to the exact block and time. Arrive by a named VLT/Metro stop or door-to-door car, and do not make the first night an improvised walk from Central or Novo Rio. Santa Teresa's hills also turn a short map distance into a different trip.
- Barra da Tijuca: choose it because the trip or stay is actually in Barra. BRT 38 from GIG makes sense; it is a poor “central Rio” default for a first-time beach-and-Centro itinerary.

Safety geometry for the first transfer
Rio's most preventable arrival loss is a phone snatch or distraction theft during a curb or station transition. Before leaving Wi-Fi, use a strong device passcode, hide lock-screen message previews, enable stolen-device protection, and know how to suspend the phone/SIM and banking apps. A stolen unlocked phone can become an account takeover, not just a hardware loss.
- GIG: stay in the signed station, Uber zone or taxi queue. Do not follow a person offering an unofficial “Uber” or walk along the airport access roads.
- Novo Rio: use the VLT front exit, Terminal Gentileza footbridge, Uber Lounge or lower-arrivals taxi desk. Avoid circling the industrial road perimeter while staring at a map.
- Central do Brasil and Américo Fontenelle: make the Metro/VLT connection inside the staffed complex. If a gate is closed, ask staff for the active connection; do not solve it by wandering several exterior blocks after dark.
- Centro and Lapa: daytime business streets and the late-night version of the same street are different environments. Put the phone away after checking the next turn, use active crossings, and take a car for an empty final leg.
- Beach belt: Copacabana and Ipanema are workable bases, not phone-safe bubbles. Do not stand at the curb with an unlocked phone toward traffic, and do not leave a phone unattended on the sand.
For Corcovado, use the official train, van service or registered park conductor. The forest trail is not an arrival-day transport hack.
Moving around Rio after check-in
- Metro: the simplest spine between Centro, Botafogo, Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, São Conrado and Jardim Oceânico. It is R$7.90, takes contactless Visa/Mastercard/Elo, and usually runs 05:00-00:00 Monday-Saturday and 07:00-23:00 Sunday/holidays. Use the official station/network guide and follow live destination displays.
- VLT: useful for SDU, Centro, Praça XV, Central, the port, Novo Rio and Terminal Gentileza. It is not a beach tram. The fare is R$5 with Jaé, daily 05:00-23:00; Lines 1, 3 and 4 average up to eight minutes. Buy/load at a stop machine, validate inside, and use the live VLT page for event changes.
- BRT and municipal buses: useful for GIG, Barra and corridors the Metro misses. The base municipal fare is R$5 and cash is not accepted onboard. A green Jaé card is the resilient visitor option; direct contactless and PIX may work on equipped validators, but do not assume a foreign bank card will rescue every boarding. Use the exact route number and direction, not just a bus color.
- TrensRJ and Barcas Rio: these are state systems with separate schedules and Riocard/payment rules. Use TrensRJ for suburban destinations and Barcas for Niterói, Paquetá and the published bay routes—not as generic substitutes for the Metro. Both operators expose current status/journey data: TrensRJ and Barcas Rio.
- Uber and 99: practical for late nights, hill addresses and the last kilometer. Request inside, use the official pickup point at terminals, match plate/driver and keep payment inside the app when possible. Uber Moto and 99Moto may appear for solo trips in Rio, but they are not airport-plus-backpack transport; use a helmet and choose them only when the live app and what you are carrying make sense.
- Bike Itaú: useful for daylight waterfront/cycleway trips, not an airport transfer. The Rio system advertises service 05:00-00:00, tourist plans and both standard and electric bikes. End only after the dock/app confirms the return; an incomplete dock keeps the trip open. Check the current Rio plans and station map before paying, because foreign-card acceptance can vary.
Tap water
The old blanket advice that Rio tap water is undrinkable is not supported. The utility describes the distributed supply as treated and potable, with ongoing quality monitoring. The unknown is often the building's private tank, plumbing and recent outage history. Ask the hostel whether its kitchen tap is used for drinking and whether the tank is maintained; use the hostel filter or bottled water if staff say no, the water is discolored, or there is an active local notice. First-day defaults
- GIG before 23:00: direct R$15 bus to Terminal Gentileza, then Line 1 VLT; transfer at Carioca/Cinelândia to Metro for the South Zone. Use BRT 38/42 via Vicente de Carvalho when the cheaper Metro handoff or Barra route better matches the destination.
- SDU: VLT from the airport entrance; walk only to a genuinely nearby Centro pin in daylight. Use the Uber Lounge/central Departures island after service hours.
- Novo Rio: Line 1 VLT from Rodoviária; use the internal platform-57 Alvorada bus only after confirming the next departure and payment.
- Central or Américo Fontenelle: stay in the interchange and use Metro/VLT. Do not default to an exposed curb simply because the old guide called rideshare the answer to everything.
- Praça XV: walk a short active Centro route, take Line 4 toward Central/Gentileza, or connect to Carioca Metro for the South Zone.
- Install and test data before leaving the terminal, buy/load Jaé before a municipal boarding, keep Riocard/state modes separate, and hold a small BRL fallback.
