russia Russia v.2026-05-15

Border-region shelling, drone and air-defence incidents, terrorism risk, arbitrary detention, limited flights and consular support complicate travel in Russia.

  • Article
  • updated 2026-05-15

Russia is under broad official avoid-all-travel advice as of 2026-05-15. Current advisories cite Russia's war against Ukraine, drone attacks and air-defence activity, limited flights, reduced consular support, detention risk, terrorism risk, border shelling, and operational restrictions.

What Is Being Advised

Avoid all travel to Russia unless your own government gives you a narrower instruction that directly applies to your passport, route, or reason for travel. If you are already in Russia, check your government's current advice now, keep exit options under review, and assume return flights and consular help may be limited.

A Moscow-only or St Petersburg-only trip still falls inside the countrywide avoid-all-travel advice used by multiple governments. Before any necessary travel, check the latest official page for your passport country before booking, before departure, and before moving near border regions.

For unavoidable trips, monitor airport border checks, possible mobile-device inspections, mobile-internet or SMS restrictions, demonstrations, and local security instructions. These operational checks sit within the broader avoid-all-travel advice.

Where exactly this applies

The broadest advisories apply to Russia as a whole. Several official notes also name or flag specific regions and issues:

  • Russian administrative regions bordering Ukraine, including Belgorod, Kursk, Bryansk, Voronezh, Rostov, and Krasnodar.
  • Crimea.
  • Areas close to the Russian-Ukrainian border, where advisories cite armed incursions and shelling.
  • North Ossetia-Alania, Ingushetia, Rostov-on-Don region, Stavropol Territory, Karachay-Cherkessia, Chechnya, Kabardino-Balkaria, Dagestan, and Grajvoron / border regions with Ukraine in the Italian notes.
  • Moscow mobile-internet disruption, airport border controls on mobile devices, and possible temporary restrictions on mobile internet and SMS in Italian updates.
Organizations issuing warnings
  • Auswärtiges Amt, Germany
  • Department of Foreign Affairs, Ireland
  • Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia
  • Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Switzerland
  • Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, United Kingdom
  • Global Affairs Canada
  • Ministère de l'Europe et des Affaires étrangères, France
  • Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale, Italy
  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan
  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, New Zealand

Why The Advice Is So Strong

Russia's continuing war against Ukraine is the shared driver behind the strongest warnings. The UK advisory, updated 2026-05-05, cites drone attacks, Russian air-defence activity, lack of flights back to the UK, limited UK government support, and increased detention risk for British nationals. Canada, updated 2026-05-04, cites the armed conflict with Ukraine, terrorism risk, and armed incursions and shelling near the Russian-Ukrainian border.

Germany's 2026-05-14 update strongly advises against travel to Russia overall and warns against travel to Russian regions bordering Ukraine: Belgorod, Kursk, Bryansk, Voronezh, Rostov, and Krasnodar. It also warns against travel to Crimea and cites arbitrary detention risk for German and dual German-Russian nationals.

New Zealand's current Russia advice, last updated 2024-11-29, says not to travel because the armed conflict with Ukraine has affected commercial flight availability and access to financial services. Switzerland's 2025-10-21 update advises against tourist and non-urgent travel to or stays in Russia.

Japan's 2025-09-12 update keeps Russia-related areas under Level 4 and Level 3 warnings. The Level 4 text tells travelers to evacuate and avoid travel. The Level 3 text tells travelers to avoid travel. Both cite ongoing security risks and tell travelers to monitor reliable information and take safety measures.

Operational Issues To Check Before Any Necessary Trip

Italian notices checked on 2026-05-14 add useful operational detail: possible temporary restrictions on mobile internet and SMS, mobile-device checks at airport border points, and mobile-internet disruption in Moscow.

Italy also marks multiple areas for particular caution due to security or border risks, including North Ossetia-Alania, Ingushetia, Rostov-on-Don region, Stavropol Territory, Karachay-Cherkessia, Chechnya, Kabardino-Balkaria, Dagestan, and Grajvoron / border regions with Ukraine. Older Italian notices mention journalistic activity in Russia and air links / the situation in the country, with references to terrorism, border restrictions, border crossings, and demonstrations.

Source Notes

The strongest current official pattern is avoid all travel or equivalent. Nine issuing governments in the supplied advisory set use that level. One additional official source gives narrower heightened-caution notices for border, security, airport, mobile-device, and mobile-internet issues. Australia lists Russia as "Do not travel" with a 2026-04-24 update. Ireland rates the Russian Federation as "Do Not Travel" and strongly advises against all travel to regions bordering Ukraine, with a 2026-02-12 update. France has both security-zone advice and a current alert on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, updated 2026-04-15 and 2026-04-07 respectively.

The official pages were checked on 2026-05-14 and the article date is 2026-05-15. Advice can change faster than a travel plan; use the linked government pages as the final check for passport-specific rules, consular limits, and any new evacuation or border instructions.
